OH - Samuel Dubose, 43, killed by Cincinnati LE during traffic stop, 19 July 2015

Imo when white people understand and express the idea "He was one of us" or "It could have happened to me" we can take race out of the discussion, and it shouldn't be, imo, up to black people to help them figure it out.

IMO, we're never going to get all the people of any one race to understand and agree on any one thing, especially if the implication of that thing is that their race, and therefore they personally, are somehow guilty of this kind of terrible violence against others.

But I think all that really needs to be done is for enough persistent, passionate people of whatever race to dedicate time to helping change people's attitudes and perceptions so that it becomes socially unacceptable for tragedies like this to happen and people can work towards solutions.

I believe and hope that the prosecution of the shooter of Samuel Dubose is a turning point in our history and that we can move on to making some sort of changes that will benefit future generations of all people in the US, including police officers.

I think that there are possibly too many psychologically damaged individuals becoming police officers and that a higher standard for hiring might be in order, but I haven't looked into the specifics.

I don't know, I'm just having trouble understanding how this can continue to happen over and over and over again. Sleeping babies, children playing outside, young men with Downs Syndrome, homeless men with schizophrenia, the elderly bedridden, young women, Samuel Dubose -- is no one safe? Yes, I'm clutching my pearls over here!

Lots to chew on in this very interesting article by Nick Swartsell in Vice.

For example:

“I think he just lost his temper," Deters said of Tensing's actions on the video. The prosecutor has suggested UC's police department be disbanded and patrol of the school handed over to the city's police.

The words are shocking coming from a prosecutor, especially one with as conservative a reputation as Deters. Just weeks before, he faced major controversy for calling a group of African Americans facing charges from his office "soulless" and "irredeemable.""

Bingo.

IMO we need to accept what's happening and how we are implicit in it and how we benefit from it, but that doesn't mean we have to personally feel guilty. I wish, I really, really, wish white people could figure this out and be open to change without getting defensive and shutting down conversation and progress. IMO we need to see the world as it is and then try to move forward. I don't think our feelings being hurt isn't enough of an excuse. You said "persistent, passionate people of whatever race to dedicate time to helping change people's attitudes and perceptions" but why do we expect black people to do anything other than try to survive? This is on us, no matter how uncomfortable it is.

I agree with everything you've said, I do, but I don't think it's possible to discuss and address police brutality without admitting how in the end many black people are abused, jailed, and murdered, and many white people can walk away like nothing happened.

Thanks. By "initiate" do they mean RT's lights were flashing to stop SD for some distance? JMO

That was where he punched the guy's license plate number into his computer, and began to follow him. It appears his lights were flashing.

The reality of the situation was the officer was correct, he did have quite a lot of drugs in his car as well as driving while suspended.

Source?

Was Samuel a student there, do we know? I didn't catch that earlier that he was on campus when everything started.

I haven't seen anything that said he was a student. If I was going to take a wild 🤬🤬🤬 guess, I'd guess he was probably just driving by the campus.

From CNN

DuBose: "No, I'm not suspended." (In fact, DuBose was driving on a suspended license, according to records with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.)
http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/29/us/video-sam-dubose-ray-tensing-chronology/

And not the first time he drove with a suspended licence
According to court records, police pulled Dubose over and charged him with not having a license 13 times between 1995 and 2009. He was charged four times with not having a proper license plate on his vehicle between those dates. He was also charged with driving under suspension eight times between 2005 and 2011.

What difference does it make if he was driving with a suspended license? How does Samuel's suspended license support the murderer's case?

Cops have a very dangerous job and I support and appreciate them putting their life on the line every day for us. The vast majority of them do a terrific job protecting us. A small percent of them are making the rest look bad.
With that said, I don’t think that as a society that we can allow the police to shoot somebody as a first option then say, I felt threatened as an excuse. I’m sure they feel threatened dozens of times a day, but that’s no reason to shoot first and ask questions later. They have a huge responsibility and need to be held to a high standard.
One last thing, anything that the police find after the shooting can’t be used as justification for the shooting. If they kick down your front door without a search warrant and then find drugs that don’t make it ok.

"Dubose had been charged with more than 55 offenses before his death. Some of the other charges escalated beyond traffic violations, including drug abuse, domestic violence and assault. It is important to note that being charged with a crime does not mean that someone is guilty. In many cases, court documents show Dubose paid his fines. The two assault charges were dismissed."

CNN - Hamilton County Coroner's Office reports there was NO ALCOHOL IN THE GIN BOTTLE!

Contents were consistent with 'Air Freshener'.

Glad those that posted the bottle contained Gin (even though it was the wrong color to be Gin and had not yet been tested) are not cops - there are enough problems with LE without that added problem.

In light of this, the pot and cash statements are likely be bs as well.

Pot and cash statement are not bs. It was confirmed by the prosecutor.
"He said DuBose had marijuana in the car and about $2,600 cash. "He might have had marijuana, but you don't deserve to be executed for something like that," Deters said."

Two pounds of pot is bs for now - imo. Unfortunately many people have pot now a days - some fool(s) legalized it. What did they think would happen by legalizing pot - people would mail it or walk to their friends house(s) with it?

Guess that excuse/logic means many will be shot in their vehicles in the near future. Should people get use to that?

  • #256
Pot has not been legalized everywere. I guess it is not legal in Ohio, but I don't know.

As jjenny has linked to a number of times, Deters himself annouced that there was marijuana in the car Sam was driving. What hasn't been officially announced is the quantity of marijuana.

Apparently a prominent Fox TV anchor in Cincinnati felt it good journalism to pass along a rumor that it amounted to two pounds (or more?).

Mr Dubose could have had a trunk full of pot - doesn't matter, he wasn't pulled over on suspicion of having pot. Any knowledge of pot came after an unjustified and illegal shooting. Pretty sure it's a moot point and will not play much of a part, if any, at Tensing's trial.

Agree. But ya gotta admit, it really is kind of risky to keep air freshener (smell good, thanks to a WS poster) in a gin bottle! LOL JMO

Just to follow up after the CNN report, here is another source:

Coroner's office identifies contents in Sam DuBose's gin bottle

“The Hamilton County Coroner's Office said the liquid in the gin bottle was consistent with compounds commonly found in fragrance products, such as air freshener and perfumes.

According to the tests results, the substance submitted to the laboratory was negative for ethyl alcohol.

Authorities said testing will continue on the substance and other items of evidence as the investigation continues.”

Agree - I think it's an incredibly stupid idea as much as toy guns are stupid to me. Asking for trouble imo.
