It sure seems like that could have waiting until this trial was over. I know with the media coverage today on this that some PJ or already seated jurors are going to hear this and it is very very prejudicial. The timing is really not good. Usually the civil trial follows the State trial.

For good reason... SMH.

Many times it is done to bring out testimony that would not have been allowed if it had not been done.. I need to catch up to see if that is what happened.

I am disappointed with the lawyer if this indeed impacts trial, and they didn't get testimony which otherwise would have not been obtained.

Yes, there are situations to do civil trial for such... and I did not follow AT ALL.

What came in during the civil trial that the criminal trial would not have gleaned?

I'm not liking this maybe... as to impact to this trial MOO... I think... hmmmm

Keep in mind that it's likely the insurance company that agreed to the settlement.

(Long ago I was a SteelTownGirl!!!)

jmho ymmv lrr
Minneapolis is self insured so this comes out of their own funds. So the city council decided this, not an insurance company.

Maybe the family will do good with the money like reforming black youth & communities.

not much progress made today....such young jurors...we need some age balance here...at least one more woman for today. I am still trouble by juror 9 the "excited " young woman who said "awesome" when selected.

IMO, this exuberant young lady might be already planning her wardrobe and makeup for her upcoming Oprah interview....
I also feel that she might be one of the first to be 'excused' as the trial progresses....

I couldn't agree more. If the City Counsel had a spine, they would have waited for the criminal trial to be over. When they are, and have been trying to replace the entire Police Department with a"Public Safety Agency" it's obvious they have caved. They wanted to settle before the trial because the city is being held hostage pending a guilty verdict.

So, let's break this down. 27 million settled in a civil suit without a trial. A settlement before the criminal trial that may acquit a man that's innocent until proven guilty, unless you are a city counsel member, where the verdict has already been reached.

If the reason for a settlement/judgement is to make someone whole, then I agree that Floyd's family should be compensated.

George's family is entitled to funeral and burial expenses. Floyd Mayweather paid those, All 4 of them, ($88.500) so they didn't have any expenses.

Loss of income, wages and benefits suffered by the family. (which if this went to trial, the family would have to prove loss of income, any services like for example if an outside service cut the grass or cleaned the house etc also know as "pecuniary damages")
His child didn't lose wages and her entire college tuition is paid for by Kane West, so she didn't lose any.
Floyd has 2 brothers and sisters. Let's say they each earn $75,000 each a year. It's been 10 months since George died and I'm not sure if they are back to work yet, so let's say 1 year x $300,000.

Hospital expenses. I'm sure George had hospital expenses when he was taken to the hospital. Think $100,000 would cover that if he didn't have insurance or someone didn't pick up the tab?

Sorrow, Mental Anguish, and Loss of Solace and Companionship. (Non Economic Loss) The family would have to prove by preponderance of the evidence they suffered this, or they are not compensated.
Let's say for conversation sake, $1,000,000 each. 4 million.

So, a $4,475,000 loss, and a record $26,500,000 settlement. Let's not forget the $17,000,000 profit the family collected with the Go-Fund-Me. Were they not made whole before the lawsuit? I have never heard of an additional $500,000 awarded in a civil case to go to a neighborhood that as of now is an autonomous zone in which the taxpayers that got caught holding the bill for, can't even travel through.

I have a feeling that it is going to get a lot more expensive for the city and the taxpayers if Derek Chauvin is not convicted.

They were at 7/15 on Thursday - did they strike anybody on Friday? I thought I read that there was one PJ that was - or am I thinking wrong?

Thanks - I caught that one - I have prosecution at 5/9.

The first PJ was stricken by the defense yesterday ( 3/12 ) Juror # 42 I believe. That was their 8th strike. She was not questioned by the State at all.

Or assisting folks who have a family member that is a victim of police brutality, excessive force, etc. who may need help with legal fees, etc.

At the heart of Derek Chauvin’s trial is this question: What killed George Floyd?
Seven experts in toxicology, cardiology and illegal drug use consulted by The Washington Post largely disagreed with that idea, most of them strenuously. All but one said the autopsy findings and other court documents, coupled with the well-known chain of events that evening, made death by a fentanyl overdose unlikely to impossible. (One expert, Craig Beavers, chair of the American College of Cardiology’s cardiovascular team section, said he did not have enough information about all the circumstances to form a final conclusion.)

“From my review of the video and the autopsy report, I see nothing that makes me think he died of an opioid overdose,” said Kavita Babu, chief opioid officer and chief of the Division of Medical Toxicology at UMass Memorial Health Care in Worcester, Mass. Instead, she and others said, the defense uses events out of order and medical findings out of context to deflect blame from Chauvin to Floyd.

Two autopsies — one by a county medical examiner and another by a private medical examiner hired by Floyd’s family — as well as a review by military experts conducted for the federal government, reached the conclusion that Floyd died of cardiopulmonary arrest as the officers subduing him compressed his neck and chest.

Andrew Baker — the medical examiner in Minnesota’s Hennepin County, who is expected to be a key witness in the trial — formally declared Floyd’s death a homicide in June, listing “cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression” as the cause of death.
