Prayers for all those hard hit by these terrible tornado's! May the searchers find strength in looking for survivors and may the people of Joplin find comfort in knowing we all care about them and are waiting to hear what we can do to come to their aid!

High school grad sucked into tornado through sunroof as his father desperately tried to hold on (Daily Mail)
The names and faces of the victims of the tornado which ravaged Joplin, Missouri, have emerged today along with terrifying stories from those who saw their families and friends swept into the deadly twister before them.

Will Norton was driving home from his school graduation when the tornado hit and he was sucked through the sunroof of his car.

His father desperately tried to hold on to his son as the car started to flip, but his seatbelt snapped and he went hurtling through the roof of the vehicle.

Tornado-hit Missouri town calls for improved warning systems (Guardian)
The authorities in the Missouri town devastated by the worst tornado in modern history tested their warning sirens on Tuesday amid calls for better alarm systems to get people out of reach of violent storms.
---
"We need to ask ourselves, what can we do to protect Americans?" Jack Hayes, the federal agency's director, said. "I have to say, it's not enough. We have to do more."
---
Storm sirens sounded more than 20 minutes before the tornado hit Joplin just before 6pm on Sunday – more than the 13- or 14-minute average warning time, said Greg Carbin, the meteorologist who heads the weather service's storm prediction centre. That should have been ample time to get to cover. But forecasters are growing concerned that people – especially those living in tornado-prone areas of the south and central United States – are becoming blase about warnings, or that the warnings are not getting through in time.

The line of storms forming and moving through Oklahoma right now looks to be headed (eventually) for Joplin, unless atmospheric conditions change and the storm systems lose power. It will take awhile to find out. Prayers again for Joplin, and everywhere, really.

The weather channel was just saying that there are up to 5 tornado's on the ground RIGHT NOW near Oklahoma City! This is just horrible!!! At least two people are already known to be killed in Oklahoma City.

"The tornado was on the ground for more than an hour Tuesday afternoon, giving forecasters plenty of time to warn residents. As it progressed eastward, it threatened Oklahoma City's northern neighborhoods and suburbs."

I'm about 45 min south of Joplin, and we've got bad weather coming tonight, too. I'm getting sick of this. This time I've just come down into the shelter early so I don't have to jump up and rush with all my shelter supplies. (Coffee drinks, nicotene lozenges, computer, weather radio, lanterns, gun, dog bed, first aid supplies, xanax, phone.) I can't leave most of this stuff down here because the door doesn't lock. Figured it would be more relaxing to just already be down here if a warning is issued.

Watching live streaming weather on the computer -- they just announced Joplin warning and also one near Ft. Smith, AR. Oh, and one for Talahina, OK.

Steadfast~ Smart thinking! Be prepared and stay safe.

I was scared last week when we had a tornado a mile from our house.... And it was only an F1..... I cannot imagine what everyone is feeling right now with the unknowns!

We're under a warning now, but the actual rotation shouldn't be here for about half an hour.

It is so heartening for me to read all of your comments, concerns and prayers for the residents of a small mid-western town name Joplin, a town most people have never heard of. I grew up in Springfield, MO, about a 45 minute straight east on I-44, my Aunt, Uncle and 3 cousins have lived in Joplin for over 30 yrs. My Grandmother is buried in the Joplin cemetary. I spoke to my Mom earlier tonight (it is her brother who lives in Joplin with his family; Mom lives in Springfield) and she still has not been able to make contact with him. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
I spent a lot of summers in Joplin as a child and the pictures I have been seeing are stunning. It is unrecognizable. Growing up in that area it has been strange for me, living in NYC, to see all of the local newspapers, as well as the national papers, like the NYTimes featuring Joplin on their front pages. Being so far away from my family, that actually makes me feel a little closer - knowing that the rest of the country is aware of the devestation and have nothing but well wishes and concern for the Joplin residents.

Thank you all - it means alot. Joplin may be but a small speck on the map but the families and the community are larger than life to those who live there. It is a pretty insular community and a lot of the people who live in Joplin have lived there their whole lives, built their lives and lived their lives there - it is all they have. It is their home. Please continue to keep all of the residents in your thoughts and prayers and make donations through the various relief orgs. if you are able.
