NY - Female passenger died after being set on fire by man on subway - NYC - December 22, 2024

MOO: I believe this parked subway train was acting as a de facto homeless shelter for the severely mentally ill. Not uncommon. Get on the 7 out near JFK and you’ll see this 365 nights of the year post-COVID. MOO: it amazes me how severe this has to get before a reckoning happens, but in some ways this reminds me of Times Square in the 1990s. It had to get truly terrifying for everyone who stepped foot in it before we mustered the will as a society to get behind turning it around.
Times Square wasn’t that great in the late sixties and early seventies either . I lived on 44th street then.

If only there was a nearby citizen who could have restrained the killer before he set the victim on fire.

JMO.

Yes, it would have been a good thing if there had been someone that could have SAFELY restrained him beforehand.

Where did you see that? In the video I saw, he was just sitting on a bench. Also, waving a hoodie at her from a few meters away is not going to put the fire out. He could have been pretending being a good Samaritan, I suppose.
It's on x. I'm not sure I am allowed to post the link?

Chilling footage showed the moment a man in a hoodie sat on the platform at Stillwell Avenue in Coney Island and watched as the woman became engulfed by flames.

As some suspected, this article says "Train surveillance cameras caught the man setting fire to the homeless woman and then watching as she suffered in agony ". Some videoed after police were involved, but I don't think anyone else was on the train when he lit her on fire.

He was truly evil to watch her burn. I hope she didn't suffer long. I have not and could not watch a video of her burning alive, but I truly hope she didn't.

That someone would have to be a mind reader since there would be no way of knowing he was going to light the woman on fire.

I saw it. Waving a piece of clothing (or something) at the victim from a distance. I don't know if it was his idea of pretending to put out the fire, but it was only going to fan the flames.

Shocked to learn that victim used a frame for walking. Very upsetting that person could be that twisted & wicked.
Horrified at the money wasted on this creep, and future funds to be flushed down toilet in defending & incarcerating.

Who is the victim? Surely, she suffered. What an awful way to die. Moo.

Thank you! From your link...

"Federal officials said they will file a request for Zapeta-Calil to be turned over to ICE after the criminal case against him is over. That immigration detainer could allow for him to be deported."

Certainly, he'll be charged with murder and locked up now, right? Someone who can light another human being on fire should never see the light of day again. And, he already entered illegally after being deported
I don't think he is going to find it as easy if he decides to enter the country again if he is deported now.

As far as I can tell he won't be deported before serving his time if convicted.
He should never get out of prison.

It is so sad that no one tried to help her.
Yes, it is, but the Penny trial is fresh on everyones mind. I think that was the turning point for getting involved or walking away. JMO

I'm sure that people are now thinking twice about getting involved.

There are many older migrant men, 20+ years old, in high school these days.
Women, too. They may be learning English or studying for their GED.

Respectfully I would hope that someone that could have would not hesitate to help someone in this nightmarish situation because of the Penny trial. That was a completely different situation, and Neely never actually touched or even spoke to anyone directly - yes, people were scared though.
I absolutely will not stop to help anyone, due to the possibility of being charged with manslaughter. People judge and find guilt with anyone who attempts to keep another person safe. Why bother? just turn you head and walk on by. JMO

They do take those classes, but they are not “in high school.”

I’ve proctored exams for adult ESL classes. They are typically taught in high school buildings, but in the evening, long after the kids have left and also so those who are working can have this opportunity.

On rare occasions you may have a 20 year old still in high school, but they are aged out at 21. At least this is true in NY.

Furthermore, no student is allowed in schools without proof of required childhood vaccinations, which most immigrants don’t have.

We have had to send letters to parents throughout my career, telling them that they cannot send their kids back to school until they have all the vaccinations completed. Again, I only know the standards for my state.

There is NO WAY that a 33-year old is in classes with high school aged children.

Jay St. station is about 45 minutes away from Stillwell Ave. by train. My guess is the high school girls got alerts on their phones and that is how they realized that they saw the suspect.

JMO and JME.
