Plus indicted (9/4/18) & arraigned (9/5/18) with aggravated murder, 3 counts of tampering with evidence, menacing by stalking, petty theft, abuse of a corpse & gross abuse of a corpse. Plead not guilty. $2M bond was upped to $4M (9/5/18).
Admitted to strangulating Ellen.
9/4/18: indicted. 9/5: Arraignment: No plea given for the 1st degree murder charge yet. Judge ups bond to $4M & entered a plea of not guilty. Next hearing 10/3 for plea or trial setting hearing. 10/3/18: Postponed to 10/31.
10/31/18 Update: Defense asks for continuance, Judge schedules 12/12 for Plea/Trial Setting hearing. Prosecutor Michael Gmoser said the prosecution's witness list includes 54 law enforcement officers, 24 lay persons & 20 people from various companies who are keepers of the records in devices such as cell phones.
12/12/18 Update: Next Motions hearing on 2/6, Suppression hearing on 2/27. Jury trial date set for 4/1/19.

Man accused of killing West Chester woman wants funds to pay for review of devices


BUTLER COUNTY —
Attorneys for a Liberty Twp. man charged in the death of a woman who was found dead in a Millikin Road field were in court Wednesday requesting an expert to review data taken from multiple devises and the release of the victim’s medical records.

Strouse was in Butler County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday for a hearing to consider several motions filed by his attorneys Kyle Rapier and Jeff Bowling. Another hearing on a motion to suppress evidence is scheduled for later this month. (2/27)

The defense team requested the judge approve funds to hire a forensic expert and allow them to view the “cell phones, computers, digital recorders, cameras, hard drives, flash drives and memory cards” gathered as evidence.

Bowling said Strouse’s family was able to retain his representation but Strouse is indigent and has no funds of his own for an expert assistance.

Assistant Prosecutor Josh Muennich said Strouse is not entitled to a “blank check.” "The defendant has secured private counsel and is essentially asking the citizens of Butler County to pay for his expert to mount his defense … he must prove that expert provides a particularized need,” Muennich said.
Howard took the matter under advisement, saying he did not see a particular need at this point for a defense expert because not all discovery has been turned over or reviewed by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

2/6/19 Update: Motions: Defense requesting an expert to review data taken from multiple devises and the release of the victim’s medical records. Judge Howard took the matter under advisement, saying he did not see a particular need at this point for a defense expert because not all discovery has been turned over or reviewed by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Howard ruled the state would get the physiological records and turn them over to the defense but declined to do the same for the medical record because an autopsy report was already in hand.

A plea hearing may happen today in Butler County Common Pleas Court for a Liberty Twp. man charged with the death of a 23-year-old woman who was found dead in a Millikin Road field, according to Butler County Prosecutor Michael Gmoser.

Michael Strouse had two black eyes when he entered a Butler County courtroom Wednesday afternoon, where he received the maximum sentence for stalking and murdering West Chester woman Ellie Weik.
Strouse was sentenced to life in prison with the eligibility for parole after 17.5 years. He received 15 to life for murder, 18 months for menacing by stalking and one year for gross abuse of a corpse. The sentences will run consecutive.

A judge sentenced Michael Strouse, 30, to the maximum term allowable: 17 and a half years to life.

Michael Strouse, the man sentenced today for the murder of West Chester’s Ellie Weik, came to court with two black eyes after a jail altercation.

Strouse’s family said Michael was “jumped and beaten” by an inmate at the Butler County Jail last weekend, which caused the black eyes. He was talking to them on video during visitation when it happened, they said.
BCSO Major Mike Craft confirmed there was an altercation, but said Strouse refused to prosecute. The inmate was disciplined internally.

A fellow inmate claims that he murdered someone named "Shelley" before and he also tried to abduct a nearby jogger.

I know of this guy and he traveled all over the country. Is there a Shelley missing or murder not solved?

He would have been considered high-profile in his jail prior to sentencing so he would have been kept in the pod that is protected. Yet, he was jumped by an inmate while he was on a video phone with his parents. He appeared in court a few days later with 2 black eyes but wouldn't file a complaint.
