A teacher was grazed while he was running away from the shooter

they were in a weight room for 45 minutes before class

reporter just told two kids someone else died

children said thye already knew

they said they were in gym beofre class start

heard shot thought it was a lighbulb

100 kids inside gym wiht no adults in weight room 45 minutes with no adults ..........

knew to be quiet when in there

some kids took control telling everyone to stay quiet

when cops arrived they were told to run over to a church

in church for 2 hours

And now the effects of trauma and PTSD. This is so sad.

From your link:

:scared:

The confusion that occurred about the number of gunmen at the scene apparently happened because two students were found carrying guns when authorities did a pat-down.

WHAT? No words needed, the information speaks for itself. Wow.

I'm not arguing backpacks/no backpacks. I say try it... but you have to make sure kids don't have a ton of stuff to lug around if they don't have backpacks, you can't just simply 'carry your books' anymore.
Why? I dont understand !

Reporter said female killed

speaker in her class came on and said this is a lockdown this is not a drill - turn off all the lights

she then heard the cops running around

thinks cops knocked down a door

they asked the kid on the bus (going to supermarket afterwards) if any of them rode to school wiht a child that had a guitar case on the bus ride this AM

one child said yes (a kid had a guitar case on her bus this morning) and they took her to question her

looks like they have started to use city busses also yeh they are

one child says shots were in the gym locker room

OMG! I just saw this in the Breaking News thread!

I don't even know what to say anymore.

I was posting just last night about the murders and horrible things happening in my state.

:please:

Desensitization? The "New Normal" An everyday occurrence? Part of their reality that they have come to expect? Children being raised in Violent American Culture? The success and effects of "shooter drills" as if they live in a war zone, because they do? Part of the effects of trauma from what they have just witnessed/experienced? Who knows anymore.

Unreal.

I'm reading the tweets of some of the students. I was a sophomore when 9/11 happened, and while it didn't happen IN our school, it almost felt like it did. It was really hard to process, and you go into shock, you make jokes that are probably not appropriate. Kids don't always know how to deal...especially since this seemed to happen in one part of the school. I've seen this a lot in school shootings in high schools, especially ones that start and end quickly.

Fred Meyer's brought out shopping carts of water and cookies for the waiting families. (Just wanted to point out some of the kindness in the world on such a sad day.)

Unreal.

It could be shock as well. It makes you feel like you're not in your skin.

Elementary age can, but middle school and high school can't carry backpacks in my town. They can have those small draw string nylon bag though.

I can't think of anything that can be done to stop school shootings. The interiors could be made as secure as government buildings or airports, but that would not stop shootings outside the schools. The root of this problem lies in our Constitution. Please don't get me wrong I believe in the right to bear arms but I am willing to give up that right if it would lead to a safer society. I am just sick of hearing that guns don't kill people. Tell that to the parents who have lost a child due to a shooting whether in a school or not. My dh calls these events, school shooting du jour! That is exactly what it has become.
