In my decades of serious engagement with multicultural communities, one of the key issues they complained about was that police did not take hate crimes seriously enough. Nazi graffiti on a synagogue or racist comments on a mosque wound communities deeply and, if allowed to go unchecked, can be the first steps someone takes towards acts like the NZ attacks.

An 18-year-old accused of sharing a live-stream of the Christchurch mosque mass shooting has been refused bail.

The teen faces two charges: one of sharing the live-stream and a second for posting a photograph of one of the mosques attacked with the message "target acquired" along with other chat messages "inciting extreme violence".

He appeared in Christchurch District Court today and was granted name suppression. He is due back in court next month.

Police have said he was not involved in the shootings.

The maximum sentence for each of the charges against the 18-year-old is 14 years' jail.

There has been a further update to the above:

The charge relating to distributing an objectionable publication is dated March 15, the day of the mosque shootings, court documents show.

The second charge, of making an objectionable publication, alleges the offence took place between March 8 – 15.

The teen was initially charged with publishing insulting material with intent to excite hostility or ill will against a group of persons on the basis of race, ethnicity, or national origins. That charge was withdrawn today and replaced by the two new charges.

PM Jacinda Ardern says cabinet made in principle decisions about reforming gun laws, which means that within 10 days of the horrific attack, they will have reformed laws to make the country safer.

She says:
* the cabinet was “completely unified” in reforming legislation.

* the attack was the worst in NZ's history and one of the most serious around the world in recent history and that the attack exposed some serious problems in NZ’s gun laws.

* the new laws are not aimed at any individual person and does not want them to be perceived as such.

She “applauds” those who have surrendered their weapons voluntarily and encourages others to do so.

New Zealand’s police chief, Mike Bush, said on Monday that they are certain there was only one attacker involved in the mass shooting. “I want to definitely state that we believe that there was only one attacker responsible for this horrendous event. That doesn’t mean there weren’t possibly other people in support, and that continues to form a very, very important part of our investigation”.

Bush said this is the largest investigation ever undertaken by the New Zealand police, involving more than 200 NZ police and experts, as well as investigators from the FBI and the Australian Federal Police.

He's an adult who is alleged to have committed crimes.

Over $7.7 million has been raised for victims of the Christchurch terror attacks across three fundraisers.

A Givealittle page has already raised more than $5.6 million - the most ever for a campaign since Givealittle began in 2008 - with tens of thousands of people donating.

More than $140,000 has also been donated to a fundraiser on Everyday Hero, which was set up after the volume of donations caused problems on the Givealittle site.

Both pages were set up by the NZ Council of Victim Support Groups, the government's primary provider of support services for people affected by homicide.

Another fundraiser on LaunchGood has raised more than $2m. The money will be distributed to families by the New Zealand Islamic Information Centre (NZIIC).

"No amount of money will bring back their loved ones, but we do hope to lessen their burden in some way," a statement on the page said.

"We want to thank everyone who has given a donation so far. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity and messages of support from Kiwis and around the world," said Kevin Tso, Chief Executive at Victim Support.

Givealittle has also announced that all the money donated to victims will go directly to their families.

After the way Nick Kaldas was treated by the top NSW cops ( it's a whole other story, google operation Prospect ) it shows his true character that he still wants to help & share his views

Obviously the tough question in any inquiry is going to be how the central city police response time was so slow to see officers on the scene

And just to be clear - NZ does not have any right to own a gun

It is a licensed activity which exists only within the laws and regulations created by Parliament.

At this stage, Ardern has not indicated how she would impose such a ban. e.g does she have power to regulate via current statutes? Or will this be a new law requiring a Parliamentary statute?

It's clear that you don't "need" it

Well into the 80s kiwi's still hunted with 303s, shotguns and single shot 22s and the world went on turning. That is how I learned. The gun industry became commercialised since then.

Of course many NZ hunters and collectors will be annoyed by a ban - with some justification given the investments they have made in jumping through all the legal hoops in the last 20 odd years. The bitter pill is NZ owners have staunchly supported strict regulation.

But public safety has to come first and NZ still has the chance to eliminate these weapons - especially given we also have almost no handguns.

JMO The last mass shooting in New Zealand before this Terrorist Attack was in 1997. It seems like New Zealander's are respectful of their Gun Laws & are peaceful people. JMO

That is the argument I have made myself over the years.

Our strict regulations and resulting highly quality gun culture appeared to have worked. Barriers to entry largely locked out the yahoos and crazies.

Today I can't really make that argument anymore.

It's a shame but this guy has ruined it for everyone else.

Two homes raided on Monday morning by Australia's Joint Counter Terrorism Force belong to the accused Christchurch shooter's family members.

Police executed search warrants at the homes of the shooter's mother and his sister, in northeastern New South Wales.

The raids were part of the ongoing investigation into the terrorist attack
