Winter warning underway, schools closing early

A large swath of Michigan, including all of Metro Detroit, is under a winter storm warning, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning stretches from Muskegon through Detroit and through most lower-central communities through the state.

Snow had already started to fall before 9 a.m. in many communities. Five to 8 inches of snow is expected throughout the day, according to the latest advisory. The heaviest is expected Wednesday afternoon when snow could fall at a rate greater than an inch per hour.

"If you must travel," a note on the weather warning says, "keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency." ...

We got 4" :snowflake: where I live in Oakland County, MI. Power went out for 14 minutes at 7:30 this morning. When we have a power outage, smoke detectors beep, so we were awakened unexpectedly. We thought there might have been a system overload due to kids powering up their new devices :D The fresh snow is really pretty :) Enjoy your day :christmastree:

40 years later: Remembering the Great Blizzard of 1978 in Southeast Michigan

DETROIT - It's been 40 years since a powerful blizzard dropped more than a foot of snow in Southeast Michigan, establishing itself as one of the more memorable weather events in recent history.

The Great Blizzard of 1978 not only brought heavy snow totals - but also hurricane force winds. The storm brought traffic - both in the air and on land - to a complete standstill.

As with the huge snowstorm of December 1974, another even more powerful (in terms of intensity/extent) storm is of strong interest to all meteorologists who have studied winter storms in the Great Lakes. This storm is also of interest and remembrance to many longtime residents of the Great Lakes, the Upper Ohio Valley and Ontario, Canada who had to deal with winter's full fury late in January of 1978...

1 year ago: Massive wind storm causes historic Michigan power outages

On March 8, 2017, a massive wind storm rolled through Michigan, knocking down trees and power lines, resulting in the largest power outage in the state's history.

The March 2017 wind storm knocked out power to more than one million in the state -- 800,000 DTE Energy customers alone. Winds peaked at nearly 70 mph in Southeast Michigan...

I remember the fateful day all too well. We lost three majestic 25-year-old blue spruce trees at the rear of our property. Unexpected but necessary expense for removal and replacement. !@#$ happens.

How unpredictable is Michigan's weather, really?

DETROIT - Don't like the weather in Michigan? Wait five minutes.

It's a popular saying in Michigan during all four seasons, especially the weeks that offer rain, snow and a random 70 degree day.

How does Michigan's crazy weather compare to the rest of the country? Buckle your seat belts - you may be in for a surprise.

FiveThirtyEight published an in-depth look at how predicable weather is around the country by comparing daily weather patterns against long-term averages...

Woke up to yet another overnight dusting of snow and slippery roads. DH's usual 45-minute commute took twice as long with many spinouts and accidents around metro Detroit. I have an appointment this afternoon and hope roads are clear and dry.
