NY - Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein confidante, arrested on Sex Abuse charges, Jul 2020 #5

This seems to contradict my previous post.
______

Judge finds Maxwell's 'criminal activity to be extensive' - and could still ignore sentencing guidelines
While the sentencing guidelines do point to a sentence of less than 20 years for Ghislaine Maxwell, the judge still has it in her power to sentence outside of this range - higher or lower.

In the course of considering the sentencing guideline range, Judge Nathan she did find that Maxwell was engaged in a pattern of activity and oversaw the activities of Sarah Kellen, an Epstein assistant who has never been charged but whom victims alleged engaged in finding girls for Epstein and took part in sexual abuse.

"I do find the defendant's criminal activity to be extensive," Judge Nathan said.

What’s everyone’s wager on sentence length?

I’m wagering 20. I would love more, but don’t believe that will happen, and I would be satisfied with 20.

The problem with victim statements, IMO, is that judges pretty much seem to have made up their mind by sentencing date. Then, the victim statements seem to be voices in the wilderness.
No offense to you but you were not a target (victim) of Epstein and Maxwell. I am not satisfied with 20 years unless it's spent in solitary confinement.

The voices of their victims are NOT lost in the wilderness.

Victim impact statements aren't meant to influence the judge or the outcome in any way. Those who are going through the court process are typically informed of this beforehand. Impact statements are just that. Statements given by survivors to illustrate the impact that a crime has had on their lives.

There are many people who choose not to submit a statement. There are many who choose not to come forward.

Maxwell should have her accounts seized. Her money came from exploitation and trafficking. She's a piece of garbage.

Agreed completely that she's a piece of garbage. I hope she receives the max sentence.

Not only do I hope that she receives the max I hope that she is left destitute and everything she owns or is to inherit is seized.

Ghislaine Maxwell unemotional during sentencing, avoids looking at victim during reading of impact statements.

Maxwell has remained unemotional during the sentencing today. Now she is avoiding looking at the victim during reading of impact statements.

GM's statements to the court, and she STILL refuses to own her part in this. UGH this woman is just vile.

No shame.
_____

Maxwell addresses the court
For the first time beyond very brief statements such as confirming her name, the court is now hearing from Ghislaine Maxwell.

She says she "empathised deeply with all the victims in this case".

She says her association with Epstein "will permanently stain me" and that it "is the biggest regret of my life than I ever met him".

"I believe Jeffrey Epstein fooled all of those in his orbit," she says.

"His victims considered him a mentor, friend, lover. Jeffrey Epstein should have stood before you. In 2005. In 2009. And again in 2019. But today it is for me to be sentenced."

"I'm sorry for the pain that you have experienced," she adds.

"I hope my conviction brings closure. I hope it brings peace and finality.

"I also acknowledge the pain this case has brought to those that l love.

"It is my sincerest wish to all those in this courtroom that this day brings a terrible chapter to an end.

"May this day help you travel from the darkness into the light."

Judge to deliver sentence shortly
Judge Alison Nathan says the sentencing guideline is 188 to 235 months, but that that is "only one factor" to be considered.

"Maxwell is not being punished as a proxy of Epstein, but rather for her role in the criminal conduct," she says.

"She participated in some of the abuse. Her conduct was heinous and predatory."

Maxwell "normalised" the abuse committed by Epstein, she says.

I thought the Judge had the statements given to her in advance, no?
Just before sentencing, in my experience. By that I mean, not in advance.

Snipped for focus.

Thanks. This clarifies for me.

The damage done to these young girls was incalculable,' Nathan says.

'The conduct 'demands a substantial sentence'

'A substantial sentence will send an unmistakable message that those who engage in the sexual abuse and trafficking of underage victims will be held accountable by the law.'

'The rule of law demands, and this court agrees, that whether you are rich or powerful or entirely unknown, nobody is above the law.'

She [Judge Nathan] says a "substantial sentence" will send an "unmistakable message" to those who commit sexual abuse and engage in the trafficking of underage victims.

Judge Nathan says a "significant" sentence is necessary.

Judge Nathan: The sentencing submissions did not express remorse or accept responsibility. Ms. Maxwell is entitled to exercise her right to go to trial. But I will take into account her lack of remorse. I conclude that a sentence of 240 months is right.

She is also fined $750,000.

Maxwell sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Couldn't have happened to a more deserving scum bag.

At last!!!!!!

At last this sordid, disgusting saga has come to an end (I hope).

I also hope that the victims will find some sort of solace at last.
