Same here.
Every time an officer dies... I start to be a little less judgmental of cops and whether or not they act too soon.
Tragedies like this remind me that people want peace and safety, but they do not see what leo's have to go through on a daily basis --and the risks they take !!!
Some (like my friend's husband) feel that the police need to step back in each situation and wait. He says leo's shouldn't shoot at anyone until they (police) see a gun in the perp's hand and the perp is firing. (We agree to disagree !)

If a police officer says (for instance) to 'put your hands in the air, where I can see them' , and the person being pulled over decides to disobey and goes to reach into his car/truck -- I don't have a problem with the leo using whatever means necessary to get the perp on the ground.

I'm curious if the perp in this murder took Officer Roses' gun after he was shot, or if there was a struggle for it ?
Or was he ambushed.

Despite the fact that the suspect's mother says DeAngelo didn't do this.. the police must feel they have the right man.
MOO

Rest gently, Officer Rose !

So we have this -

“I don’t believe he was specifically targeted” because of his uniform, Wayne State Police Chief Anthony Holt said at a news conference on Wednesday.

And this -

Wayne State police Sgt. Cary Glazer told The Associated Press he had a physical run-in with the suspect five years ago. Glazer said he was patrolling the campus in 2011 when the man walking in the street swore at him and told the sergeant to get out of the way.

Glazer said he got out of his car and the pair struggled until other officers arrived.

"He wanted to fight — he wanted to fight an officer," Glazer told The Associated Press.

Wilson said they still don't know what the motive was for the shooting, "whether it was an ambush or something different."

From your link

Isn't it time we the public start protesting this war on our LEOs?

SABBM

Ummm... YES.
Fully agree !

It makes me ill to see people out marching in protest with signs that promote death towards law enforcement.
Normally I don't condone violence.... yet --there's this urge to rush at them and yank the sign from their hands and throw it into a burning autumn leaf pile.
But no. That would be wrong , since others have the same freedom of speech that I have.

My .02 is that attacks on persons who are entrusted with our safety should be dealt with extra severity and swiftness.

Let them have their free speech...somebody will get tired of their endless BS and sock them right in the mouth! Sometimes that is the only thing that penetrates their thick skull!

Your post made me giggle a little. (Sometimes we need to smile a bit.) :)

If we lived in an alternate universe --those who march with placards bearing anti-leo sentiment... could maybe find out for themselves what a world would be like where a 9-1-1 call results in... nothing at all. Let's say those specific people shout "down with police' , or similar statements -- and it would result in calls to their local police station being ...... ignored.
My thoughts are that they'd swiftly change their tune. ;)

My condolences to his family and colleagues. It has to be especially tough to lose a loved one during the holidays.

I don't know what to think after reading what his mother said. She would know better than anyone about his physical difficulties, and ability to ride a bicycle. I know, she's like most every other parent on the planet, and probably doesn't think her son would be capable of killing somebody. But, nevertheless, I hope they have the right person.
There was a case in California that was made into a movie, where a lady was executed for murder, simply because she had no alibi. I just don't want to ever hear of that happening again. At the same time, he was found within close proximity, has had run-ins with the police, and if he didn't do the shooting, probably has no alibi. The bicycle that was located near the scene is still a question, tho. Did he take it, and try to ride it, or does it belong to somebody else? I know if it were mine, and found close to a crime scene,cI would be hesitant to call and admit it was mine, even if it had been stolen. In a case like that, if I didn't have a solid alibi, I would become a suspect. But I am certainly not going to say the man in custody didn't do this, just based on his mom's statement.

^ Piecing together various local media reports (I live in north-suburban Detroit), the suspect in custody has been staying in a homeless shelter near the WSU campus. Folks there identified the bicycle as belonging to the suspect. It's possible that DD hasn't had regular contact with his mother, so she might not be aware of his activities. In interviews, it appears that DD's mother is on oxygen, so she is probably not well. Based on media reports, DD doesn't reside with his mother.

I have a hard time believing the mother was in very close contact with her son in recent times. If she had a home and he was in a homeless shelter, then, it seems they are not very close. Why wouldn't he stay with her instead of in a shelter?

It really is getting out of control- this is the fifth this week. Two of those were really creepy. There was one who was just sitting in traffic and shot at.

Another creepy one was a cop in his car writing a tickets and someone that no involvement with what was going parked walked up and shot the guy.

There is somewhat of an anarchy feel to it
imo.

I think LE def has training due in regards to deescalating/racial biases etc - but at some point this is becoming like non-civilized.

The 5 this week" - I am not sure but I can't recall a week wherein 5 cops have been shot in this duration - for "being" a cop.

Yes they chose to put their life on the line but people just randomly strolling by and shooting at people is really pretty disgusting.

The world is going mad................................

I think its wonderful about organ and tissue donation. When I lost my first husband, I didn't do any donations. I think the main reason was because that's alot to ask of a 21 year old widow, basically in shock. I hope I am never faced with that decision again, but if I am, I believe it might be a little easier, since I'm older, and am now an LPN.

This just "feels" strange.

Have any of you heard LE making a concrete statement about how they know it is him.

The way I understand it is a cop pulled up and he was on the ground.

It is not like I do not beleive it is him- it is just strange.

If any of us were asked "what resulted in LE arresting and charging him with this?"

would any of us be able to answer?? What am I missing here?

^ Couple of things without rereading all media reports. Bicycle belonging to suspect was found at the scene (identified as his by other people at the homeless shelter where he was staying). The suspect has had numerous run-ins with campus and local police (Detroit) in the past. Was seen in the area of the shooting.
