NY - Female passenger died after being set on fire by man on subway - NYC - December 22, 2024

Homeless doesn't necessarily mean living on the street. The suspect himself could be described as homeless, but he was living in a shelter.
I understand. I think that there are more people who are on the margins, not necessarily homeless but not doing well or fully connected to society either. I think NYCHA should look into who does not pay rent in the next week.

The homeless shelters should be checked too. I wonder if they keep track of the residents.

“Debrina Kawam, 61, who sources said was originally from New Jersey — was sleeping on an F train at the Stillwell Avenue-Coney Island station in Brooklyn around 7:30 a.m. Dec. 22 when she was set on fire. Illegal Guatemalan immigrant Sebastian Zapeta-Calil is facing first-degree murder charges in the sick attack.”

Sleep well, Debrina. I'm sorry that such a cruel act ended your time with us here on earth.

So they were able to identify her through fingerprints.

Now she can have a proper burial and those who knew her can pay their respects. So glad to see this.

I’m not on Facebook so I can’t delve any further, but this may be her.

Uncommon name, from Jersey, the dates seem to align with her age.

Went to college and had a career.

Why she was on the train terminus in Brooklyn—-she could have been going anywhere in NYC. Stillwell Ave. is the last stop on the F train but also the first stop.

May or may not have been homeless.

Cheers to those who worked so hard to identify her.

R.I.P.

Well, if she was an alcoholic, that kind of addiction doesn't discriminate, and there are probably just as many working class folks who dropped out at sixteen as people with BAs at AA meetings.

Rough sleepers all came from somewhere, they all have a past. We're all one disaster away from the streets. That isn't a comfortable thing, but it's the truth.

What led you to this conclusion?
Per the census there was only 1 family with the last name Kawam living in the US as of the 1950 census. That family lives in New Jersey. Unless there are two Debbies in one family, I am logically assuming Debbie Kawam, ~18 in 1985 and ~55 today, is Debrina Kawam.

Fair assumption, if the name is that uncommon and the family is from that close. It kind of could only be her, barring a recent immigration.

No, I know how to research genealogy. Thank you. What happened is; I was on page 14 and went to type a message when a picture popped up … which is why I asked. For some reason, it had skipped page 15 and the rapid messages which led up to the picture on page 16.

The problem isn't you, you just hadn't refreshed, and we all have nothing else better to do on New Year's so we're posting. :) It happens. We've all been that person replying to something after the fact. The joys of social media!

I believe this is her from a Passaic, NJ high school yearbook from 1985.
IF this is the terribly unfortunate & innocent soul who lost her life due to this evil doer, I am so sad, but also smiling, reading her high school year book message. She sounds so fun, happy, full of life with lots of friends. IF this is her, i am glad she knew joy in her life and surely she shared joy and love with those around her. Tragic case. May justice be swift and appropriate. MOO

It is good to know that the victim has apparently now been identified. :( And just before the year’s end. Such an unforgivable act by the suspect. But I prefer to concentrate on the dear victim at this point.

And good sleuthing here that many have done. Wonder if there is any indication whether she might have been married which may relate to a possible name change? MOO

From the stills at this link, it looked like the victim stood there or walked forward a few steps.
Surprised she didn't do the whole 'drop & roll' motions to try to extinguish the flames.
Maybe in shock and too much pain to do anything ?
Eta : Sorry did not mean to imply the victim should have done that.
I didn't know about the mobility issues, and tbh -- that makes the reaction understandable now, and so much more terrifying.

I am always on the victim's side.

What a horrifying and gruesome death.

Hope they throw the book at the perp.
Imo.

Rest in gentle peace, Debrina !!
I am so sorry you met this fate.

She had mobility issues and used a walker. She likely couldn't physically drop and roll.
