MO - Tornado Slams Joplin

  • #161
Steadfast, you stay safe girl!

I think we'll be fine. They're saying our storm has weakened quite a bit abd is now disorganized. Vito and I are still under the work bench down here, but mainly just in case things change suddenly.

Our tornado warning just got cancelled while I was writing that. Good thing, too, because there are spiders under here!

It is so heartening for me to read all of your comments, concerns and prayers for the residents of a small mid-western town name Joplin, a town most people have never heard of. I grew up in Springfield, MO, about a 45 minute straight east on I-44, my Aunt, Uncle and 3 cousins have lived in Joplin for over 30 yrs. My Grandmother is buried in the Joplin cemetary. I spoke to my Mom earlier tonight (it is her brother who lives in Joplin with his family; Mom lives in Springfield) and she still has not been able to make contact with him. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
I spent a lot of summers in Joplin as a child and the pictures I have been seeing are stunning. It is unrecognizable. Growing up in that area it has been strange for me, living in NYC, to see all of the local newspapers, as well as the national papers, like the NYTimes featuring Joplin on their front pages. Being so far away from my family, that actually makes me feel a little closer - knowing that the rest of the country is aware of the devestation and have nothing but well wishes and concern for the Joplin residents.

Thank you all - it means alot. Joplin may be but a small speck on the map but the families and the community are larger than life to those who live there. It is a pretty insular community and a lot of the people who live in Joplin have lived there their whole lives, built their lives and lived their lives there - it is all they have. It is their home. Please continue to keep all of the residents in your thoughts and prayers and make donations through the various relief orgs. if you are able.
Thanks Gaia for your great post. I'm a West Coaster, hardly been east of it. But there is some reason I knew about Joplin even way back growing up. Something put it on the map for me. xox

News says Heavener, OK, is getting it bad right now. Strong rotation and large hail.

Sirens going off in Siloam Springs, AR, too.

Gaia, I think Joplin is probably known to most Americans. Kind of famous in music lore. It's heartbreaking to think of the tragedy there.

I thought so too until this happened and talked about to co-workers, friends, etc and none of them had even heard of Joplin (except to ask me if that was where Scott Joplin was born.....). However, I am in NYC and a lot of New Yorkers, and I do think it is unintentionally, are so used to be here where so much is happening and so much of it makes the news, they tend to take for granted that there are states inbetween L.A. California and NYC. Most people here have never heard of Branson, which I found surprising, at first, because I thought Branson was pretty well known. 8 out of 10 people I have asked about Branson have no idea what I am talking about.
You may be quite right about most of the rest of the country being aware of Joplin.......NYC can be a little insular.....for having 8 million resident, if that makes any sense.

Here's a reader comment from a local rescue worker - the writer's picture appears in today's Joplin Globe - which speaks volumes about the sincere gratitude of the victims of the deadly storm for those who came to help them:
Parrish Evans wrote:

I am not the story here. What the picture doesn't show is the Fireman Derek I was assigned to that refused to go home for two days because he was there to work. He kept going till he passed out. The two deputies from Texas Co. that stayed with us the whole time standing guard. Tara and Chel from PAWS that just keep going. The SAR guy i met that drove all night from South Dakota to get there and went straight to work. The rescue worker I saw wrap up his bleeding feet with a paper towel and put his boots on and stagger back out to the field or the Marine Major that took over the control headquarters. Im the picture here but im not the story.

Search for missing baby captures hearts far from Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. | The baby, 16-month-old Skyular Logsdon, was sucked away by the storm.

One second he was safe at home with his mom and dad and grandparents. Then, in the swirl of an EF5 tornado, the house at 26th Street and Maiden Lane was reduced to sticks.

Mom flew. Dad flew. Grandparents were tossed 100 feet away, dropping onto wet grass. Faces were gashed, limbs broken.

Skyular vanished.

If he is going to be found, today’s the day, his family hopes.

Meanwhile, it's politics as usual in Washington:

http://thinkprogress.org/2011/05/25/aderholt-disaster-relief-cuts/

This probably deserves its own thread and I apologize if this seems partisan. Both parties play these games, for heaven's sake can't this man just put a sock in it at least while bodies are still being recovered?

I am about a 100 miles North of Joplin. We are heartbroken for our neighbors, famillies, and friends. We feel powerless to help, as donations and volunteers are being sent away. There is simply no place to store donations, and no way to control the influx of people looking to help. At the moment I type this, there is another tornado on the ground in KC, we sit smack dab in the middle of these two cities. We are frightened. We had an EF0 here 2 weeks ago and it dropped trees all over my house, I simly cannot comprehend what an EF5 would be like. Prayers to all my neighbors, stay safe, stay aware!

Can anyone let me know if the animal shelter is ok??
Several of my rescue dogs came from that shelter and came here on transports :( :(
It took me awhile, but finally I found an article in today's Globe online:

Pets, owners are reunited (Joplin Globe)
JOPLIN, Mo. — Batman, a golden retriever mix, was greeted hugs and smiles when he was reunited with his owner this afternoon at the Joplin Humane Society.

“I was really scared, I didn’t think I was going to find him,” said Jeremy Samuel of Joplin. “I’m excited. I’m ecstatic.”

Batman was among hundreds of animals left homeless by Sunday’s tornado. Several agencies are working to find and house the wayward pets at shelters across the city.

The Joplin Humane Society, 5171 North Main St., is taking in animals from the tornado, with the help of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Temporary housing has been set up in large metal warehouses next to the Humane Society, where Dent and Ding Appliance is located.

Remains of Skyular Logsdon found in Joplin, family member says (Kansas City Star)

The remains of Skyular Logsdon, a 16-month-old who disappeared during the tornado Sunday in Joplin, were identified at a morgue there on Wednesday evening, a family member said.

The search for Skyular, who was ripped from his mother’s arms by the storm, attracted national attention.

The little boy’s great-uncle made the identification, said Rhonda Brewer, the stepmother of the child’s uncle. Skyular’s father was recently released from the hospital, and his mother is still being treated.
