Might he have thought in some weird way he could be thought of as being abducted, like someone else killed the children and abducted him?
I think it's possible,
If he thought he could pull that off thats what matters not whether we think it's rational or not. The guy is off his rocker so anything is possible.

I asked around a little and so far, no-one has mentioned such a method when trying to list possibilities.

Considering he is a veteran who served in Afganistan, then could this particular method be something he witnessed there? Say, is it possible that someone (his army mates, Taliban fighters, local troops, anyone) used this method on local kids? As most war crimes go unreported, it is unlikely we'll get a full picture, but I'm thinking more generally, that is this method "a thing" at that time and place where he served? I found some hints that it might be, but nothing of the degree I was expecting for "confirmation" that it might be. (I'm saying nothing about intent here, if this is a method he "picked up" in Afganistan, he could have used it in either "sane" mind or not).

So googling around I did find this article:
On November 24, an interpreter working with German troops was killed in Kunduz province, in northern Afghanistan. His body was found inside a vehicle with a plastic bag over his head and his hands tied behind his back with wire.

And this one:
Al-Ani was captured by Joint Special Operations Command troops in July 2003. He told investigators that during his capture, he was forced to lie on his stomach in the back of a vehicle with his hands bound and head covered in a plastic bag. According to a letter al-Ani wrote, his captor “put his foot on my back and started screaming and cursing me in English, which I do understand.

And this one:
After the Afghan children arrived at Samaritas, Grand Rapids police responded nearly every other day to calls for incidents like missing persons, suicide threats, fights and assaults. The police reports were unavailable, but internal shelter records document many of those incidents. One boy put a rope around his neck, “acting like he wanted to hang himself.” Another day, a boy tried to suffocate another child with a plastic bag. A few days later, a worker found a boy scratching his forearm. He told her that “when his body is in pain, it prevents his head from thinking about his problems.”
Good thoughts on that, you could be onto something. This could be related to his military PTSD if he witnessed or was part of anything like that by association with his fellow soldiers.

The only other reason I could think of why he chose such a heinous thing to do to his daughters is because he was too chicken to use his bare hands. He couldn't access firearms, but also couldn't go through with it himself so to speak.

It's like a 'hands off' murder, where he might've done it then walked away to not watch and came back after some time passed. Ugh awful thought, but it almost made it "impersonal" :(

They’re putting signs up at parks. Saw this while hiking in Granite Falls, WA.

Hi. Does anyone know where he is from or former employers? I know it's very early & mush is unfolding.

I thought he had earpods in and was moving to the beat, probably some rock/heavy metal he had playing on his phone. He seemed amped up to me but Whitney says he was quieter than usual so ??. Its hard to tell, in some videos it looks like he has them in and some not.The sweep of the door was definitely weird, no Idea what that was.
I thought the same. No one has mentioned any suspected drug use, but I’m pondering that possibility.

But this video did not happen on the day he picked up the girls. I need to find the source I read that on to state the exact date. Anyone else have a link handy?

“Security video from the days leading up to”.

“Security video from the days leading up to”.
In his state of mind how long can he last out there? Isolation alone would be brutal.

What in the world was he doing on this Ring camera in the first few seconds? Breathing? Counting? And then the odd duck like he was picking something up, but came up empty handed. It's more like a dance move in front of a camera to me. I just found it very odd.

It seemed to me like he either had a song in his head, was listening to music in an earbud, or maybe even responding to internal stimuli. I've wondered if he had a psychotic break, and if so, whether it was drug-induced or not. Meth is a helluva drug.

As far as the other odd movements, I saw a couple comments elsewhere from fellow service members, saying that it looked like he was "sweeping the doorway", which is a safety tactic taught in the military. If that is what he was doing, it kinda shows you where his head was at; nowhere good.

I think so too. He may even see himself as a Jon Rambo character, a highly skilled military soldier with shellshock being unfairly harassed by hostile official entities and he wants to disappear into the forest to live alone.

When his ex said he’s lived off grid for a few months at a time before, I wonder where and what time of the year and what his setup was. Whether you’re on the maritime side or the continental side, northwest winters in the wilderness are no joke, and a guy with just a backpack’s worth of stuff, even with caches, won’t last long without being able to run to the store or have someone deliver stuff to him. He has limited money, I’d imagine his accounts will be frozen, and some shops are now cashless and of course have surveillance cameras.

Unless caught or leaves the wilderness, he’s going to end up like Chris McCandless (Into The Wild), the man who ran to Alaska, underestimated the environment and overestimated his own ability, and died.
Completely missed the part about him living off grid previously for a few months at a time! This is definitely important

This link has a wider view than I saw previously. As he is straighting back up, he is running his hand along the door frame? Starts at 1:54.

I don’t know what his plan is but they have released that Travis is a Pewaukee native.

Pewaukee is in Wisconsin, originally home to two tribal communities, the Potawatomi and the Menominee ones.

Is there any possibility that Travis could be a Native? Then trying to get to the area by foot takes 28 days. But to get to the area where he may still have relatives and potentially, rely on minimal support is not a bad idea. I might be wrong because I assume he is thinking logically (and chance is, he is not thinking at all) but it is not impossible. After all, maybe he started taking meds again, who knows?

Powatomi is larger and more widespread tribe. Menominee is a federally recognized tribe and has a reservation. I don’t believe that any tribe will be exalted to host him, not for a second, but if he had prior tribal connections he might hope to rekindle them. Obviously, he won’t get to VA, he cut contacts with the pastor; so the community is where people might turn to.

Just thinking of the logic of his route traveling. I think he is alive and it is not impossible that he remembers only “bits and pieces” of what has happened.

To understand more about how and why this occurred in this manner, you'd have to research the subject of family annihilation. Also, though uncomfortable to discuss, the asphyxiation by plastic bag (with self-sedation) was often recommended by the right-to-die movement as a "painless" method. Anyone who remembers the Christmas Tree lady case might have read about that. I don't want to go into it too much, but it's possible he thought in his insanity that it was humane--which OF COURSE it's obviously not in any way if it's murder. However, in cases of family annihilation, the murderers often see their family members as personal possessions that are merely extensions of themselves.

The former military member also has “extensive tactical training,” according to the US Marshals, which is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to Decker’s arrest.

“His boss told him or told me that he had talked to Travis on Friday and he seemed like he was on the brink of something really extreme,” according to the petition.

Around a month before the murders, the accused killer abruptly ended his daily counseling calls he had been holding with a Georgia pastor — some of which included conversations which lasted several hours, the documents reveal.
[snip]
All the while, Decker apparently made attempts to reconcile relationships with his brother and father, and attempted to rekindle his romance with Whitney.
Travis Decker was on ‘brink of something really extreme’ before daughters were killed: court docs

I don't think I had read previously that he was estranged from his family. Sounds like in the weeks before, he was unravelling quickly.

In almost every case, the familicide is premeditated and the perpetrator views his family members as property, such that he maintains the right to end their lives (Scheinin, Rogers, & Sathyavagiswaran, 2011, p. 327). Regardless of motive or history, this typically stems from the belief that they are solely responsible for their family’s needs (Marzuk, 1992, p. 3181). Perpetrators need to maintain their masculinity, which is tied to the family unit, as well as control and power over their family members. When these factors are threatened, they act out against the family violently and fatally (Yardley, Wilson, & Lynes, 2014, p. 131). When fearing abandonment, offenders adopt a Medea complex (‘if I cannot have them, no-one can’), exemplified through the murders (Liem & Koenraadt, 2008, p. 315). Studies of these cases provide insight into how the psychological processes of marital conflict and parent-child conflict interact (Wilson et al., 1995, p. 278).
