AZ Nancy Guthrie, 84, (mother of TODAY Show host Savannah Guthrie) missing - last seen in the Catalina foothills area on Jan 31, 2026

If it is C, feels like they’d know pretty fast. His vehicles were seized and searched. He lives in a home with 7 people, he wasn’t bringing Nancy there. Their electronics were seized, so they’d know if he was transmitting Bitcoin requests.

It just doesn’t seem like it’s him. Also evidenced by them not finding anything to hold him on.

Anyone have the photo or video of the perp without gun showing and no backpack on? Did they release just the still pic or was there a video along with it?

  • #22,083
So the suspect might return to the scene of the crime? Perhaps at night?
After a crime that is getting so much media coverage? Highly unlikely.

Also, who chooses to use a backpack with reflective material when committing a crime??? Going back to look at the full video, as the perp approaches the porch, the reflective material on the backpack straps is so bright that I thought he had two lights attached there!
I heard a retired FBI agent on my local radio station say that this was not done by a professional and was not well planned. Having the holster in the front and not the side is very unusual. He appears not to have duct tape handy. He fumbles around, trying to cover the camera. Also, he's wearing a distinctive jacket and backpack.

Something isn’t adding up. An anonymous tip isn’t usually divulged to stir up drama like this. Also, I don’t believe you can get a search warrant for a home based on the shape of someone’s eyes.

So many things aren’t even making sense right now in this case. I’m not even sure releasing the security footage right away was a good idea. It’s wasting time when the public isn’t really going to recognize someone based on the pics given.
You know about the concept of Swatting, right? I think it's similar here. If the FBI gets a tip saying, "I recognized my cousin C from the doorbell footage and when I went over to his house just now, I saw a frightened old lady who looked like Nancy peering out the window, here's his address," they have an obligation to take that seriously. Hopefully, if this was a false tip, the tipster is held responsible for giving false information.

ETA: and again, I want to emphasize that LE did not intend for the news of this search/interview to become public, IMO

everything about this is just off.

perp looks ridiculous and facial hair looks painted
perp wearing layers of gloves disguising his hands or just protecting against rips in the outer glove
maybe 2 masks on this individual
why does his head look so huge? hair? beard? extra hats underneath?
entire person looks heavily layered
idiotic lantana gathering ( but resourceful to save his gloves from tearing as he rips off camera).
someone on here said they use those white holsters in Italian police dept? ( no link?)
perp seems too relaxed to be the only perp on the scene
did the perp proceed around back to break in or did someone else break in the back? when in the sequence did this guy show up?

mOO
White holster: Nah, colors look different on IR camera footage.
2 pairs gloves: a thicker glove under a nitrile glove almost removes all the risk of a print transfer through a thin/tight glove, not to mention if you ditch the outer gloves, you're not leaving a print or DNA inside.

I'm on blood thinners and get nose bleeds all the time. I've left a trail of large drops from the front door through the house to the kitchen. Often my nose starts bleeding and I don't know it. I may realize it when it drips on my shirt, but I don't want to get it on my shirt, so I lean forward to keep my shirt clean. It makes tear drop shapes on my shirt, and when I lean forward, it makes big, round drops on the floor until I can grab a tissue or paper towel. When I go back to clean it up, I've sometimes stepped in it, too. I think she was carried, probably over the perp's shoulder leaving blood drops with nothing to staunch the flow. Also, no footprints in the blood, so again, they (perp and maybe NG) walked there before she bled there. If she was walking, she would have stepped in it, too. He may not have known she was bleeding behind him. Now, if he hit her on the head, I think she would have bled more. Head wounds do generally bleed a lot, and the blood thinners could have increased that flow. OR, if she was already deceased, the blood wouldn't have flowed, but what was there could have dripped. I don't think that's the case because it wouldn't have been a steady drip, drip, drip, with similar sized drops all through the house. Whatever they found inside hasn't been revealed by LE so everything is speculation. Even if she had the nosebleed earlier, t was already dark, so she probably wasn't going outside to clean it then. If she had realized it, she would probably ask the gardener or someone to clean it the next day or two.
Great line of thought, here.

This photo shows the porch a little bit closer up.

About 4-5 tile rows down from the front wall and 5 tiles over, there might be some slight shoe prints, but it's hard (for me) to tell.

