DAY OF NATIONAL MOURNING IN AUSTRALIA

For the Day of National Mourning in The Netherlands, poet Ingmar Heytze, offical poet of the city of Utrecht, wrote a poem called 'National Mourning'
http://www.eenvandaag.nl/binnenland/..._ingmar_heytze

I know that many Australians have Dutch ancestors or were Dutch themselves and still speak the language, and for those who don't, I have made an attempt to translate this very raw and tender poem into English, to be shared on this special occasion.
All mistakes are my own, and the original is much better, just listen to Ingmar Heytze in the video, but I hope this translation will give you an idea of what it is about.
(I have posted this before, and now I post it again, minus the mistake that I spotted too late.)

National Mourning

I've seen it all. Papers, books, and the monkey in the grass
That monkey, later in a strange hand as a trophy or no, a powerless
gesture of someone who was just a father. Who says what you see,

who spins his yarn, who's counting his money. Who swallows his tears and goes
broken. Who claims the tears of a stranger. I have heard them
all, the names, the column that crying to heaven painfully slow

had to make it's way home from a country where you never want
to be found dead. I've watched it all. It runs out under my eyes,
until I know no more than this: when it comes to the sea

there are children who run into the surf, the very first time, and children
who say, "It's too much, take me home." This child am I,

I stand there and watch and I want to get in but mourning is black,
grief is deep, grief is cold. I want to go home. The grief is too great.

re red and bold - than what? If diplomatic measures fail? Russia invades??? :notgood:

Maybe. Nobody knows. But the call for a 'humanitarian mission' is seen a a political preparation to invade Eastern Ukraine and stop the Ukranian Government from killing it's own Ukranians. (Which they do, there is no denying)

OR... stop the Ukrainian Government from killing "Russian" citizens... you know, like Hitler had to "protect" the German citizens in Poland, Austria, etc. etc.... :maddening: I can just imagine what kind of "humanitarian mission" Putin has in mind!! :hills:

We are reporting that we are out of the 'first phase' of the search .. that we have done what we can as swiftly as safely allowed. The dogs have, no doubt, helped considerably. Leaflets have been passed to local villagers on how to return debris of the crash.

... Mr Houston’s statement is replete with positives.

“The first phase of the Dutch-led humanitarian mission to the crash site of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 has concluded,” he said, adding: “Our purpose was to recover remains from the site. We did this swiftly and thoroughly, while it was safe to do so.”

I don't usually say much but the suffering I have seen with this plane crash, the innocent lives lost both on the plane and the innocent victims of Ukraine in this war... well I am unsettled and sick at heart. I am afraid Putin will not be satisfied with the blood he will consume from this war, all of the innocent lives that will be lost, present and future. Putin is bloodthirsty like Hitler was and he will not stop until his heart stops beating in his chest. This is not the life I want for my children, my daughter and 5 year old grandson. We are relatively safe on American soil as for now. But what about the future? Will my children live to see WW3? Will I? Will my precious little Derek, now 5, have to go fight for our country? Or will Derek have to fight a megalomaniac such as Putin on American soil? OH God! I cry, please say NO! I'm so powerless and afraid for my children, for my sweet daughter Kathy and her baby Derek, my only child and grandchild. I will spend this night on my knees praying for a stop to all of this bloodletting.

Sadly my friends, this is Magpie asking any who will pray with me to do so tonight. My tears just won't stop.

I'm here, my candles are lit (Advance Australia Fair) as they are for Nederlandse Mensen & Negaraku, Malaysia, and Queen and Country, Britain. I pray for an end, but as an ethno historian....I despair.
Upon all of your creations, Oh Lord, have mercy. Whether you believe in God, Goddess, Jehovah, Buddha, Allah, Zoroaster. This world is turning upside down. Peace, we all just want peace. Pray for it, I pray hard.

Katie Noonan sings I am Australian at the MH17 Memorial Service, just a little while ago. It is very, very moving and beautiful.

canada imposes new travel and economic sanctions against russia/putin:

"The Putin regime's continued illegal occupation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula and its provocative military activity in eastern Ukraine remains a grave concern to Canada and the international community," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a written statement announcing the sanctions.

"Export restrictions announced by the European Union with respect to military and military dual-use goods destined to Russia are already in place in Canada. We are also committed to imposing the necessary regulations to enact export restrictions on technologies used in Russia's oil exploration and extraction sector. Those will be implemented in parallel with our allies."

We are one but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice
I am, you are, we are Australian

There are no words of comfort
That can help to ease the pain
Losing your loved ones, the memories will remain
Within the silent tears you'll find the strength to carry on
You're not alone, we are with you
We are Australian

I'm a Luddite & can't bring photos over. I wish I could have brought Marly's photo over for the Netherlands. I hope I get this right, ZaZara, if not, forgive, because my sentiment is there in the words.

Does anyone know of plans for a memorial service for the British citizens killed? I believe one has been identified?

A military plane will land at Eindhoven airport on Thursday evening carrying personal belongings of the victims of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash in Ukraine.

The belongings, which include photo albums, jewellery, cameras, diaries and passports, were collected by the team of investigators who were at the site from last Friday until the mission was broken off on Wednesday evening.

Also on the plane are items from a train carriage in the Ukraine town of Torez and belongings found by locals and handed to investigators on Wednesday.

The personal belongings will be handed over to the police for further investigation, the Telegraaf reports.

Hi Donamena, I think most Dutch agree with the decision, so they want it too.
And Justice will be done, maybe not in a big way, but "a little justice".

I was very inspired by the words of Dutch reporter Jeroen Akkermans, who took endless pictures of the debris and wrote a blog about the why:

You hope for a bit of justice, more you can't do.

That did not stop him from doing his job.

We have seen the best of many, so many others do their best unseen, and this is not over yet.

And now the Russian people may begin to suffer at the hands of their President .... food items imported by Russia from EU countries, North America and Australia have been sanctioned by Putin. Commentators say the Cold War has begun (again).

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says she is disappointed Russia has imposed a “full embargo” on food imports from Australia, arguing Moscow should have instead moved to halt the supply of heavy weapons to separatist rebels in Ukraine.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev told a government meeting on Thursday that "Russia is introducing a full embargo on import of beef, pork, fruit and vegetable produce, poultry, fish, cheese, milk and dairy products from the European Union, United States, Australia, Canada and Norway".

Mr Medvedev said Russia was also considering banning Western carriers from flying over Russia on flights to and from Asia - a move that would significantly swell costs and increase flight time.

He said the decision on that had not been made yet.

Interesting that the UK will be performing a post mortem on Liam Sweeney when his body is returned to England soon. I guess many countries may do that to ensure that the identification is correct? Or perhaps it is part of certain countries laws when there has been a death overseas?

The family are expecting Liam’s body to be flown to the West Midlands in the next few days.

A post-mortem will then be carried out by a British pathologist.

Barry added: “We have got to wait a few days before we get him home from Holland and he will be arriving into the East Midlands.

“They will then carry out a post mortem there.”
