That he was prepared to hike deep into the wilderness directly and with plans he practiced/was in shape for to travel X miles per hour for X hours per day to his previously setup hideouts, and away from civilization for good

That he had set up places to shelter along his route that were out of range of all technological searching devices,

I hope I'm wrong, and/or I hope he will slip up and/or eventually become complacent and get caught, but my gut is telling me he has the knowledge and skillset to live off the grid indefinitely
.
I agree that he is going to have formidable skills, but I have a different conclusion.

In the end, the number of people who have the off grid skills to winter hunter gatherer style in northern wilderness areas is very small. Not even Ranger school graduates would have this skill set. Statistically, I don't think he is one of these people.

I also agree about his ability to evade infra red or technology based searches. But... the USBP trackers (supplemented by native, or other consultants if needed) will be using extremely specialized technology:

- The Genesis model Mark 1 human eyeball, paper USGS topographic maps, and wooden sticks cut to the stride of Decker. These reverse tech tools will be supplemented by years of experience on how humans who want to avoid capture behave.

Evading high tech infrared this and that maybe far easier than evading tracking teams using technology hundreds of years old in regards to paper maps and stone age technology in regards to pace sticks, tracking experienced human eyeballs and a tuned hunter's intuition.

These low tech trackers, however, need to be put on the correct (Decker's) sign / tracks. If that can be done and he is still in the area, the expert "Stone age" techies have a very good chance of finding him- even with Ranger evasion techniques.
what is a sign cutter?
As @The4TierBridge stated, it is a synonym for tracking down. The term is based on the usual method of Border Patrol tracking-

Identify the tracks "sign", then identify where the drug back packers or illegal crossers are likely going. The agent then "jumps" to the next spot where there is likely to be sign (a "cut"). The agent then "cuts the sign". Once the sign is confirmed, the agent then jumps to the next likely "cut" and attempts to "cut the sign" again.

The jumping allows for faster tracking than the direct tracking method. And.... experienced "sign cutters" can compensate for tricks like trying to brush sign out, walking backwards, walking in circles etc. They can also spot, then jump on miniscule amounts of "sign".

Thanks for posting, but OMG "Whitney detailed incidents that contributed to the separation, including a situation on Aug. 15, 2024, when Travis allegedly found one of their daughters passed out with a bathrobe tied around her neck at his mother's house and failed to inform Whitney.
"Passed out?" Like, drugged or something?

Asleep, tangled up in a bathrobe? That would make sense.

The 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 for Whitney Decker just hit one million dollars. Heartwarming.
(I know what you're trying to say)

I also hope that she gets good financial advice, and doesn't have vultures taking advantage of her grief.

Its not very detailed but Im thinking it might have been the belt? because it sounds alarming just to fall asleep in a bathrobe doesnt seem like it should be a big deal? sure makes you wonder what was going on there. Could have been a harmless incident but it doesnt sound like it, the way its written.

Im glad she got that money, just so she doesnt have to worry about work or bills or anything for as long as it takes her. Sadly, a million dollars will never compensate for her losses.

how horrible 😭
"signs" of hands being zip tied, so did he remove the zip ties?
i think i heard earlier that they were either zip tied or showed signs of being zip tied, so maybe for some reason he removed the zips from one of them. Interesting.
I cannot comprehend what frame of mind one would have to be in to torture these girls like that. his own flesh and blood.
One after the other, not a quick or pain free method,
I dont even want to think about the details

I apologize the map I posted marking the Rock Island Campsite was incorrect. The campsite is significantly more to south rather than the red circle I drew, Please replace with @sasha17 map posted below.
Thanks to @sasha17 for the correction! See her attachment below.

Rock Island Campground is significantly more to the south than the red circle on this map. It's to the south of Glacier Peak. Here's a crop from Google Maps. The pin is the campground. You can see Glacier Peak near the top left corner. Stehekin is in the top right/center. Leavenworth is just to the lower/right of the campground. Wenatchee is in the bottom right.

and that the grieving children didn't have to know that in this case the boogie man was a daddy.
Unfortunately, I think a daddy is the most common boogie man there is :(
I found a copy of the arrest affidavit for those interested.
The way she said there was no DV and then described action in line with DV :(
I had also not realized how young Travis is, the age of the children threw me off.
It was Travis Decker who initiated ending his marriage with Whitney Decker in 2023, because he "felt like he wasn't worth it," Cozart said.
Unexpected. Now this is first of all sad and in line with the MH problems that have been mentioned, but secondly this makes me kinda worried about the episode with the kid passed out, though I think that one was more likely the kid participating in these pass-out-games that were all the hype a few years ago.

I strongly suspect he's heading for Canada.

from: New leads in Travis Decker manhunt prompt massive search efforts near Pacific Crest Trail

Officials also asked citizens who own cabins or reside in remote areas of Chelan, Kittitas, King, Snohomish, and Okanogan counties to lock all of their doors, including any sheds or outbuildings, and leave their window blinds open and outside lights on.

