The highly intelligent Lola seems to have suffered from a bad case of Imposter's Syndrome. She didn't feel like she was good at her job when in fact, the school principal was very satisfied with her performance. Her landlady said she was so anxious, she began taking nerve pills. I don't know if that is true, as from research, the first nerve pill didn't hit the market until 1955, called Milltown. She wanted to be an interpreter, since she knew 5 languages, but either couldn't find a position in that field or wanted to get her graduate degree first. Perhaps she felt she could do better in her home country of Italy and just left, afraid her family would talk her out of it or disapprove if she told them. I didn't know until now that she was 9 years old when her family came to America, so perhaps memories of a happier childhood there pulled her back to her roots. MOO.
