8:57 a.m.: Police are reporting that there were three shooters; two fled the scene. One of the shooters was caught at a church across the street.

Is this accurate?
I do not think so . It appears that shooter may have gone after the victim - it happened in a gym , which would lead me to belive there were a lot of kids around . It seemed like he did not like go on a spree but went after one kkid not fact just IMO

What has changed that makes people even have the thought to do this?

http://everytown.org/article/schoolshootings/

Since the December 2012 shooting in Newtown, CT, there have been at least 74 school shootings in America.

And how many even before that? It's truly unbelievable. And how many more were rampages that didn't even occur in schools? Just in other every day places.

Yet, there are still parts of our population that will continue to make excuses, that will continue to remain deaf and dumb in the face of what is now a national crisis. Some will even walk into their local fast food restaurant en masse wearing their weaponry, in solidarity, to "prove" their "right" to bear arms.

It's repugnant, backwards, and just downright willful ignorance at this point.

I don't want to live like this anymore. And I do not want my children to have to live like this. Clearly, we cannot handle things they way they stand today. Compromise must occur.

I agree, sounds like one person was sought out in this. There have been no reports of multiple injured people. Praying for the family of the victim. I cannot imagine.

This is just horrible.

I hear you, I really do. I'm not going to get into any gun control debate in this thread, but one of the biggest problems is that the "bad guys" will always get weapons no matter what the laws are. The country is overrun with guns. (Legal and illegal)

Of course, some will say this is only about mental health but some people are just rage-filled jerks that want to hurt people.

I hear ya, too! As more is released we'll learn more why this happened. Not to mention how the shooter obtained a weapon in the first place. I'm on the fence with so little information out at the moment.

We've got to find a way to stop this, though. We have to.

Mental illiness money needed. But congress will have to talk and talk and talk and argue and talk bla bla and I am sure they are do for antoher vacation pretty soon so....

We need something quick. I think backpacks should be banned from all schools in the US - peroid - cant bring em on campus - at least it is a start of somekind

carry your books like we did

they don't even use texts books at my kid's HS. Everything is done electronically

There's already a Wikipedia entry on this school shooting. I found this when I was trying to access Reynolds High School website.

2014 shooting

On June 10, 2014, an active shooter situation was reported at the school during morning period. At least one injury (a teacher) occurred, as well as the death of one shooter, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff's office.[4] A second shooter was captured later at a nearby church. With SWAT and FBI agents dispatched to the scene, a heavy police presence has secured the school.[5][6] Students have been evacuated and are being released to their parents at the nearby Fred Meyer.

Parents are screaming. I think we're at a loss of what to do to stop this.

I couldn't agree with this statement more.

My eldest starts middle school next year. The end of her elementary school years terrifies me.

Although Newtown proved no place is truly safe for our children. Polly Klaas also taught that lesson, many moons ago. I've met Mr. Klaas, and as we spoke, the look in his eyes as he watched my daughters playing through the glass of the boardroom broke my heart. I will never forget that day.

Look at how many years in between Polly and Newtown. How many cases? How much has changed?

I want nothing more than for my children - everyone's children - to survive their childhood and prosper.

I believe it is their birthright to do so. It is my job to do everything in my power to mentor their success.

But how? I honestly don't know. :dunno:

My prayers to the parents and family members of the student who went to school today, but did not come home.

This is my worst nightmare.

That's what "Joe the Plumber", one of the hangers-on of McCain/Palin's election campaign says. Sadly, tragically, unfathomably, there are many who think the 2nd Amendment is the only one that matters.

A lot of schools still use textbooks. And even ones that don't, HS students take an average of 6 classes, each class requiring their OWN binders/notebooks, reading books, plus calculators, rulers, index cards...I could go on and on. Text books aren't the only reason back backs are carried.

Banning backbacks isn't the answer. These people are going to come to school armed anyways.

We don't have to live like this.

I look to the example of Australia, a country enough similar to our own, who decided back in the 90s they wouldn't live like this anymore.

And now they don't.
