We have discussed here several times what it would take for Jason to have killed his wife - what would push him over that edge.

Today I spent some time reading Steven Grant's confession that details how it came to be that he killed his wife and what he did with her body after he had killed her.

I must say it was an incredibly chilling read. This whole thing started because she refused to bend to his will, because she said some cross words and threatened to take the children, because she slapped him. None of which struck me as a reason to kill one's wife over but it happened. I quess the point is, it really doesn't seem to take a lot to push some people over the edge. Should you care to read for yourself:

Very sad that something really this simple could end up the way this did. We have heard from various insiders, that Michelle and JY fought a lot and did not care who they did it in front of. Imagine what it was like behind closed doors. :(

This is O/T but thanks RC for posting that link! I hadn't realized they'd released that info. As you know, this happened in Michigan where I live and Tara grew up about 100 miles from where I did and come to find out we had some mutual friends. (girls she went to college with and I had worked with in the past).
I'm sure it will be interesting reading.....so off I go.
Again, thanks RC!

PS......I'll also venture to the "dark side" so I can see what dkjack is writing about ! :)

Jake is now threatening me with legal action :truce: on CTV. The "Young's family attorney" may just jump at the chance to upstage Roger Smith. I guarantee that will attract some news. Bring it on big guy.

A while back there was some criticism of the police dept involved in this case for not cleaning up blood at the crime scene. I just happened to stumble across this article http://www.newsobserver.com/141/story/521190.html

and I thought this quote in particular was interesting - "Many people mistakenly think police officers are responsible for cleaning scenes. They're not, although some officers will recommend a list of cleaning companies, which number at least 10 in Charlotte." However, it may be difficult for police to provide a list of companies if no one will talk to them.

not mention how difficult it is for police to solve your wife's murder if you won't talk to them...

and....obviously price was not a factor. That goodness he remembered to pay his HO insurance premium before the murder.

making sure that his insurance premiums were all paid up could have been on his check list if this crime was premeditated
far in advance of nov 2nd.

Raisincharlie,

Do you think that your friend who is going to make copies of the Search Warrants would stop in at the office for building permits and inspections
while they are down at the courthouse and try to get the 5108 Birchleaf Dr. floor plan?

I believe that the building that they would need to go to is right next to the Wake County Courthouse. It would be the
The Building permits and Inspections office which is at the Garland Building
just a couple of doors away from the courthouse.

Further information concerning building permits may be obtained by calling permitting personnel at 856-6222 or plan review staff at 856-6234

inspections and permits:

Garland H. Jones Office Building

300 South Salisbury Street
Raleigh, NC 27601

http://www.wakegov.com/locations/courthouse.htm
Wake County Courthouse

335 S. Salisbury Street
Raleigh, NC 27602

I think that the floor plan would be at the permits and inspections office rather than where deeds are kept on file, but i'm not sure.

Maybe Scandi could tell us.

Since you raised the insurance question though, here's one for you. Who was the beneficiary for her life insurance policy(ies) and have the funds been disbursed? If so, who received them?

Jake,

I am still waiting for an answer to my questions above.

Thought it would be good to have the following for reference as we have learned NC has some very different practices regarding discovery from those we are use to.

Tacori posted this link at CTV but it is a very useful link:

http://www.newsobserver.com/141/story/563038.html

"Defense lawyers in the lacrosse case used the new law as a crowbar to pry open Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong's files from the moment charges were filed; witness statements, phone records, police reports and DNA evidence emerged."

Worth remembering that NC is not a full discovery state and as noted above - DA must make information available to the defense when charges are filed - not the conventional 30 days before trial that we are use to. Will post this in the links file for reference. Tacori if you are looking - thank you.

Thanks Charlie and Tacori. That is horrible. It is almost like flashing the enemy before going to war! Since the State has to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, you would think it only fair they have some advantage.

Thanks to you and Tacori. Interesting.
Well, ummm, prosecutors best have their ducks in that proverbial row before filing charges, eh? Gee, that can take some time.... ;)

I thought I would make a list of the reasons SG gave for murdering his wife from his own words in his confession. While this is not directly related to this case, I think it demonstrates how easy it is for things to spiral out of control. By all accounts, the Grants were also a happily married couple, both good parents to their children and so on. The list:

1. They argued over her work schedule-Tara informed him she had to do her job (note she did make more money than her husband)

2. During this argument she turned to walk away from him and he grabbed her, she slapped him.

3. He struck her back knocking her to the floor. She hit her head and got angry and told him that was it, she was taking the kids and this was the end of it and she was going to call the police because he had hit her.

“Because she fell she started cussing at me telling me she would take the kids and house and I was going to jail and I would become the loser I always was. I then grabbed her neck to make her stop talking; instead I found myself squeezing and choking her with my right hand.”

4. He began choking her. She scratched his hand.

5. At this point SG decides that he cannot stop because he will go to jail so he proceeds to choke her to death after he places something over her face.

One other note - he was having an affair with the au pair. The only logical thing about this is SG decides to kill her because he is afraid he will end up in jail once he had gone a bit too far. Otherwise this is a terribly senseless murder IMO. For some reason I suspect that Michelle Youngs murder will turn out to be as senseless as this one.
