The Pledge of Allegiance was written by Francis Bellamy in the late 1800’s, however there have been many edits to what he originally wrote and God was NOT mentioned in the first drafts of the pledge. The words “One nation under God” weren’t added to it until 1954, when Congress voted on Flag Day to add in that language, during the Cold War.

The pledge also says “liberty and justice FOR ALL” (and that was in the original pledge written in 1892). But God wasn’t mentioned in the first incarnation of the pledge. And our country was NOT founded on one nation, under God.
