GUILTY MN - Madeline Jane Kingsbury, 26, mother of 2, Winona, 31 Mar 2023 *arrest* #2

  • #941
One key part of the conversation is about Fravel wanting to know why the relationship was coming to an end, wishing Kingsbury would “lay it all out there.” Kingsbury would send long text messages back to Fravel saying how it was years of build-up that led to this, and that while she still cares about him, she didn’t think she could ever feel the same about their relationship again. Kingsbury would continuously apologize to Fravel for the way things went between them and said the last thing she wanted to do was “hurt him again.”

The defense showed the jury text messages from Kingsbury asking Fravel for sex as recently as one month before she disappeared. They also showed her searches on various 🤬🤬🤬🤬 sites, one of which was for “rough sex.”

A few days before she went missing, Kingsbury googled “coming clean about cheating”; evidence the state attempted to prevent from being in the trial. The judge agreed with Fravel’s team that it is “absolutely relevant.”

As week four of the trial got underway, Monday was supposed to be a critical day of testimony, but instead, it turned into a grueling face-off between attorneys.
  • 2+ hours were spent w/o the jury as prosecutors and defense tried to throw out evidence and testimony.
  • The judge barred Kingsbury’s journal entries from being presented as evidence due to hearsay.
  • The defense objected to what Maddi's bio mom would testify about, but the judge sided with the state.
  • As of now, the judge hasn’t decided if surveillance videos of Maddi's van will be admissible.
  • Maddi's family and friends are now expected to testify on Tuesday.
  • Police photos taken of AF showing him stripped to his shorts were shown to the courtroom showing bruises and scratches on his face and body.
  • The photos were taken about a week after Maddi went missing and showed two yellow bruises on Fravel’s chest, one on his left forearm, and another just above his left elbow.
  • Danielle Smith, a forensic scientist with the BCA examined the fitted sheet and the tape that was used to wrap Maddi’s body. She also examined fingernails that belonged to Maddi.
  • Colette Celichowski, another forensic scientist with the BCA specializes in identifying fingerprints. Once Smith was finished with her examination, Celichowski was in possession of a piece of cloth with tape attached to it. She examined them for fingerprints. Multiple hairs were collected from the tape.
  • Clair Beyer, also a forensic scientist with the BCA specializes in handling DNA samples. She tested multiple items, including a towel that brought back DNA likely belonging to both Maddi and AF. She said the hairs found during Celichowski’s examination brought back “insufficient DNA.”

According to her closest friends, on the day before Kingsbury went missing, she was getting ready to move out of her house with Fravel and start a new life.

The state’s star witness, Kingsbury’s best friend Katie Kolka, told the jury they spent that afternoon at her home after Kingsbury became concerned Fravel was following her around the house, upset she was moving out.

The next day, Kolka testified that Kingsbury never picked up the phone, and after Kolka tried all of her home’s doors and windows, she called Kingsbury’s sister and said it was time to get the police involved.

Kingsbury's sorority sister, Hailey Scott was the second witness to testify. Scott met Kingsbury in fall 2014 while pledging to Phi Beta Chi at Winona State.

Scott testified about a Facetime conversation she had with Kingsbury where Kingsbury was making dinner and Fravel entered the kitchen yelling about why the place was a mess. Scott testified she saw Fravel backhand Kingsbury before the phone fell to the floor face down. ...

The third witness called to the stand was Lauren Dubois, a friend of Madeline Kingsbury. ...

Dubois testified to a facetime conversation she had with Kingsbury in fall 2022. She described Kingsbury holding her youngest, Noah, on her hip while in the kitchen cooking dinner. Dubois said they were discussing Thanksgiving plans. She said 10 minutes into the phone call she heard Fravel yelling about why dinner wasn't ready and the state of the home. Dubois testified that Kingsbury responded to Fravel telling him that she was working on it. Dubois stated that she saw Fravel enter the frame of view and shove Kingsbury against a wall and the call ended shortly thereafter.

The first to do so is Kingsbury’s biological mother, Krista Hultgren. ...

Hultgren told the jury about one incident in September 2022 that happened while Kingsbury was getting her children ready for day care. Kingsbury texted her mother that Fravel “pushed her down on the couch, put his hands around her neck and said, ‘I can make you disappear like Gabby Petito.’”

In the few months before Kingsbury disappeared, she had broken up with Fravel and began dating his old fraternity brother, Spencer Sullivan.

