Or the fact that they were loose and not paying attention meant they were used to people coming and going and were not all that vicious. I have a Red Nose Pit, male, and a White German Sheppard, female, and they completely guard my house. They take a while to calm down when introducing them to new people. Several hours to get warmed up enough to be completely comfortable but once they know someone they will protect them too and let those people come and go as they please. My dogs are rescues and they were both unsocialised. They would Never allow people they didn't know anywhere near my house or in my fenced in yard they didn't know let alone wander around the property with all that going on. It just doesn't seem to me these dogs have that type of disposition. They seem like they are used to people coming and going along with a lot of automobile movement. I also think that if they were behaving so completely out of character the family present would see that right away and find it very strange.

I think that very well could be it. I have a beware of dog sign on my fence post as you pull into our drive. I've got two rescues and two non-rescues. All four are socialized, but, I take no chances and never tell anyone that my dogs won't bite. You never know when a dog will take a dislike to someone, or have a bad hair day, just like humans.
