MN - Beau Shroyer, Wife of Detroit Lakes missionary killed in Angola arrested in connection to his death

Is there evidence? Bank, cell phone, witnesses outside of the family? Did Jackie contact Bernadino while they were in the States for four months this summer? What about the money they raised while in the US. Is any missing, didn't travel back to Lubango? Did anyone notice anything peculiar when they were home?
There's one big piece of evidence, assuming that the Portuguese language news reports are accurate. According to this article, Bernadino gave the accomplices $9,000. In a country with an average salary of $250/month that's a lot of money. (Assuming it really was in dollars and not a mistranslation of some other currency.)

If they can show the cash originated from Jackie it would be a pretty strong evidence of a link between the two.

Traveling so I can’t look it up. Didn’t some articles say they found money but the amount was much less?

That bit stuck in my throat, that's a terrific chunk of US dollars to have ready to hand over to your boyfriend, on his say so that he has two blokes ready to off one's inconvenient husband. Bernadino could not have got that anywhere else but from Jackie, and she could not have got it anywhere else but from a joint account, or a fixed account earning interest , the whole changeover from account balance to cold hard cash in the hand being a matter of record.

That kind of currency just is not handed around or just withdrawn from your local branch, she would have had to give notice, and get Beau's signature, possibly, and inform the Angolan Tax Dept. And this goes ditto for any other currency, even Angolan.

All these three men are war babies... (the war ended in 2002, sort of ) probably fatherless . possibly motherless, probably long periods of interrupted schooling. That is one hell of a temptation, to young blokes of no inheritance, no home, no cattle, no tools.

Their crime will be projected as less heinous than Jackie's , most likely, Her crime of suborning murder, for money, while preaching the Word of God will be seen , in Portuguese Law as the more serious of the series of crimes committed that day.

No chance the money was less trackable? Meaning, cash donations received or from other sources while home in the US and transported back to Angola in September?

Or hear me out an iPhone, can do all those things. Mine has a fancy clock app that tells me what time it is everywhere (I use it frequently as I have clients in Arizona and they don’t switch clocks so I have no idea what time it is there, ever)… it also translates pretty well for free, fantastic with a paid app or translator for $19 an hour someone will translate for you, the legal system I don’t know Google it.
The have an entire missionary group is not one person in Angola volunteering to help. This makes no sense so I don’t believe it.
Not one word so far as I can find of any other missionary, or mission spokesperson referring to Beau's death, in any terms whatsoever.. no word of who is now taking over feeding the 300 children every lunch time.. everything just fades back into oblivion...

''The have an entire missionary group is not one person in Angola volunteering to help. This makes no sense so I don’t believe it.'

Truer words do not exist!!! Not only do I not believe it, I reject the premise!.... The Belgians, the French, the Dutch, the Flemmish, the Swedes, even the Brits would be engaging in some sort of helping roster, if only to keep up appearances!

There is not a country on earth that does not make restrictions on how much actual currency you can bring into their country.. for example, you cannot bring more than %10.000.00 AU dollars into Au from overseas, NOR that amount in any other currency, I can't bring a bag full of US dollars into the US while travelling, I have to do it electronically, or by certificate, or by cheque... not cash.. I think my limit is $5000.00 in cash... which, I have to find in AU before I leave, AND I have to declare that to the US consulate .

If I bring in more than ten thou I have to have dealings with the USA tax dept. .   The Revenuers!~

She could have collected the cash back in good old Minnesota, but she has to transfer it, over a certain amount, and I am sure it is less than $10.000 much less for sure, into an electronic or paper record....

I suppose you mean money smuggling?? .. you can put it delicately, but that's what it is!! . :p in other words?? because that's what Angola Customs would call it, if they found it. what a risk!! but .. you know, she appears to have been a tremendous risk taker, so it is not something one could discount...

Thank you. I’ll say it especially for appearances. This story isn’t quite over yet I have a feeling. There’s another shoe about to drop MOO

Quoting myself because I don’t like when people do this…. I think there will be additional charges for financial crimes against Jackie coming.

The language thing.. ask the Portuguese Consulate in Indiana, one state away. . they'll translate.

The Portuguese Legal System. Ditto. Ask the Consulate in Indianapolis, Indiana, or take a short trip over there, make an appointment.
Angolan or Portuguese consulate?

Though they may speak dialects of the same language, they are very different countries. Consulates usually do not do translations for non citizens- and even for citizens, they likely do as a one of "favor" type basis.

The cost for professional grade legal translations is very high. And... they really need professional grade. Just like US courts throw in Latin, foreign courts in developing countries can toss in archaic French, Spanish, Portuguese etc. vocabulary, and classical literature based verb tenses that are not part of the day to day language- but can give sentences very different meanings.

As a side note, my former company did business in Latin America. Myself, and several other employees could do translations of letters of inquiry, memorandums etc. from / into Spanish, speak with Spanish using customers etc. But.... contractual and legal translations went to the pros- no matter how fluent us "in house" guys and girls were- and sometimes were not.

As for legal systems.....

