I'm still trying to decide whether to go to the art show tonight (I'm supposed to be exhibiting). It's in South St. Louis not that far from where the shoe store was looted a couple of nights ago. Facebook rumor has it that a shoe store in Maplewood was looted last night. Listening to local radio right now to see if that's really true. I didn't go grocery shopping in Maplewood (that's one city over from Brentwood where I live) on Monday night, went to Des Peres instead (that's where the two closest Aldi stores are!) and my gut feeling was kind of right there. If I go to the art show I'm leaving by 8 for sure. It's supposed to go until 1 am.
My Dad is going to South St. Louis today to look after my late Mom's uncle. I'll ask him how it looks there but I doubt anything is going on there during the day. My Dad offered to go to the art show with me if I decide to go, I started thinking maybe I should go with Dad today too! Neither of us have a gun so I don't know what either of us would do if there was trouble. I'd feel a lot worse if something happens to Dad than if it happens to me.
What I'm really worried about is that the media is not satisfied with the footage they got last night and will try to insert themselves in the story even more than they did and try to start something "better". I think the media is trying to draw this out. The people in Ferguson don't want their community turned into a war zone. Communists from Chicago are here to try to start a revolution. Another Facebook rumor is that Mid Rivers Mall is the next target for looters. That's nowhere near where you'd expect anything to be going on. I guess anywhere with shoe stores is fair game? Weird.
Well, all I can say is I think we're heading toward an era where this kind of thing is going to become more and more common. I think a civil war in this country is inevitable. Get ready for life during wartime. Get your emergency supplies together (I have them already for my outdoor activities), grow a garden so you'll at least have a little food, get a gun while it's still legal, that's my advice. I don't know when it will be, I hope it's not in my lifetime but I've observed it brewing since the 90s and things are unravelling more quickly than I thought. People have been trying to start it for a long time. I remember terrorists from the Seattle area were imported here in the late 90s to try to start one. Actually they were hanging out on the same block where this art show is supposed to be tonight - I remember that stood out in my mind because at that time I used to volunteer at an art studio on that street that served clients with mental illnesses and disabilities. They hope to provoke the police to the point where the lawless will get PO'd and rise up and take over, then whoever is left will fight it out to see who wins the revolution. I hope I'm wrong about what I see for this country's future.
Sonya610, you might be right about why this hasn't spread further than it has. I don't yet own a gun, no one in my family does that I know of, but some of my friends do and one keeps a loaded gun in every room of his house. I'm not nervous going over there because he doesn't allow alcohol or drugs at his parties and no kids either. If I get one I'll have to get a safe for my Jeep and my bedroom, a friend of my brother's was telling me about a safe he has for his Jeep which goes under the front seat and has GPS tracking on it and all kinds of other safety measures, I think he said it won't open without a fingerprint scan. That sounds pretty safe. I'm sure it's not cheap. I'll have to look into that. I refuse to just leave guns lying around even though I live alone. Calling 911 is great but usually all they can do is investigate how you died after the fact.
If you think I'm being too paranoid, I hope you're right. Just think though, about what happened in New Orleans and think about what will happen in cities when they can't make the payroll for the welfare checks. When will we get to that point? I hope no one reading this is alive to see it. It could be tomorrow, it could be in 50 years. But the way things are going now I don't think is sustainable forever. What will happen here if the New Madrid fault goes off again? It will be New Orleans Part Deux.
I wish the media was more interested in reporting accurate news than stirring things up to get ratings. I really need information to figure out my movements for the day! Instead I get rumors and faked internet pictures. At least the internet radio is coming in better today.
