another attack years ago:
In the Sept. 16, 1991, attack, Custis broke into the ranch-style house around noon on Moreland Drive in Delran. He rifled a jewelry box and hid in the closet when the homeowner's 34-year-old daughter came home with her 18-month-old daughter and 5-year-old niece, police said. "She entered the master bedroom; he jumped out of the closet. He took her by surprise," Delran Detective Sgt. Jeffrey Hubbs said Wednesday. Custis pushed the woman onto the bed. He punched her, choked her, and dragged her to the top of stairs leading to the basement, police said. The woman managed to grab her daughter, but Custis shoved the two down the stairs, Hubbs said. Hubbs said Custis snatched the woman's keys and drove away in her 1984 Ford station wagon. Custis, then a Cinnaminson resident, was arrested the next day around 17th and Federal Streets in Camden, where he was trying to sell the station wagon, Hubbs said. Neither the child nor the woman was seriously injured. Custis was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison for the Sept. 16, 1991, attack, according to the Burlington County Times.