Portugal and Spanish being two distinct countries, can have two distinct legal systems. An example of this is Spain and Mexico. Spain, nor surprisingly, uses Spanish code. Mexico, however, uses the very different French Napoleonic code.

Portuguese and Spanish are in deed two different tongues and two different countries, but we are speaking here of Portugal and it's former colony, Angola, Angola has kept it's Portuguese Legal system, mainly intact. Whatever this has to do with Mexico has escaped me, Portuguese law, and the Porto Language is the lingua franca of the Court, and the legal system in general in Angola. ...

Personally, I have never heard Mexican spoken in any regular sense on the entire African continent. The bits I've lived in, that is. Not all of which were former Brit colonies, some were French, one was German, and a few were who knows what!! a bit of everything.

The consulate would in fact be of assistance to Beau's family, in that they would be have consular communication that would be of direct help to them, possibly, and ( my own opinion ) probably more than phoning Angola police from Minnesota, especially if one is unable to discern the time when the Superintendent is likely to be in attendance , that is, working hours he appropriates to undertake his duties. No point ringing the Superintendent at 3am in his morning,.

If the Indiana number is busy, they could always ring the one in Houston. !!

Actually with the rise of translation apps, the cost of professional translation is not near what is use to be. Also SIM, is more than capable of providing these services there is a reason they are not, MOO!
Angola was a Portuguese territory until the 70’s, you could easily go to a Portuguese embassy assuming there are more explain the situation and they would put you in contact with the right people.
I’m not arguing with you or disagreeing, I’m disagreeing with the spokesperson from the family who isn’t giving full information here. MOO

There is something a bit dodgy there, .. certainly appears to be some friction , some sort of competition between SIM and the Shroyer spokesperson.. . Not coming across as exactly on the ball, really..

I think there are forthcoming financial fraud charges coming, and SIM is complying and that’s why they aren’t helping the Shroyer family. MOO!

yes.. either the money came out of Beau and Jackie's account which held the selling money from their property, OR, it was the Missionary account.. both of which, I assume , would have needed Beau's signature as well as hers, but .. you never know, she was doing the talking at the churches, she may have organized it that it went into her sole account... somewhere, there is a dodgy money shift going on....

Because the bank would have rung Beau immediately, if funds were being withdrawn from the joint account. . that amount they would have rung him anyways... in US dollars, the bank would have to indemnify itself first..

Also, she would have had to withdraw this amount in dribs and drabs.. not the whole lot at once, that would ring bells all over the place, especially if she wanted it in US currency,, . so... premeditation, on a grand scale...

Traveling so I can’t look it up. Didn’t some articles say they found money but the amount was much less?
If I recall the details, the accomplices were originally promised $50K, but after the murder Bernadino told them he didn't have it, and only gave them $9K.

A different report mentioned that there was $5K at the crime scene, but I don't know how that ties into the other cash.

The person who could dispute whatever defense the defendants come up with is dead. The kids may have information valuable to the investigation. This will likely end up being a "she said, he said" scenerio, where they all point the finger at another.

What about the money they raised while in the US. Is any missing, didn't travel back to Lubango? Did anyone notice anything peculiar when they were home?

Curious if the investigation will also include working with LE back in the US? If there really is no evidence that this was anything but Bernadino's idea/storyline. Would Jackie have been arrested? I waiver on whether or not local authorities could be corrupt or inept. Whatever the case, Beau and his family deserve the truth and earthly justice.
There’s too much at stake for Angola to mess this up. IMO corruption is not a factor in this case. Angola wouldn’t arrest (and detain for over a month) an expat and accuse her of murder. This is a hot potato!

I doubt this is a “he said, she said” scenario. I don’t think there’d be arrest and detention if there’s a chance that was the case.

It’s possible Angolan LE is even getting criminal investigation procedures from US LE to guide them in this situation. They did seem to be right on the ball when it came to the first arrests. And, don’t forget, there’s an FBI agent stationed in Luanda (and perhaps more than one) or in a nearby country.

No one stateside who knows Jackie seems to question she’s the perp. IMO this is very telling.

If US LE can get phone records, there’s no reason Angola can’t. Heck, they can simply ask US LE to do them a favor and get all electronics data, text messages, etc

No actually joint is one or the other but usually not both unless very specific circumstances: I expect the financial charges to be conspiracy, corruption, extortion, solicitation of bribes; and the big ones land administration, tax administration and customs administration.

I don’t think it was banks, I think Jackie tapped into black market money scams and used missionary as a front.

I speculate there was a dodgy reason Jackie decided to do a “mission”. In other words, she felt compelled to get out of dodge.
Otherwise, I just can’t explain any of this. It’s quite dramatic to sell your family’s home, head off to Brazil, and then to Angola. When you don’t have experience abroad or facility with a second language (note, they were still learning Portuguese 4 years later, and very uncomfortable with travel abroad), this choice, it seems, has some entirely other purpose than following a religious “come hither”.

I think you, @Trooper and I are all picking up what the other is laying down and we all agree!!
