Judge Greenland believes one of the reasons for Oscars detainment is his lack of any remorse or contrition. He reminds us that parole is a privilege one needs to earn.
Many of us would agree with these sentiments. After all, OP has never shown even a hint of remorse. To date hes never said I killed Reeva, only that it was an accident, and when pushed by Nel during the trial, the most he could bring himself to say was I did. Remorse is one of the considerations for a prisoner being granted correctional supervision or house arrest.
Lisa and Nick think theres something else at play. They believe OP may do a runner and become a fugitive and that this may be the reason why the board has chosen to detain him for the time being.
The Pistorius family certainly has the means to whisk Oscar away and provide him with a comfortable life. A month from now, if the appeal is successful, Oscars sentence could increase by many years. If it does, and if Oscars at home with his uncle, do we really believe Oscar will willingly turn himself in? Hasnt the Pistorius family already, in many ways, helped Oscar go on the run? Havent they always helped him evade responsibility?
This has been discussed here many times. He certainly has the wherewithal to flee the country, particularly with the aid of his uncles, one of whom owns a helicopter. The Pistorius family have business interests in the neighbouring country of Mozambique which doesnt have an extradition treaty with SA . This would be so convenient the family could arrange a job, shelter, freedom and their ability to visit him whenever they chose. If this thought was ever going to cross his mind, that time would be now if he was to be released prior to the appeal.