I'd expect there to be more smearing and footprints considering the amount of blood and the chaos of an abduction. If it was a straight march to a vehicle, I'd expect a more linear pattern. Was NG struck just outside the door, or was she delayed here for some reason before moving/being moved toward the road?

Carrying someone over your shoulder is really hard to do, though obviously not impossible. The masked man doesn't seem particularly big or strong, so I have my doubts he'd be able to do that. Now, with a partner - one holding the legs and the other the feet - it would seem more doable to me.

The private helicopter was a suggestion, I didn’t say anything about gondolas - that was another user - (but did ask if there were any rivers in the area).

As for the “animal attack”, I suggested animals could have eaten her body, not that she died because of an animal attack.

It’s simply a case of looking at the case from a different angle. I apologise if it has confused or upset anybody.

Which part is supposed to be misleading?
Trying to be helpful here, since you are new to WS. :)

Generally, if one of us has a thought that cannot be backed up with a media source, we put "In my opinion" "IMO" or "In my humble opinion" "IMHO" and list reasons for our thinking along those lines. IE: Media said this.... or LE said this..... IMHO it could it be..... then the community will discuss why or why they don't agree. But it generally starts based off something main stream media said or LE said.

...and always if a main stream media source is available post a link.

Hope this helps!

AND WELCOME TO WS! :D

Exactly my point. He may have seemed inexperienced and, indeed, fumbled quite a bit but , sadly, the fact remains that he has been successful thus far and right now that's all that matters.

With regards to the cameras, it's weird. The suspect walks up to the house hunched over, deliberately hiding his face, indicating he knows a camera is present. However he then straightens up, looks directly at it, thinks "oh, 🤬🤬🤬🤬" and realizes he's potentially being recorded, after which he grabs the brush to cover the lense. So on one hand, he's prepared but on the other, he isn't.

None of this makes sense.
I think he grabbed the lantana plant to cover the camera while he removed it, so there wasn’t more close ups of his face. Still very silly when a piece of tape could’ve covered it. Definitely shows lack of preparation. Also, if he walked closer to the alternate side of the camera the first time, he could’ve just hid next to it and smashed it with the back of the gun. He wouldn’t have been seen nearly as much as grabbing a handful of stems!

The stripe looks much too narrow to be the chest strap of a backpack.

Most, if not all, backpack chest straps have a connecting latch right in the middle of the chest where the two sides of the strap come together.

I don’t see that here.

IMO
These cheap packs do have narrow straps. Yeah I don't see the buckle clearly either but I don't see a lot of detail clearly. Dunno.

I did wonder if they’d try to dump Nancy near her own or AG’s house. Trying to make it seem like she’d been there the whole time.

It sounds outlandish, but it is possible. LE can’t possibly patrol every square mileage of land around them 24/7. A poor pizza delivery guy was able to stroll up to the house yesterday without anyone stopping him. (I obviously don’t think the perp would dump Nancy directly at her house, but I do think he could away with somewhere relatively close by)

That being said, I do hope their searching today is related to something more innocuous. Like hoping they abductor left clothing or other articles behind.

It seems the perp(s) planned for NG to exit through the front door. I don't know why. Because they didn't want to drive down the driveway but stay in front with the car? idk

jmo
I'm curious whether or not NG actually answered the front door or if the intruder actually didn't get in and went to the back door and forced his way in order to gain entrance.

I believe there were photos early on of a floodlight near the back door that was broken and hanging down.

Obviously it would have had to of been fairly quickly as to not give NG time to dial 911 unless she didn't hear the nest alert. moo

Edited to add: Obviously they had to of likely at least exited thru the front door due to the blood etc. But just something I've been wondering about.

Unless that was exactly what they wanted LE to think....

It is bizarre.

Maybe (and this IMO) they thought that any camera would be on the outside of the entryway? So as to see the entire walkway? Or maybe the thought that a floodlight/camera may be outside the entryway?

Then walks up and - oh crap - there is the camera by the door. Maybe he wasn't expecting it to be where it was.

OT, but we had a guy in our neighborhood who was attempting to break into homes a few years ago and he came to our house and went to our backdoor (which was blocked off from the main road by a garage and a fence on the backside) and bypassed our front door Ring camera. But he had no idea that we also had one in the backyard so he looked right at it before turning to leave when it lit up red and thus, that's the story of how he was caught.
