MN - Beau Shroyer, Wife of Detroit Lakes missionary killed in Angola arrested in connection to his death

  • #801
I wish the sponsoring missionary organization had been more mature / intelligent.

The couple seems to of been tossed into the field with no mentors, little training and little screening in regards for aptitude for the work.

I would have thought that the transition from Minnesota resident to Missionary in Angola would have been more gradual:

- Make some "come and see" type site visits for 30 days or so to see if this is really for you.
- More training in the US regarding realistic expectations, how to handle domestic help, local languages and culture.
- First assignment is assisting a mentor couple running a well established mission. Mentoring couple also reviews trainees for aptitude etc.

But..... as you implied, tossing people into the field is not a crime, murder is.
All you state may be true. But Jackie evidently had some preexisting core issues.

I would not doubt it.

A certain number of couples and individuals feel that jumping feet first into demanding church (and probably synagogue, temple and mosque) activities will solve marital problems, bad lifestyle choices and maturity issues.

The truth can be the opposite:

Jumping into demanding religious activities before one has resolved their own marital problems, fully left problematic life style choices, or has sought to develop needed levels of maturity will often exacerbate existing problems.

I’m frustrated with the lack of information flowing in this case. Sure wish a local media source would try to find an update. Couldn’t a reporter reach out to the Embassy?

Still nothing. I am slightly embarrassed to admit that I joined the emailing list of various missions in Angola, just in case someone gossiped , but to no avail... That was not a small job , either, because Christian missions go back to 1491 in Angola. it's been a favourite hunting, (or perhaps fishing) for men may be more appropriate for nearly 6 centuries.. Catholic missions first, no surprise ,and then the Protestants in the 19th and 20th centuries. There are a great many of them, and Beau and Jackie's outfit was one of a very great influx of missions this century.

Theirs was , from the statements made by the other missions themselves, rather unusual in that B and J's aim, stated , was to have 'deep , intimate relationships with the people' no other mission has that aim , apparently.. About 80% of the pop registers as Christian, quite a preponderance. The gathering of souls is somewhat of a competitive sport, in one sense, as the pool of the 'unsaved' is not particularly large. .

Because of the time thing, I am well asleep when news might break in Minnesota, or Angola.. so I will put up some sites that I check for those in other locations that might be interesting. You might get the scoop before me!! this would not be a problem to me, I hasten to add!!

From Angola...... .......https://www.verangola.net/va/en/

From SIM.....................https://www.sim.org/locations/angola/

Also ... some South African newspapers may enter the fray at some stage, mainly because of the nationality of the perp and the victim.

( AS for the timeline...... it is possible that the severity of the crime has moved the trial further along, in that for this crime of such serious criminality and aggravation, more time is allowed to be given to the panel of judges. Jackie's crime would be considered one of highly organised criminality. this may be where it fits on the Court's time line..... I offer this as a possibility.

(a) 4 months without an accusation brought forth;

(b) 8 months, the defendant asked for a judicial review of the accusation and one has not been produced;

(c) One year and two months without a sentence in the first instance;

(d) One year and six months without a definitive conviction;

(2) The deadlines above are augmented respectively to six months, ten months, one year and six months and two years in cases of terrorism, violent or highly organized criminality or when the procedure relates to crimes punishable by 8 years incarceration or more or crimes of: etc.

They probably couldn't have another baby; just relocating within town would have been less complicated!

@Trooper I don't think I've taken the opportunity to thank you for your insights into these communities. It's been so, so helpful, for me as I've never had any exposure to Africa. So thank you!!

Just want to say: you’re a sleuther after my own heart. I might even say you’re a ‘sleuther trooper’. 😀 [1]

[1] with apologies to ABBA

I agree, relocating would have been less complicated.

But, I think they were seeking two things: 1. A cure to marital problems 2. A renewed sense of purpose. So.... over seas missionary could accomplish both goals- or so it could have been thought.

Thinking of Beau and his family today.

Hey guys, Robert Kincaid is a fairly new thread here. He was working in Africa, missed flight from France to home. I saw mention he might be back in Africa, but this group of sleuthers knowledge of working/living in Africa would be amazing!

He's been found, in hospital, in Paris. ''' Robert's brother Louis said: "Rab has been found by emergency services and is requiring ongoing emergency treatment. While he is not out of the woods yet, we are just glad he is alive.''''

At the risk of sounding a bit Pollyanna -ish, trawling thru the mountains of mail I now get from various missions and organisations some times a speck of gold shines thru, not often and not in any way an avalanche of info but little dribbles..

This bit, from March 2o25 , which is about the latest time of any news at all, a new lot I just 'joined' has such a speck..

''''''Delays and customs closures postponed Beau’s burial in the U.S. until December 21. “We feel so blessed to have him ‘home,’ where we’ll be able to visit him when we need that comfort. Thank you again for your support,” the update said.

According to the statement, Jackie will remain in custody and will now face trial before a judge. A court date is expected to take place within the next six months.'''

( That is the second time I' ve got that bit in mail, , the first one I dismissed as optimistically opaque, but this one seems genuine, so, six months from March means September, unless Americans are changing not just maps but calendars, and September in Angola and where I live in Sydney is not far away, 3 weeks, check with news sites as the time inches up.. !!)

ps . no news yet as to whether the trial is to be held in Lupango, ( up north in Huilli province, ) or Luanda... no news yet of if it will be a double trial , Jackie and the boyfriend, nothing whatsoever on the other two, and less than zero about the runaway bloke. )

"Jackie Shroyer's statements at the scene sparked police suspicion" (from ministrywatch.com, above). Mm, interesting. I wonder what she said - maybe something like she was so sorry, she didn't mean it, she didn't think they'd really do it, it was only a joke. Interesting. No wonder they got onto her so quickly.

They were on to her from the start, it seems. What a cackhanded , idiotic murder this was, it is a mystery how any of them thought they could get away with it. Maybe she , in her horror at what she had set in motion, wanted to be comforted by the police!! some people are nuts... !

Given the Shroyers’ apparent lack of knowledge about Nigeria, perhaps she foolishly assumed the police were bumbling idiots, and/or she was smarter than them.

Maybe she thought it would be a "nice clean stabbing", and was horrified to realise that an uncivilised machete had been used.

Nigeria? Didn't you mean Angola?
