My thoughts go out to Lori's family. This must be extraordinarily difficult for them.

It could be days or even weeks before the North Santiam River level east of Idanha drops enough for the Linn County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team to safely recover a body hung up on tree branches about four feet below the surface.

The body is thought to be that of Lori Blaylock of Bend, who has been missing since Oct. 28. Authorities believe she was killed and then dumped into the river about a mile from where the body was found. Her husband, Steven Paul Blaylock, is charged in her death. He is in the Deschutes County Jail.

Kayakers spotted the body about 12:30 p.m. Saturday, but did not report the sighting until later that afternoon because there is no cell service in the area, said Linn County Detective Sgt. Bob Clark, who supervises the county’s dive team.

:offtopic:
This man, David Sheldon, was a friend of Woody Blaylock (and of my sister). He died Tuesday when a tree fell on top of his van in which he was sleeping.

"They made several attempts. The divers were very dedicated trying to get in there, they just couldn't," Marion County Public Information Officer Don Thomson said the next day. "Once they got two or three feet into the water, they were being swept downstream."

On Monday, Linn County Undersheriff Bruce Riley told NewsChannel 21 that water levels in the area continue to rise, and as of now, they don't know where the body is.

Riley said they are watching the river daily, waiting for levels to drop and the swift current to ease, so they can continue the search.
....................
Marion and Linn County deputies have been working together since kayakers on Dec. 11 reported seeing a body trapped among tree branches and debris in an eddy of the river, just east of Idanha.

They should have set up something a little ways downstream that could "catch" anything large like a body. Just in case it came loose from it's location where the kayakers saw it. At least they'd have a smaller radius to work with in case it's not still in the same spot.

I hope they can recover her (assuming it's Lori) soon.

Carl - Wow... not been a good few months for Lori's friends.

Yes, that is what I would have said if I hadn't been blinded at the time by the steam coming out of my ears.

I think if this had been one of THEIR family member's bodies... they would have found a way to make sure it did not go anywhere. :twocents:

Let me share with you that I know many deputies in the Linn County Sheriff's department and have even met the current and past sheriffs. They are a wonderful and compassionate team and are known to respond to every call no matter how trivial it may seem to them.

I've been rushed during this holiday season and haven't had a chance to touch bases with my main deputy friend on this issue, but I can't imagine that they would take this situation lightly. For now I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that a recovery effort would be dangerous to the SAR team because I'm familiar with their overall outlook on caring for the county.

Also, please bear in mind that it has been raining almost daily here.

I have no insight on this case other than the obvious that has already been stated. But in college, I travelled across the country to spend a summer in Central Oregon -- Bend, Madras, La Pine, Prineville, Warm Springs, etc. I have a fondness in my heart for this beautiful area and have been watching this case closely. RIP, Lori...

Thanks, Kimster. I'm sure they are doing everything they can, and thinking of the safety of the recovery team. It's just frustrating, knowing that Lori is there and they can't get to her. Especially this time of year. Her family is in my thoughts.

Body in N. Santiam River Appears to Have Moved

Linn County Undersheriff reports that their dive teams have discovered that the body found in the water of north Santiam River had moved. Police believe that it is the body of missing bend woman, Lori Blaylock.

A written report states that a dive team went into the water where they last found the body and determined that the body must have been dislodged from the underwater debris where it was trapped. Now, they have to begin the search again.

New Search for Blaylock's Body Proves Fruitless

The search for Lori Blaylock's body resumed Thursday but again was not successful, so it has been called off for the winter.

Frigid rushing water and tangled debris are not the only factors that have been working against crews scouring the North Santiam River for Blaylock's body.

Linn halts search for body

The Linn County sheriff’s office has temporarily called off the search for the body of a Bend woman believed to have been killed and dumped in the North Santiam River some three months ago.

[snip]

From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, about 40 personnel searched 10 miles from the mouth of the North Santiam River to Detroit Reservoir, on both sides of the bank and in the water — the area where Blaylock indicated he dumped the body, the sheriff said.

Mueller said conditions in the river have made the search extremely difficult.

“Divers couldn’t see 2 inches away from their face, it was so muddy,” he said. The river is also full of debris and moving dangerously fast, he added.

“I’m not trying to be harsh,” Mueller said, “but I am not going to risk someone’s life on finding a dead person. Until river conditions change, we’re done.”

The search is to resume in early to mid May, Mueller said. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office does not have its own dive team.

“We don’t like the fact the woman is in that river,” Mueller said. “We want Bend to get the criminal piece wrapped up and we want to get this lady home. She deserves that.”

Sure hope they have enough to "Get the criminal piece wrapped up" without that body.

Oh man. :( This is so dang sad. :( Her poor family and friends! I understand that it must be horribly dangerous though. The water levels in all the rivers are abnormally high. It's just the whole thought of her remains being out there - knowing they are there!

I hope they throw the book at this perp. :furious:

Steven Blaylock pleaded not guilty to charges of killing his wife Lori Blaylock and dumping her body into the Santiam River.

[snip]

Investigators continue to monitor water levels but said it could be until summer before dive teams can go back into the water and continue recovery efforts.

A tentative trial date has been set. Blaylock will be back in court on the 28th.

North Santiam River search planned for missing Bend woman
7:06 AM, Apr. 1, 2011

snip from later in article
Marion County Officer Don Thompson said Thursday that crews of 35 to 40 searchers each from Deschutes, Crook, Jefferson, Benton, Linn and Marion counties will bring boats, ATVs and cadaver dogs to scour the river and its banks. KTVZ says the search will stretch from Idanha to the Detroit Reservoir.

Thompson said officials are planning this as a real-life training exercise. There's no new information but officials are incorporating an area where a body believed to be Blaylock's was last seen by kayakers.

Searchers brave cold to look for Eugene native's body

Volunteers braved snow and rain to search the Santiam River for clues in the case of a Eugene native and Churchill High School graduate who disappeared from her home in Bend last October.

Approximately 115 volunteers and public safety personnel participated in Saturday's search for the body of Lori Blaylock.

The search included 6 miles of the Santiam River as it feeds into the east end of Detroit Lake, and an additional 4.5 miles of shoreline on the lake, which is about 50 miles east of Salem.

[snip]

No major discoveries were made during the day. A number of items were collected. They will be examined further to determine if they have any relevance to the Blaylock case.
