Imo when white people understand and express the idea "He was one of us" or "It could have happened to me" we can take race out of the discussion, and it shouldn't be, imo, up to black people to help them figure it out.
IMO, we're never going to get all the people of any one race to understand and agree on any one thing, especially if the implication of that thing is that their race, and therefore they personally, are somehow guilty of this kind of terrible violence against others.
But I think all that really needs to be done is for enough persistent, passionate people of whatever race to dedicate time to helping change people's attitudes and perceptions so that it becomes socially unacceptable for tragedies like this to happen and people can work towards solutions.
I believe and hope that the prosecution of the shooter of Samuel Dubose is a turning point in our history and that we can move on to making some sort of changes that will benefit future generations of all people in the US, including police officers.
I think that there are possibly too many psychologically damaged individuals becoming police officers and that a higher standard for hiring might be in order, but I haven't looked into the specifics.
I don't know, I'm just having trouble understanding how this can continue to happen over and over and over again. Sleeping babies, children playing outside, young men with Downs Syndrome, homeless men with schizophrenia, the elderly bedridden, young women, Samuel Dubose -- is no one safe? Yes, I'm clutching my pearls over here!
