The Latest: Jailed Bundy says 'land belongs to the people'

“PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Latest on an armed group that took over buildings at a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon (all times local):

12:15 p.m.

The jailed leader of an armed occupation of a national wildlife refuge in Oregon says "the land belongs to the people" and should be turned over to local authorities.

In a statement read Tuesday by his attorney, Mike Arnold, Ammon Bundy reiterated his calls for the four remaining occupiers at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Oregon to leave. He said that would allow federal and state authorities to also depart.

Bundy says county authorities should then take over the site, something local officials have said is impractical.

Bundy's statement tracks with a letter his father, Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, sent to local authorities on Monday saying federal and state police should be removed from the area and the refuge should be placed under local control.

Bundy says he has been in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day and hasn't spoken with his father.”

Ummmm, but they don't recognize local authorities either, right? Make up your minds!

I'm so tired of these ridiculous fools trying desperately to make their idiotic occupation into something it never was - of any importance to the majority of the American people. They can't even agree on their own agenda, FFS.

The video is in the possession of the FBI. It will be their decision, if they release it or not. I would guess they won’t, and will just keep it as evidence.
It's easy enough to "lose" video, but they will have a harder time getting rid of Finicum's truck :)

Ah, but these details do matter. If the women are found to be telling the truth, there will be enormous consequences both legally and in the court of public opinion.

The number of shots that the women heard doesn't really mean a whole lot unless you know what the shooter, if any, was aiming for- There could have been warning shots, someone could have shot at the tires, or something.

What we know is that apparently no one else was shot so unless the federal agents of Oregon are all really bad shots they probably weren't trying to kill every one in the vehicle.

RSBM

When he says "the people" he means "rich white men who can afford to buy land and use it to make more money for themselves."

Actually, he means "rich white men who can afford to buy land and use it to make more money for themselves, but think they should be able to use 'the people's' land for free and without oversight, instead.

A spokesperson confirmed evangelist Franklin Graham spoke to #Oregonstandoff occupiers and to FBI. Wouldn't say if they were still talking.

Their account of hundreds of shots being fired into the truck certainly doesn't make much sense. They may have mistaken non-lethal rounds for bullets and exaggerated the number, but the story about being shot at during the initial stop is harder to explain. Shawna Cox claims the side mirror arm was hit, so, unless it was a rubber pellet or something, photos of the truck should demonstrate whether she is lying or not.

One of the things I don't like about getting my news from Twitter is that some entries just don't make any sense.

Judge Mosman gave Pete Santilli's lawyers 2 days to provided added context to what govt. called his 'incendiary statements' #oregonstandoff
11:58 AM - 2 Feb 2016

Santilli, like O'Shaughnessy, spent nights at a motel instead of the refuge. Government lawyers contend the Ohio man doesn't respect federal authority and won't return to Portland for court hearings.

They pointed to threatening statements he made against federal agents on his radio show. Santilli's lawyer countered that his client is a "shock jock," and it's his radio personality to amp things up.

Mosman said he can't judge the provocative comments without additional context. He scheduled a hearing for Thursday.

Note to self: when doing armed standoff, spend nights in a motel.

Reason 1: plausible deniability
Reason 2: more comfortable

Shawna Cox doesn't seem to have much cognizance when it comes to time and space so I am not at all sure she has much ability to estimate the number of gun shots that might (or might not) have been fired.

A Nebraska radio host challenged an FBI officer about getting thru the roadblock, asking who ordered the road closed. (1/2) #OregonStandoff
2:08 PM - 2 Feb 2016

The officer was not amused. He told her she would get arrested if she drove past the cones. (2/2) #Oregonstandoff

My note to self: If you're thinking about doing any armed stand off, get your head examined!

Victoria Sharp claims that, after they had gotten out, agents asked them if anyone remained in the truck, saying "if anyone is still in there, they're going to die". She claims they then began to shoot into it. This seems to be backed up by the video, which shows the rear passenger window being progressively blow out from 18:54 to 18:58.

Jason Patrick, a 43-year-old Georgia resident and one of the last holdouts at the refuge, faced charges in August 2014 of “making terrorist threats” after he “threatened to kill everyone” inside a Georgia municipal court building, according to prosecutors.

Joseph Oshaughnessy, a 45-year-old Arizona resident now facing charges for his role in the occupation, has previously been arrested for disorderly conduct, domestic violence and drug offenses, according to court records.

Brian Cavalier, a 44-year-old Nevada man, has a series of felony convictions that restrict his access to firearms but has nonetheless consistently possessed weapons, prosecutors said.
Duane Ehmer, the Oregon occupier frequently photographed with his horse at the refuge, is a convicted felon banned from possessing firearms – but he, too, was carrying a pistol when he was arrested last week, according to the records.
After he was arrested last week, Ryan Payne, a 32-year-old Montana man, “claimed to have an absolute duty to prevent the federal government from continuing to manage lands” and “claimed a right to use force to oppose an unlawful arrest”, prosecutors said. He has also repeatedly been involved in armed efforts to oppose the federal government, according to records.
Pete Santilli, the conservative radio host who live-streamed the occupation until his arrest, previously bragged on YouTube about refusing to turn in his guns in violation of a restraining order filed against him.
Ryan Bundy was convicted of obstructing police in 2008 and again interfered with an arresting officer in 2015, prosecutors wrote in the filings.

Are we supposed to be upset that they broke the window?

Anyone who got out when the police told them to was in no danger.

Sometimes bad things happen to your vehicle when you run a police roadblock.

If the video shows differently from what I remember the video is wrong:

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/02/02/us/witness-lavoy-finicum-killed-oregon/

"I'm more wiling now than before to expose what the federal government is doing because it's worth it. If I lose my life for the future of America it's worth it. People lost their lives for our freedom. And if I lose mine for the freedom of others, than it's worth it."

So who is trying to kill her?

And what if they are found to have been firing live rounds and not gas canisters? Is that still cool? To have riddled a car with bullets on the off chance that someone might be hiding inside?

Well I reckon they probably did some scouting before the roadblock and may have had a pretty good idea how many people were there.

As for the people who might have gotten killed if they refused to obey LE orders but didn't because they don't exist, I can't really get very upset about them. But I'm sure they were lovely people and their death was a great loss to us all.

The holdout occupiers said in their final video that Cliven Bundy was encouraging them to stay, and they agreed.

“He’s telling people to keep fighting, and that’s the absolute truth,” a speaker believed to be occupier David Fry said. “It’s a fight that’s going to keep going.”

Ammon Bundy’s attorney has said Bundy didn’t recognize Fry’s name and that he wasn’t a core member of the group. The other remaining occupiers are Jeff Banta and married couple Sandy and Sean Anderson.

It seems strange to me... If I was doing armed standoff with a random group of people I think I would like to make a point of finding out who the heck they are... If not for any other reason, to make sure they're not undercover agents of a fascist government.
