Detroit police are investigating whether a man they say shot and wounded two officers was involved in the killing of a Wayne State University policeman last fall.

Police Chief James Craig said Thursday at a news conference that investigators are looking into “similar characteristics” between the Wednesday night gunfire that injured the two Detroit officers near Ash and Tillman and the fatal shooting Nov. 22 of WSU officer Collin Rose.

However, Craig denied reports that Raymond Durham, 60, confessed to Rose’s slaying after his arrest Wednesday night.

“There was no confession,” he said. “We don’t want to make connections to other cases that have not been made.” ...

I'm glad Sgt. Rose's murder has been solved, and that the other 2 officers shot by Durham survived. I hope Durham will be taken off the streets for good.

May 2018:

Alleged killer of WSU cop still found incompetent
The man accused of killing Wayne State University police officer Collin Rose was again found by a psychiatrist to be mentally incompetent to stand trial for murder.

King set a hearing date for Aug. 8 for another competency review hearing to determine if the Detroit man will be deemed mentally competent to stand trial in Rose’s death. King said Durham will continue to receive treatment and that there “appears to be some progression”of Durham’s mental state.

Accused cop killer Durham still not competent for trial

Because Raymond Durham is unable to stand trial in the shooting case, Wayne County prosecutors on Friday dismissed assault with intent to murder charges against him, and will petition a Wayne County probate judge to have him committed to a secure mental hospital.

The dismissal of the assault charges during Friday's hearing before 36th District Judge Kenneth King is largely procedural, since Durham still has murder charges pending. He will remain in state custody until a ruling is made on his competency to stand trial on the murder charges.

The most recent psychological exam, detailed in a July 23 report from a doctor at the state Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ypsilanti, found Durham "remains incompetent to stand trial, but there's a substantial likelihood he will regain competency," assistant prosecutor Robert Donaldson told the judge.

The 15-month deadline on the murder charges expires Dec. 27, Donaldson said. Durham will remain in the secure forensic center facility, and King expressed hope Friday the defendant would continue getting treatment in hopes he will be found competent to stand trial before the deadline.

King scheduled a Nov. 5 competency hearing.
