"Working on this documentary is likely one of the most important things I've ever done while working in journalism," Lovingood sid. "People ask me about the Deven murders and get caught up with the true-crime aspect of it, but the case is a part of something bigger: a foster care system that is deeply challenged. And that's not just my observation but also that of those we've interviewed, including lawmakers and people with connection to the system.

"My hope is that we bring change."

Blake Deven’s biological mother said he never wanted to go back home with his adopted mom after visits.

“I had a scar on the side of my neck from where he scratched me, clawing at me, begging me, not to let them put him back in her car,” said Felicia Chandler, Blake’s biological mom.

Chandler said those visits abruptly stopped and she was told her young son didn’t want to talk to her anymore. She was hoping this year she could reunite with her first born, since he would have turned 18 years old in May.

That was a huge red flag. Instead of finding out why he was so upset about going back to Avantae, the case worker stopped the visits with Felicia.
One day (I was about 3 years old) my dad took my mom to work because he had to have her car serviced. When she went to drop me off at daycare (in home daycare) he says I screamed and would not let go of her neck. He asked her if I had ever behaved that way before, she told him every morning. He told my mom "put her back in the car, she isn't going in that house". Turns out the babysitter had been keeping me in a locked room strapped to a chair and when we were served lunch we had to eat like dogs, licking food off the plate. The little boy that stayed there the same time as me was always locked in a closet and only let out to eat.

I have always paid very close to the behavior of children when around their caregivers because of this experience. Makes me sad she probably felt there was nothing she could do since she was not his legal "mom" anymore.

A lot has happened since I posted here in 2024. I am thankful there is resolution and praying for the siblings who survived.

Does anyone recall the article that said AD told them her moms anoxic brain injury was caused by an in home caregiver who fell asleep on the job? (It's on this thread somewhere, I just couldn't find it when I went back to look.)

No way that is true. They never let anyone in. I realize a stroke can happen... but there are other ways to obtain this injury AND if she had a history of high BP and her meds were withheld, that could have caused it. Anyway, I am just speculating here that they are probably researching moms brain injury to see what else they can charge her with. No doubt she only wanted her mom to stay with her so she could keep that money too.

FYI This concerned her mother's sudden readmission to the hospital less than two weeks after she was discharged following a long stay related to her stroke, not the circumstances of the stroke itself.

According to the Fayetteville Observer:

...[Judge] Jordan said the evidence showed that Maxwell was hospitalized after her stroke and was discharged to her daughter's home in February. Eleven days later, Maxwell was readmitted to the hospital and put into the ICU with pressure wounds, swelling, dehydration and sepsis from a urinary tract infection...

These would be the type of problems that can develop quickly given the mother's status, although probably not overnight because of a sleeping nurse, as she claimed! (MOO, although it does make me sort of wonder if the woman should have been discharged to home in the first place.)

The post up-thread where this is mentioned is here.

The system called PATH-NC won’t be available to all of North Carolina’s 100 counties when it launches in the spring, but the goal is to provide case workers with a way to understand a child's foster care history when they relocate.

PATH-NC would also let the state gather and interpret data as it relates to the outcome of child welfare cases. It includes foster care cases.
[snip]
The state is also looking at third-party agencies that vet foster parents who go on to adopt children. In the case of Avantae Deven, a Fayetteville woman charged with the murders of two of her adopted children, that vetting happened only at the county level.

Avantae Deven's murder trial is likely a couple years out. Cumberland County District Attorney Billy West is predicting 2027.
[snip]
West expects Fayetteville police to have that investigative file to his office by June.

After that, the file is presented to a grand jury possibly by the end of summer 2025.

Then, it would go to the Superior Court and could be there for about six months. After that, a trial date would be set.

He is 14. I just checked, he is one of the children she adopted and biological brother of Blake. Trenton Dawayne Shuler was Blake's first name.

Police said the person having the crisis said he was Blake Deven's brother and hadn't seen him in five years. He also told officers the last time he did see Blake the boy had a broken arm.

The investigator confirmed there were five children at the house who had been adopted from three different counties in North Carolina. This included three boys who are biologically related and two girls who are not related to each other or the boys.

He is one of the other two brothers of Blake who were also adopted by this woman.

No updates as to when the next hearing might be or where things are with prosecution of Avantae's crimes.
