GUILTY OK - Christopher Lane, 22, Australian, slain in thrill killing, Duncan, 16 Aug 2013

In this video (and a lot of other articles) it says the 17 yo broke down in court and said "he did NOT pull the trigger," though. Since they charged the other as the shooter, I'm guessing this report is the accurate version. jmo

Thank you for the clarification. Yesterday, it was being misreported that MJ said he pulled the trigger. I'm quite unhappy about the misinformation the MSM has already spread about this case and I hope they get their act together fast. Such bad reporting does a disservice to the victim and his family.

I am very unhappy too. For media to claim that the suspect confessed to being the trigger man when it appears to be the opposite is beyond the pale.

I've seen equally bad reporting in so many cases at this stage I just don't take anything they say at face value any more. This forum is often a more accurate source of information than international news organisations like CNN, Sky, etc. The BBC is usually reliable enough, but I don't trust the rest.

Sounds like he got this youthful offender status by being the one who spilled the beans.
Because, frankly, what he is alleged to have done doesn't sound like an "accessory after the fact" to me. Accessory after the fact would be picking the two up after the crime. Being there during the crime is not "after the fact."

ITA. MJ was involved from the start. I'm beginning to think that the lesser charges may be because MJ has been the one to talk and offer up testimony/evidence and also it seems he is showing remorse.

J****, who faces up to 45 years in jail, burst into tears when told he was looking at a "very, very lengthy prison sentence".

"I didn't pull the trigger," J**** said.

The youngest teen JE was laughing and dancing as he was booked. Unbelievable!

The lack of emotion from Edwards allegedly was in contrast to last Friday night when the trio was arrested and were being booked into the Stephens County jail.

Edwards did a dance and was laughing, Mr Hicks said, and the incident was captured by a security camera.

After the complete misrepresentation of JE's facebook post about Bang 2, I'm going to need to see that security camera video before I believe it.

Random killing of Australian ballplayer prompts threats, boycotts

By Christopher Nelson and Henry Austin, NBC News

Anonymous threats against a local high school and calls for a travel boycott by Australians to the United States came Tuesday after three Oklahoma teens were charged in the random shooting of a college baseball player jogging down a tree-lined street.

Christopher Lane, 22, a native of Melbourne, Australia and a rising senior at East Central University, was gunned down Friday in Duncan, Okla. Police said one of the teens charged in the case said the boys "were bored and didn’t have anything to do, so we decided to kill somebody."

The shooting has dominated news reports in Australia and led Australian deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer to call on Australian tourists to boycott the U.S.

Oh dear, oh dear. That article got the deputy PM wrong! The current deputy is Anthony Albanese. I Googled Tim Fischer and he was deputy in the late 90's.

Seems that news article left out the former bit.

The State Department's comments came after former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer urged Australian tourists to stay away from America to protest the need for stricter gun controls in the US.

Oh dear. Has the media ever done as bad a job in reporting any other serious crime? So far we've had the following clangers...

1) Three juveniles are facing the death penalty.

2) All three defendants are black

3) A facebook about music reported as gloating about the murder

4) A defendant reported as confessing in open court when he actually denied it in open court.

5) A former deputy PM reported as a current deputy PM.

6) At least one news report still thinks the defendants can be sentenced to LWOP

These people get paid good salaries for reporting these clangers, while we all post here for free - and we do a better job of getting it right!

They would make good weather men.

17 year old charged as juvenile and only an accessory, yet he claimed in court he was the one who pulled a trigger. It's not making sense to me why he isn't charged like the other 2.

"Though the 17-year-old suspect was not charged with murder, he claimed in open court Monday that "he pulled the trigger." The judge ordered him to remain quiet."

I don't see the statement about claiming he did it in the article. Was it taken out? Another article states the 17 year old admitted "They killed hi for fun".

There was surveillance video of the crime, perhaps the police KNOW he was not the shooter but the driver as maybe they can see the shooter was in the back seat or something.

This appears to be a crime committed by minors. Here is the rule on minors. Please edit your posts if necessary.

If the minor has not yet been named by LE or we still don't know if the perps will be tried as adults, please change their names to initials.

MINORS

Websleuths does not allow the naming of, or photographs of, minors (children under the age of 18) unless the child is a missing or deceased person or where law enforcement has identified the minor as a perpetrator of a crime and the minor will be tried as an adult.

Thanks,

Salem

Hey Salem, Is it ok to say their names now?

"All were charged as adults, according to the Stephens County District Attorney’s Office"

I quoted it directly from the article. So if it's not there, then clearly it was edited out. Likely because they got what he said completely wrong.

I believe it is okay. LE released their names and it's difficult to hide their names when they are right there in MSN links. Initials are faster to type but if you slip up with the full name I don't think there will be an issue.

Thanks for asking. :seeya:

Yes. The reporting has been atrocious.

I didn't read the other thread because it seemed so upsetting. I'm not defending the accused but am always suspect of confessions or reasons that 15 year old gives for committing crimes or when they all end up charged. No reason would be acceptable though, but boredom seems a little farfetched imo, since they had a gun and a vehicle.

Thanks LambChop. According to this, though, he's listed as a Youthful Offender. So does it mean bc he's being tried in an adult court that he's charged as an adult? Media is all over the place on this case. I've lost respect for the whole lot of 'em!

They did get it wrong. I'm so sick of this.

They edited it when they realized their mistake. When the judge said he faces up to 45 years in jail, Jones cried out that he wasn't the shooter. The judge said this isn't the time to sort out all the details.

Not verbatim but in so many words to that effect.