Kingsbury and Sullivan had just begun their sexual relationship a few months before she disappeared, and one day before, Kingsbury spent the afternoon at his home.

The state has already proven Sullivan’s movements that day with an airtight alibi, but the defense still grilled the veteran. The defense pressed him on whether he saw any bruising on Kingsbury in her last year of life, and he replied that he had not.

Prosecutors are set to wrap up their case Thursday, and defense attorneys will call witnesses Friday. Closing arguments are scheduled for Monday, followed by jury deliberations.

Guess that means the defense will call only a handful of witnesses to testify for Fravel?

Just think, by this time next week we’ll have a guilty verdict and after his sentencing hearing, we’ll never have to see his ugly mug again.

Was the surveillance video in question ever presented as evidence by the prosecution? Last I read the judge was deciding if it should be admissible.

I'm thinking this was the video of the van. Fravel admitted to LE he was the one driving the van that day to move his belonging so I don't see why that would be questionable. According to Fravel he drove towards his parents and then turned around when he realized the items needed to go to a storage unit. True story is he turned around after dumping Maddie's body, but needed an explanation as to why he never arrived at his parents house.

The Adam Fravel murder trial is beginning to wrap up as the state rested its case this afternoon.

The lead investigator of the case took the stand Thursday morning as the state presented a timeline of events from the day Madeline Kingsbury disappeared.

The state also presented surveillance footage of what appears to be Kingsbury’s blue van driving south towards Mabel the day she disappeared. Mabel is where her body was eventually found.

The fate of Adam Fravel could be in the hands of the jury as soon as Monday.

Testimony is expected to continue into Friday. On Monday, the defense and prosecution will deliver their closing arguments and the jury will begin deliberations.

  • Investigator Nathan Smith testified that he began investigating the disappearance of Kingsbury on April 2, 2023, and was assigned to place a GPS tracker on the car that police anticipated Fravel would be driving.
  • Investigator Steven Garrett said he searched 198th Street, the road where Kingsbury’s body was found, by ATV. He did not see anything “unusual” at the bottom of the ditches on the side of the road.
  • Fravel’s brother, Ryan, was the third witness and testified that he never witnessed any fighting between Kingsbury and Adam, nor did he ever see any bruises on Kingsbury.
  • Raymond Curtis, a neighbor of the Fravels’ Mabel residence was asked about the backside of his property, and said the field is on top of a hill and isn’t visible from his backyard. Curtis also testified that there are no ATV trails on his property.
  • Robert Albrecht, a neighbor of Fravel's and Kingsbury’s, testified that on March 31, 2023, he went outside to smoke a cigarette when he saw “an unidentified person” near the their residence. That's it? That's all they had to use in Fravel's defense? :)

Robert Albrecht, who lived next to Adam and Kingsbury before she went missing, testified he was smoking outside his home when he saw a slender person walking on the property that morning.

But Albrecht had to review what he previously told police — he couldn’t initially remember what time of day he saw the person, nor could he make out any features. He confirmed who he saw wasn’t Fravel, however.

Prosecuting attorney Phillip Prokopowicz highlighted the couple’s breakup and Kingsbury’s decision to start dating an old friend. He said Fravel was “emotionally and financially dependent” on Kingsbury, was jealous of her new relationship and “would never allow another man to raise his children.”

Bauer spent more than an hour accusing law enforcement of shoddy police work and tunnel vision in pursuing Fravel as a suspect. He argued that testimony from Kingsbury’s friends shouldn’t be trusted, saying they never reported to police instances where they allegedly saw Kingsbury being abused or had bruises on her body. Bauer said Kingsbury’s relationship with another man showed she was never controlled, implying she may have been embarrassed to admit to others that bruises were from sex.

Prokopowicz ended by laying out a collection of physical evidence that, while circumstantial, points to Fravel as Maddi's killer, according to investigators - A towel found wrapped around Maddi's head across her nose and mouth, identical to a towel captured in a picture of the couple's bathroom; a sheet Kingsbury's remains were found in that resembled one missing from an air mattress set up in their home; and surveillance cameras that were operational on March 24 but disconnected March 29 and found in the couple's garage.

The jury began deliberating on Wednesday afternoon and is expected to continue until 9:30 p.m. and reconvene on Thursday morning if no verdict is reached.
