4-year-old Christchurch terrorist attack victim in serious but stable condition

4-year-old Christchurch terrorist attack victim in serious but stable condition

Mar 27 2019

"The condition of a 4-year-old girl who was gravely injured during the Christchurch terrorist attack appears to be improving, almost a fortnight on.

Alen Daraghmih was shot twice when a gunman opened fire at two mosques on March 15, killing 50.

She has been in a critical condition in Auckland's Starship Children's Hospital since the shooting.

On Wednesday morning an Auckland District Health Board spokeswoman said Alen was now in a "serious but stable condition".

This is the little one I posted about previously, been wondering how she was so thanks for the update. I hope she can go home soon.

The sinister meaning behind bible verse scrawled on Christchurch massacre memorial

The sinister meaning behind bible verse scrawled on Christchurch massacre memorial

27 March 2019

"Facebook has announced it will ban praise or support for white nationalism and white separatism as part of a stepped-up crackdown on hate speech.

The ban will be enforced starting next week at the leading online social network and its image-centric messaging service Instagram.

“It’s clear that these concepts are deeply linked to organised hate groups and have no place on our services,” the social network said in a statement. …

Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right, believed Facebook’s new ban could limit the spread of white nationalist rhetoric but doubted it would rid the world of the ideology.

“We’ll see if they are able to enforce this,” Potok said.

“There are thousands of white nationalists posts on Facebook every day. They weren’t able to stop the Christchurch video so it will be challenging to do this” he said, referring to the stream of the deadly attacks at New Zealand mosques earlier this month."

Yes, her condition has weighed heavy on my mind.
YES! It's a great relief to learn of her improvement.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison will be among dignitaries to attend New Zealand's National Remembrance Service this morning honouring victims of the Christchurch mosque terror attacks.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern hopes the remembrance service for victims of the Christchurch terror attacks will herald the beginning of necessary shifts in the country's society.

Delegates from nearly 60 countries will join thousands of New Zealanders for the service at Hagley Park in Christchurch, marking two weeks since a gunman claimed 50 lives in a mass shooting at two mosques.

Jacinda Ardern's speech at Christchurch memorial – full transcript
Full transcript of Ardern’s speech.
I love how unity will be NZ’s path forward from this horrid event.

Incredibly moving speech:

These stories, they now form part of our collective memories. They will remain with us forever. They are us. But with that memory comes a responsibility. A responsibility to be the place that we wish to be. A place that is diverse, that is welcoming, that is kind and compassionate. Those values represent the very best of us.

Well done Jacinda and the whole of New Zealand for making a change, you have achieved an amazing thing.

Police frustrated over 'fake' notifications to hand in firearms
Police have expressed frustration at the number of people wasting their time by submitting 'fake' notifications to hand over firearms.

Police yesterday afternoon established an 0800 number to facilitate the collection of the weapons.

By 11am this morning, they had received 474 calls. Within one single hour, police staff had dealt with 127 calls.

Another 1000 people had used an online notification form to tell police of their intentions of handing over firearms, with a significant number of these being "fake", police said.

"Unfortunately, some people have decided it is a good use of their time to misuse the form and submit 'fake' notifications to hand in weapons," a police statement said.

"While these individuals may be short of productive work to do, police are not.

"In the current environment this is unacceptable. These vexatious forms are a huge waste of Police time and resources which could be put to better use."
Why the U.S. and New Zealand's responses to mass shootings are so different
The major difference between American and New Zealand gun laws is that New Zealand’s constitution does not provide a “right to bear arms.”
Seems a bunch of overseas pranksters are jamming the systems that have been put in place to enable the hand-in, buy-back and new licensing. It’s weird that a bunch of non-NZers are trying to protect the gun rights of kiwis by making it more difficult for the locals to safely and peacefully hand in their firearms.

ty eucalyptus
very informative article

"Nicole McKee, a board member of the New Zealand gun group, said in a video statement that she can support effective changes “so that terrorist attacks cannot happen again.” But McKee said she expects her organization and pro-gun advocates “to be part of a constructive dialogue.”

McKee’s group has called on New Zealand’s House of Representatives to allow for an in-depth public consultation period on changes to the country’s firearms laws.

It is not the first time the organization, and other pro-gun groups in New Zealand, have tried to stop gun control measures.

In 1997, High Court Judge Sir Thomas Thorp suggested several amendments to New Zealand firearm laws, including a buy-back program for military-style semi-automatic weapons. The Council of Licenced Firearms Owners argued at the time that the bill would be too costly."

… wondered about "pest control" in NZ

Christchurch terror attack: I gave up a gun after the New Zealand mosque shootings. Why are Americans mad at me for it? - Opinion - The Country News

"Many farms sit next to forests where wild goats and pigs breed. . They're not an existential threat to our animals - just pests. When semiautomatic rifles of a larger calibre started becoming more widely available here, around 15 years ago, I bought one. A semiautomatic just seemed useful to have around. If I spotted a mob of goats, I could drop two or three of them before they ran away."

Got to be a better solution.

Alleged Christchurch mosque shooter makes formal complaint from prison

Alleged Christchurch mosque shooter makes formal complaint from prison

Mar 31 2019

"The man accused of the Christchurch mosque attacks has lodged a formal complaint in prison, saying he has been deprived of his basic rights. …

The source said the prisoner was "unlike anyone else we've got" but day-to-day he was compliant. …

Dr Bill Hodge, a legal expert from Auckland University, says the alleged gunman's complaint may be valid.

"The rule of law applies, even in prison... He deserves the protection of the statutes like any other prisoner."

Hodge said he will probably be a model prisoner, in some respects.

"A prisoner who insists on all of his rights probably tells me that he thinks of himself now as a victim with some point to make against society," said Hodge. "He will feel justified in being litigious."

Survivor of Christchurch shooting discharged from hospital, four still in critical condition

Survivor of Christchurch shooting discharged from hospital, four still in critical condition

Mar 30 2019

"Another survivor of the Christchurch terror attack has been discharged from hospital, however four people remain in a critical condition.

The Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) said on Saturday 21 people remained in hospital due to the March 15 attack on two Christchurch mosques, where a gunman killed 50 people and injured dozens more.

Among the wounded is 4-year-old Alen Daraghmih, who remains in a critical but stable condition in Starship Hospital in Auckland. Her father, Wasseim Alsati, 36, a barber in Christchurch who moved to New Zealand in 2014 from Jordan, is in a stable condition in Auckland Hospital.

A CDHB spokeswoman said of the 19 patients in Christchurch, 17 were still in Christchurch Hospital, three of whom remained in a critical condition in intensive care. Two patients were being treated at Burwood Hospital in Christchurch.

One person had been discharged since the last update on Friday.

Aside from Alen, the other three patients who family members say are critically injured include a man shot in a motel car park as the gunman fled the Al Noor mosque, a woman who may require a wheelchair for the rest of her life, and a Turkish man shot in the chest."
