GUILTY NM - Victoria Martens, 10, brutally murdered, Albuquerque, 23 Aug 2016 *Arrests* *2 guilty*

Yes, I know that. What I am trying to determine is when the abuse started. How long did this child suffer?

I can't find anything reported on when these other guys assaulted the child. I think even if MM told police who they are, it might be hard to prosecute because the victim is dead and cant' testify, and there probably isn't physical evidence left, unless there is some other evidence.

Unless she was videotaping...

Nothing will surprise me. Infact, I bet she was sharing via Internet/cell with likeminded weirdos.

I think that will be the only way that the others will be caught. We don't even know when these crimes occurred. This monster is such trash. I can't even imagine if she was in my family.

I can't imagine. I did see that one of the attorneys was able to keep Omaree Varela's stepfather from being convicted of the most serious crime he was charged with, so I shudder to think what might happen here. I really hope there will be justice for Victoria.

BBM. Now see, this is where I have a hard time understanding the whole defense attorney mentality. I get it, they're just doing their job, but how can they in good conscious try and get lighter sentences for people that do such horrible things? Do they really want these monsters out on the streets? Are they so focused on getting a "win" or a victory that they don't think about public safety?

Maybe they can bring some kind of charges based on emails/messages about what they intended to do?

They tell themselves they're an integral part of the system. And they are supposed to be. But yeah, I wonder about the moral compasses of people who choose that particular area of law. I understand ensuring the prosecution is fair and within this law, but it gets ridiculous and horrifying sometimes.

Admittedly, I have a personal story which contributes to my feelings, as my son's father's attorney said in his sentencing for fatally injuring my baby, "well, if she would have had an abortion like he wanted..." Thank goodness the judge was as disgusted by that as I was.

WTF???? I am so, so sorry. I'll keep the charming names I have for that attorney to myself, but he obviously lost his humanity somewhere along the way (or never had it to begin with).

I am so sorry for your experience, flourish. It's hard, though, for those of us who have never needed a defense attorney to understand the how and why of what they do. However, I think if any of us are ever in the position to need a defense attorney - particularly if we or our loved one is wrongfully accused - we'd be happy they exist.

Sorry if I sound like the devil's advocate. Usually defense attorneys make me cringe, but I know a couple of good people who have benefitted.

This tragedy is just so hard to process. I can understand the comments assuming the mom was overtaken by drugs. We don't want to accept someone would do this to their child! It's disgusting and unfathomable.
Reading through the new information (I have to skim, and try not to take too much in) I'm just wondering - what's the end game here? Wth did the "mother" think would happen? Was this a phase? Did she expect her children to grow up and just accept what they'd been through? It's impossible to have an ending to something like this that isn't absolutely tragic, one way or another. That poor child.

Rest in peace, Victoria. <3

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —A New Mexico state senator is formally requesting the Attorney General commission an independent investigation into any previous allegations of abuse involving 10-year-old Victoria Martens, who police say was drugged, sexually assaulted and brutally killed in August.

Letter from Senator Padilla

Statement from Attorney General Hector Balderas

Wow, sounds like some partisan politics at play. Shame if they let that obstruct the issue at hand. Ugh, sometimes I really hate politics.

Someone just posted a name from another case here the other day saying this case reminded them of the other case (I can't remember the name now!) but I googled the case and it was apparently an entire extended family that had sex parties, including the children. They would start bringing the kids in to watch at the age of 4 or so and then would have them join in around the age of 9. The story I read made it seem like all the children raised in that family thought it was totally normal. There were several generations involved. I think it was in Alabama?

I also just yesterday stumbled across an article written by someone in the group Anonymous discussing the dark/deep web and how it's full of pedophiles. Someone had gone undercover on there to see what they could find and one they mentioned that seared into my brain was a married couple that were going to "bring their kids up pedo". Having sex with their kids was like their hobby.

The depths of human depravity amazes me and repulses and disgusts me.

I guess my point is, for these people there is no end game and sadly it apparently happens more than one might think. The internet has made it easier for these like minded individuals to get together and spread their depravity even more. :(

Really, thank God and our lucky stars and everything else that our brains and hearts basically reject this information. When I read things like that I have a constant "no, no, no" running through my head.

Having said that, ignoring that people like this do exist only adds to the problem. This is a tough one, and one that will stick with me for a long time.

I know. It's hard to think that they not only exist....they live amongst the rest of us, hiding in plain view.

Gary Mitchell spoke to KOAT Friday and said he told Martens to ask for a different judge because Judge Brett R Lovelace had once worked in the DAs office.

Lovelace was excused Friday and the case was reassigned to Second District Judicial Judge Benjamin Chavez

Mitchell also told KOAT he plans to request a change of venue in the case and will ask that each defendant be tried separately.
