Ally Steinfeld case: Third suspect in Texas County trans teen's murder sentenced to 8 years

July 10, 2019

"A third suspect was sentenced to 8 years in prison for her role in the 2017 murder of a transgender teen in Texas County.

Briana Calderas, 26, originally was charged with first-degree murder, but she instead entered guilty pleas in May to lesser charges of abandonment of a corpse, concealing a felony and tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution.

Calderas was sentenced to serve four years for each charge, but the sentences for concealing a felony and tampering with evidence are to be served concurrently.

She was sentenced Wednesday afternoon in Pulaski County...

Andrew Vrba, the man accused of stabbing Steinfeld, is charged with first-degree murder, abandonment of a corpse and armed criminal action. His case has been moved to Greene County, where he is scheduled to stand trial in 2020.

No motive was given in the probable cause statement.

According to Steinfeld's sister, Calderas was Steinfeld's girlfriend....

Texas County Prosecutor Parke J. Stevens Jr. is seeking the death penalty for Vrba. According to online court documents, Stevens intends to prove the following statutory aggravating circumstances: that the alleged murder in the first degree was "outrageously or wantonly vile, horrible or inhuman in that it involved torture, or depravity of mind."

Schauer, who is now about 20, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in December 2017.

Schauer was sentenced to 20 years in prison. As part of the plea agreement, the charge against Schauer was lowered from first-degree murder to second-degree murder.

Schauer filed a motion to vacate her sentence earlier last summer, arguing she had ineffective counsel from the public defender's office and her plea "was not knowledgeable or voluntary."

A fourth person, James T. Grigsby, 27, of Thayer, pleaded guilty to abandonment of a corpse and was sentenced to four years in prison."
