This thread is to discuss the case of George Floyd. It is not a thread to discuss racism in general.

Unless your post relates to this case specifically, it is off topic and will be removed.

  • #3
ADMIN NOTE:

Please stay on topic by discussing the trial without introducing the peripheral matters of riots and protests, BLM, all the extraneous chatter about racial inequities and other social justice issues.

We acknowledge, we understand how critical this trial is in relation to those issues, but we need to stay focused on this case and the trial itself. Yes there is overlap with those important issues, but the thread is specifically dedicated to discussing the George Floyd case and the Derek Chauvin trial and not all those other matters.

If members wish to generally speculate on how such issues may have influenced either the victim or the accused, that's fine, but please don't bring in specifics related to all those other matters and derail the thread with social justice issues that will not be resolved in this discussion.

Thanks !!

ADMIN NOTE:

To say simply that GF possibly had fear as a black man was left as reasonable speculation that doesn't warrant dissecting it any further. IF GF had that fear, surely we can all understand where it may have originated.

Quite a few posts had to be removed due to general back and forth bickering. There is no way to edit that many posts and be able to retain context so a lot of responses got removed in the process.

ADMIN NOTE:

Members have been previously advised not to trash the witnesses. They are not there for our enjoyment or entertainment and there is no need to publicly disparage them or belittle them.

Keep it classy folks !!

Thank you.

The murder trial of former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin is set to resume at 8:30 a.m. CT Tuesday when one or more legal issues will be discussed.

Witness testimony and the presentation of evidence will resume shortly after.

During that time, Morries Lester Hall, a key witness who was with George Floyd on the day he died, will appear remotely from the Hennepin County jail. He recently informed the court that he will invoke the Fifth Amendment if asked to testify in the ongoing trial of Chauvin, who has been accused of murder and manslaughter in the May 2020 death of Floyd.

Even if GF was overdosing, DC acted indifferent to his condition and did not put him in the recovery position nor administer narcan and also never mentioned the possibility of overdose to EMTs.

If GF was in OD, he did not take that into account at the time, which is evidenced by the unusually long time he spent knelt on him- neck or shoulder it doesn’t matter. He should not have still been in that position when GF was no longer responsive, he never considered that GF was an OD, a person in crisis, rather than a threat. He should not have had him in the prone position if he was ODing. OD wasn’t mentioned by DC at any point.

His failure to communicate GF’s actual condition, his failure to behave in the appropriate manner, his disregard for his training by using that particular restraint, all contributed to GF’s death whether drugs were a direct cause or not. GF could not breathe in that position, DC knew he couldn’t from training. He should have moved, especially once GF was no longer even moving let alone resisting.

He had a duty of care yet didn’t act in GF’s best interests at any point. All MOO

MN - George Floyd, 46, died in police custody, Minneapolis, 25 May 2020 #8 - Chauvin Trial Day 5

4/5/21: Monday, Trial Day 6: Each morning of the trial the judge has set aside 9am CT/10am ET for any motions/issues with attorneys. Motion hearing: Attorneys are arguing defense motion to include ALL of Chauvin's body cam video. Defense asked for more body camera video to be allowed later to be shown for the jury. Judge will allow some of it to be entered saying it's relevant because it shows Chauvin's "demeanor & actions" immediate following encounter. Eric Nelson objected to Sgt. Pleoger & Lt. Zimmerman's testimony. Judge Cahill denied the defense motion to suppress opinions made by officers about use of force. Judge Cahill says "I am allowing the Chiefs testimony that the use of force was contrary to policy." Jury issue? Judge order audio cut for a 'closed' hearing with the jury. Judge brought the jury in & told them he needed to ask them some questions (audio was cut). They found no misconduct & will continue.
State witnesses: Blackwell on direct. 20) Dr. Bradford Wankhede Langenfeld. He pronounced Floyd dead on May 25, 2020. Finished his residency last summer at Hennepin County Medical Center. Nelson on cross. Schleicher on direct. 21) MPD Chief of police Medaria Arradondo. Nelson on cross. And re-direct. Re-cross & re-direct. 22) Katy Blackwell, was commander of training div., now inspector of 5th precinct. Went thru Chauvin's training record. Nelson on cross. Judge Cahill dismisses the jurors. He says they have an 8:30am hearing tomorrow. It's about Morries Hall's invocation of his 5th amendment rights. Trial continues on 4/6/21.

*Charged (7/22/20) with 6 counts of aiding & abetting taxes-false or fraudulent returns-filed with commissioner & 3 counts aiding & abetting taxes-failure to file return, report, document. – Omnibus hearing on 6/30/21.

Good morning all - Mr. Hall’s attorney arguing now

ETA: Yeah judge is skating the lines on this one. State has the right to cross examine and they can’t do that properly if defense is allowed to get in this tiny sliver they want. I agree with Hall’s atty, that tiny sliver is potentially incriminating. This is quite interesting because normally state would give immunity if a witness helps their case. But obviously Hall doesn’t help them or they think whatever little help he may provide is not enough to give him immunity AND he would help defense a whole lot more potentially. This is where it sucks to be defense - you have no power to give immunity!

Why not put him up there and let him plead the 5th ?

Eric Nelson is now listing questions he intends to ask Morries Hall. Q's include Hall's interactions with GF, whether he provided controlled substances, why he left MN after the incident...

Cahill: "It seems like just about everything that you want to ask him...he would have a legitimate right to invoke his 5th Amend. rights against compelled self incrimination & that being how GF appeared when he was back in the car & falling asleep suddenly."

The defense needs to give up the drug use. That is not what killed GF!
