but I have told mine to go right ahead and enjoy the state as your parent, and foster care or a group home as your residence. Not one has made that call.
Right. You have to be prepared to tell your child that the consequence to you be damned. If they truly feel like they'll be better off in the hands of the State, then you're willing to accept their choice. I have done that and, to LE's credit, have been completely supported by them. They inform the children of the actually very limited legal obligations of their parents wrt food and shelter, and also wrt legal physical discipline v. illegal. In my experience, though, not many parents are willing to take that stand when the outcome is very uncertain for themselves, personally. Not to mention the strong PC bias against it. jmo