Wenatchee to Okanogan County or Chelan County

I am a native to British Columbia, and I believe so too. From my research there is a campsite at Monument 78. And from what I see based on public records
1749189610126.webp

It seems like ID checks are at the Canadian side of the border, not the USA side. So if he wanted to get into Canada he can as it seems like this is a "blindspot" in border patrols. So in theory he can get into Canada and not get any ID checks done. From there he can simply go all the way into Hope then to Vancouver and as someone who lives in Vancouver and has been to Hope on trips to Alberta, it would be really easy for Decker to survive in the surrounding forests.

So yeah even if PCT is being heavily monitored, I think he can try getting by the less visisted Castle Creek Trail instead. From my research, Castle Creek Trail isn't a trail on the PCT line. If someone more familiar than me on wilderness navigation can correct me on this. Please let me know.

Whitney Decker, her family and her ex-husband’s family are all cooperating with the investigation but have requested privacy. She agreed to allow Cozart to speak on her behalf.

Cozart said Travis Decker, who was diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder and a borderline personality disorder after leaving active service, has been struggling with deteriorating mental health.

snip

Cozart said Travis Decker had been desperately seeking mental health services from Veterans Affairs and a veterans crisis line but was ultimately left to struggle in isolation.

“When you have a vet who is suffering from complex PTSD and other mental health issues, they do not have the mental bandwidth” to schedule needed exams and evaluations, she said. “This was a tragedy that could’ve been completely avoided with proper funding of mental health services for veterans.
“Whitney believes, as I do, that something broke inside of him,” Cozart said. “Travis would not have done what he did if he was himself. He clearly had some sort of break and everything that he had been living with, everything that had been bottled up inside of him for so long as far as trauma, just won out.”

Very sad, but not that uncommon: Travis was unable to fit into the civilian life after his Army service. This is something that any country that has army vets experiences.

JMO, of course, probably something was falling apart inside his brain way earlier and the process culminated in him quitting the army. He stopped fitting in. Why? Genetics, or possible TBE (we don’t know but might consider), or both.

I also wonder if there was substance use? Even in a homeless campground, one can easily forage for magic mushrooms, for example. I have a feeling that there could have been something lesser-known on board. Something that contributed into the overall situation.

The story is incredibly sad. The bizarre part is there, too. Give or take, there were no red flags to predict that he’d kill three daughters. All the diagnoses thrown around, BPD, NPD, PTSD do not even scratch the surface. His poor wife didn’t see that he was a danger; neither did his friends, the court or the doctors. What I read about Travis, sadly, indicates that he didn’t look like a walking menace. The process destroying his brain was well concealed from everyone.

Perhaps the reason he left the house was that he had these homicidal thoughts for a long time. And while it is true that most VA hospitals are located in Western WA and the one in Walla-Walla is too far from Wenachee, there are Zoom groups for vets. I think the reason he avoided treatment was the fear that the true diagnosis, when made, would put a huge cross on his potential army career.

I fail to guess what he suffers from. I think it is not something that is easily diagnosed. All that we objectively see is a huge “downward drift” in his life. One wonders if he left the house when the homolicidal thoughts got worse. But he missed his family, too, so he’d visit them. And then one day, that blackness brewing inside broke through when he was with the girls. I don’t believe that he planned anything. JMO.

Why is he running away now? Same thing, he is ill. I am not sure that he thinks in terms of “crime” or “guilt”. I wonder if it is some form of delirium, but it is strictly MOO.

He is very dangerous. I hope he is caught without accidents.

Something in the story reminds me of the Texas tower sniper.

JMO.

This permit pgm has ended, you now have to go to a regular port of entry I really should just delete this post, like as if hes going to apply for a permit!! lol. Its late I'im tired thats my excuse.
Haha no worries man. But from my research that I found, they only check the ID from the Canadian side, rather than the USA side.

I had to delete my post that says you cant get a permit anymore, like as if that is even realistic even if it was still a program lol.
I always hear about how canadas border Patrol is so hard to get through, I dont know if its true, Ive never had an issue

Agreed man. As someone native to BC, don't underestimate how observant someone from BC can be. So even if he made to Canada, I'd figure someone riding on horseback can find him.

thank you for explaining but I don't understand any of this 🤣 - maybe it's because I have no knowledge about tracking at all

I might google for further clarification but again, thanks for trying lol

that is way over my head too. I leave that for the pros.

His military pal describing him

Different photos of Travis

... in the days following the murder accusations, the source said Decker deleted nearly all his posts, photos, videos, and unfollowed most of his former comrades.

I'm in BC as well. As you were posting, I was looking at Silvertip Mountain Camping and the Serpent's Back trail heading into the Silver Creek area of Hope BC via Silver Skagit Road. At the top of Silver Skagit Road nearer the border is known for illegal crossings. That may have been tightened up though with the more recent increase in RCMP helicopter patrols along the border.
