There is no way those two will talk to LE. They haven't except to give clues on other possibilities since the first week of Susan's missing. She went missing on the 7th and he lawyered up the 13th. IMO, they will have to gather info...as they have been doing since and find Susan before arrest can be made. Then you have the problem of definitively connecting him to the evidence found for a conviction. After nearly two years, unless she was miraculously preserved in some way, it will be very hard to glean anything unless the bones can tell it...or a weapon found with her. IMO

It depends on how much evidence they have. That could change the complexion of how an interrogation plays out. If Steven, for example, wrote something in his journal about Topaz Mntn, that would be pretty incriminating if these remains are Susan. He then is facing jail time for obstruction of justice. Perhaps he could be offered immunity for confessing everything he knows. While he would deny involvement in the initial plot, it could then prompt JP to confess and share in how they both conspired in it if that did indeed happen. There certainly appears to be reason to suspect his dad's involvement.

MOO.

ETA: Changed my mind about offering immunity. The more I read, the more I suspect his direct involvement in bringing their marriage to the brink of divorce, and then telling JP to murder her. Still putting a working hypothesis together but that appears to be a possibility. MOO. (I will take this to the other thread on Steven Powell once ready to post about it.)

Thank you for this information.

Is there a thread for this aspect of the case? Can the fact that Steven Powell's journals were taken, the fact he has admitted an obsession about her, the fact he had photos and videos of her, the fact he wrote songs about her, the fact he stole her underwear, etc. make it ok to do a full sleuth of this character and his very own thread?
There is already a thread to discuss SP's relationship to Susan, but a "full sleuth" at this time would not be okay.

HS, here's a link to a thread about SP, started by Tricia, in regards to SP's crush on Susan. Lots of info.

Did Susan Powell's father-in-law have a "crush" on her?

Oh, the tweets sure slowed down today. Claims of cell phone coverage etc..One reporter posted early this morning he wouldn't be covering today, Nate Carlisle, the coverage was minimal all day today. I think someone shouldn't have reported something or the WVC PD are in full charge now of info. Not unusual but sure different from the info coming out since Tuesday.

Methodical excavation to preserve all evidence and remains. Caylee's case was different with scattered remains over a 1/2 or 1/4 acre area, lot's of documentation, it took from 12/11/08 to 12/20/08 before the LE released the crime scene.

So, a few or several more days we wait...

The public has endured a series of ups and downs during recent searches for Susan Powell. But we all might consider how tough it is for West Valley City police: They've found that their effort to be open about investigations both in Ely and near Delta has a downside.

Inviting Salt Lake City media organizations on a search in Ely, Nev., was an attempt to reignite interest in the Susan Powell investigation. But when the search turned up nothing, the media felt burned, and the public was confused.

Note: At the end of the video, they are covering the ground with a tarp. You can see the sifters and the "disturbed" ground. I wonder if they seen this from the airplane on Tuesday and brought the dogs in?

When was there a lack of interest in this case?

Wonder if it had anything to do with the chief arriving.....or the whole "remains" thing. ?

Remember yesterday the tweet from Ben Winslow, that said the funding for an anthropologist from the states budget was cut and they depended on one when they could get one available. How frustrating. Legal tape with it being Federal land also has slowed the progress down, but it will move forward quickly I think and 3 or more days seems reasonable with a weekend thrown in. Get it all in place and they'll get some questions answered. (ha ha, I'm trying to convince myself to be patient)

Yes, that's probably it. The reporters might already know the obstacles involved like waiting for the experts from other areas being available due to budgets cuts etc...

I'm glad though it slowed, it seems like some assembly & proper handling of this search has taken place. Better for a conviction, if it's Susan or anyone.

I think it could be Susan though.

Thanks! I am reading it now. :)

One more question if any one of our sleuthers know (as they often do): Is there an earlier similar case I could study where a father and son (or similar relationship) conspire together in a murder? TIA.

This one. Mom was in on it too, allegedly:

Different dynamics, but same outcome. IMO. :)

I'm wondering if anyone has seen JP or SP since these most recent developments. Are they staying inside? I know I saw one picture with news vehicles all over outside the home. Have there been and pics of him?

Karen Slover was (brutally) murdered by her former in-laws with the help of their son, her ex-husband. And there was a young doctor in Santa Barbara who was murdered by his ex's parents as well, both cases were mainly to get custody of the children. I can't think of the doctor's name just now; they went to his door with a plant and when he opened it, they shot him in the face...

I don't know this is not making sense. If you think there is a body down there dig it up. Anything in the dirt is not going anywhere and can be sifted at any time. I am not buying this show.

The shovels or whatever they're using would break the bones up, making them harder to get out. Bones that old are going to be very brittle, they might crumble and then that would make it much harder to identify them. They have to go slow and careful, so as not to cause too much damage to the bones.
Not to mention, they also need to preserve the crime scene as much as possible.

Search Crankycrankerson's album for Caylee's search. (thanks A!) It really shows the process involved. There an assembly line needed. Or there should be youtube videos from the news etc..it was a process for sure. But they stripped the vegitation too there.

I also heard during the press conference, the LE, is that Merrit?, that they had dug around the grave site? I think that could be possibly where they are at this point lining up the experts, so they kept productive today with only two techs doing the work, waiting for assistance to move the excavation forward. There can be evidence surrounding the actually grave. But just quessing via words stated.

(I'd rather be played by LE at this point and hope they already know!)

I still believe the involvement of media was specifically productive in the investigative process, not just to stir up the public's interest. I believe media play stirred up the "interest" of exactly the person it was intended to.

If LE is indeed searching at the right spot, all they needed to do was let word of the location get out to the media...JP would know if they were right or not. There really was no need to say more than that they found a specific area of interest to search, at this time, JMO.

From this image it does not look as if they have dug much at all.
