Sooooooooooooooooooo . . . is dad in the picture, i wonder? did mom have to learn to be tough alone?

In the interview she says we bought the car and we told him the rules. So either it is his dad or step dad, I guess..LOL

I don't care if it was open or not. He is underage and shouldn't have alcohol in the car period. Especially under the front seat!

When we have open bottles and have to drive, we put them in the trunk.

  • #146
Yep and being found under the front seat shouts that the alcohol was his, imo. If it was some one elses. it would have been under another seat.

One thing to consider is that we don't know this kid's life story. Maybe he was always pushing buttons. This time he lost big time.

If he was a straight-A, all around great kid, no major issues, followed the rules most of the time etc., then maybe the parents, er, his mom wouldn't have gone to this extreme.

I have a feeling this isn't the first time he's tried to get away with something like this.

Taximom.
You're right of course.
Since his mom sold his car, which could be viewed as drastic punishment,I'd say this isn't the first time he's made a big mistake....but I'm guessing.

what a huge gas bill. and now he doesn't have a car, so mom has to drive him both ways? so she can't have a job now? that would be like... horrible. like... she would have to drive him there, drive back, then drive there to get him and back? or just drive there, wait on him then take him home. 6 hours. minimum.
He has to live there.

i'm just being an idiot assuming. you know what assuming does...

DES MOINES, Iowa - Jane Hambleton has dubbed herself the "meanest mom on the planet."

After finding alcohol in her son's car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone — by placing an ad in the local newspaper.

Good for her!

--->>>Have not read the entire thread yet, but I did read the article.
Couple thingies here, IF IF her son lied about the alcohol that might be one of the bigger problems too. IF IF he told the truth, then he will be enabled to go riding with the one who had the 'alcohol'. I would be getting fingerprints from the bottle etc.

At 18 and 19 he is old enough to serve in Americas military and be trained to fight and kill people on our behalf.

I would want to verify his honesty IF IF he was lying to me.

I could fly with that. Maybe he's had alcohol or other problems before that are not being mentioned in the articles and she doesn't want to be a party to it anymore. Maybe that is why she is going with this severe punishment. Otherwise... why the "flying off the handle"?
If he doesn't live at home, it makes it soooooo much easier to take the car away...

Little off topic, a number of states are trying again to lower the drinking age.
Using the basis on what you just said Camper.
Wisc is 18 to drink, however no open liquor in the car.

IT used to be 18 in Wisc to drink when I was a girl pharlap. We would all drive over the border from the Chicago suburbs on the weekends to drink.

Hate to say, I remember when it was 18 in Illinois.... 1963?
Then they raised it. And again lowered it in 1973. And again raised it in 1980...

OH I just re read your post and see you are saying Ill not WI. At one point they changed the drnking age in ILL to 18-20 yo's could drink beer and wine but no hard alcohol. That was in the 70's also.

ETA: all the kids driving over the border to drink from ILL to WI was one of the big reasons they raised it up again. It was a real hazard. So now they have lowered again?

You think he lives at home and drives 3 hours away for class each day??

It doesn't say he goes full time and actually many full time programs can be completed with only two-three days a week schedules

NY law is 21. My agreement is actually until my daughter is 22.
That covers 4 years of school.

As far as setting rules for "adult" children. I try to be reasonable.
I expect everybody in our home to be respectful of each other.
I will not sit back and allow anything illegal or dangerous. Other than that
I do allow my children room to grow and make her own mistakes, as well as their own accomplishements.

Back to this situation, the mother and the son had an agreement. He broke his end of the promise, so he had to suffer the consequences.
It doesn't matter if anyone thinks it's too harsh, he agreed to it.

I think this is the best post on the entire thread (and I haven't even made it past this one yet, LOL :D).

Too funny Camper, that's the same thing I thought but I figured that would be considered too extreme.... but eh, being how it's in line with my hobby yeah, that's exactly what I would have done. :)
