This trial is still in jury selection process. Hope we can focus on jury selection for now and postpone arguments about events that may not even happen:
i.e.: total sequestration, trial delay, change of venue. But......that is just my opinion.

I do consider that a remedy by the court would be to delay.

Having another jurisdiction would delay to meet the same point... so delay may be an option?

And put THAT option to the defense. Even moving the trial, many have seen and could be influencing if done immediately... so what to do? Dunno. I REALLY do not like an option of sequestration during trial. Horse has left the barn of that one... so to speak.

What time are we coming back today? I thought by now, but still a seal

Delay?
Keep this in mind.

We are off & running with some fierce arguments over $27M settlement. Defense wants a strike back for having to dismiss Juror #69 when he had knowledge of settlement. State fiercely opposes. We also just learned this prospective jury pool is *329.* 1st time that # confirmed @FOX9

Judge Cahill will NOT reinstate a strike for defense. Reiterates he will not hesitate to dismiss prospective jurors for cause moving forward if they come into court w/ knowledge of prejudicial pretrial publicity inc $27M settlement & failed murder-3 plea negotiations that leaked.

Juror #71 on witness stand now. And he immediately articulates the issue facing the court w/ pre-trial publicity. He's a guy who tried to avoid the news in recent months, but came across headlines & mentions inc $27M #GeorgeFloyd family settlement. Can he still serve impartially?

#DerekChauvinTrial - Defense attorney Eric Nelson is questioning why he had to use one of his strikes on that last juror before lunch. He says he should have been dismissed for cause and says there will be the same issue with the jurors coming up

39m
Spc. Asst. A.G. Steve Schleicher says 329 potential jurors have been identified in this case and they still have a long ways to go and plenty of time and people to get to a full jury.

32m
Judge says again that the timing of the civil settlement is "unfortunate" but also says more unfortunate than that were articles before jury selection started that talked about a plea deal being denied on the 3rd degree murder charge early on @LawCrimeNetwork

31m
Judge denies defense request to get that strike back. Now the afternoon group of 4 potential jurors are in the courtroom getting group instruction from the judge

19m
PJ 71, Male. Media exposure: Heard about 'some sort of settlement" last week. Charges being added or substracted, "something about a 3rd degree charge" He heard there was $27 M settlement to the family.

18m
- PJ 71 doesn't feel like any information he's heard since he filled out the questionnaire about the case pushes him to one side or the other.

14m
PJ 71 describing himself - he loves his family, has small children, says he's fun to be around

11m
- PJ 71 says he feels a little uncomfortable at the idea his name could be released at a future date. Doesn't want to be put in the "public's crosshairs".

#DerekChauvinTrial - PJ 71 about the video says the look on Chauvin's face is "burnt into my memory." He wrote on the questionnaire that he feels Chauvin took Floyd's life, "..the video shows what it shows." When Nelson asked if he still agrees with what he wrote, he said yes.

2m
PJ 71 wrote said he's not sure watching it again in court would be any different than watching it at home. He says he can "try" to put it out of his mind and be fair and partial. When pressed further he says, "Yes" but again "I'll try..."

State seems to want this juror pretty badly.

I was wondering why an anonymous jury could not be empaneled, to protect the jurors. So I had a look and I see that it is a 'fundamental right' for others to know who they are - after the trial.

Also, WBUR challenged a judge who gave jurors a right to privacy, in 2019, and "this significant gain for journalism" was granted.

My opinion again. Defense wants this juror gone, but doesn't want to waste another strike.

#DerekChauvinTrial - Judge asks PJ 71 to step out while they discuss things. Audio has been cut in court.

11m
Audio is back. PJ 71 still out of the room. Attorneys arguing if this juror should be dismissed for cause.

10m
Prosecution wants the opportunity to question PJ 71. Judge is asking juror to come back in.

6m
PJ71 - under questioning by the state he says he could hold the government to its burden of proving the case beyond a reasonable doubt. He said "I'll do everything I can to be fair...."

3m
Now back to defense questioning PJ 71. He brings up again how juror wrote on questionnaire that he "can't unsee" what he saw on the video. Also, "I have watched the video and have an opinion of what I watched and witnessed with my own eyes"

3m
PJ71 admits he's wrestling with it in his head right now. But says if he was chosen he would do "what I can to listen to what is presented to me..."

2m
PJ71 says he can apply presumption of innocence.

Okay - unfortunately, it is now my bedtime... so if someone wants to take over - knock yourself out! :)

@71 the grilling of this pj is really beyond what any inquiry should be. I really don't know what is going on here. Then the judge stops it and leaves abruptly. What is going on?

Juror 71 being questioned.. Nelson appears frustrated once again as, despite answers on questionnaire seeming to strongly believe Chauvin killed Floyd, 71 says can be fair.

Judge Cahill jumps in and asks more... and 71 relents a little.

After attorneys discuss outside #71's presence, he is brought back in for prosecutors to question. Schleicher thinks if he's more specific about whether 71 can apply the law to the evidence he hears -- he can show 71 can be impartial.

Scheicher used a series of questions to rehabilitate Juror #71 -- who now says he would be fair and could even vote not guilty if that's what the evidence show.

Now Nelson is trying again... in an effort to get Judge Cahill to strike the juror for cause.

Cahill called for the afternoon recess... with Juror #71's fate still undetermined.

Chauvin’s defense is again, bringing up the May 2019 arrest of George Floyd where he spit out drugs. They want to be able to use that as evidence. Judge Cahill had decided not to allow it previously.

Assumption is Chauvin’s team is trying to establish modis operandi when Floyd is stopped by police, trying to build the argument that Floyd died because of a drug overdose and not because of Chauvin’s knee on his neck.

Judge Cahill says he will likely deny again today but will hear from prosecutor Frank.

Prosecution says this is really just a smear Floyd’s character and is a desperate move on the defense part.

May I ask why the defense is wanting this in?

I haven't been able to keep up with this case like I hoped I would due to several of our family members, and friends having Covid.

I missed getting to read the autopsy report (if it was in the media) so I'm assuming George's death was due to being asphyxiated, right? TIA, JG.

The PJ71 answers questions with "I will try"
The answer the lawyers are looking for is "I WILL"
