Oscar Pistorius - Discussion Thread #64 ~ the appeal~

What a hot mess this is. First they said he was going home in late August. And then they said OP had to wait in jail while awaiting his appeal. But then, under pressure from OP's attorneys, they said that they would have an emergency meeting today, and he could possibly be quickly released. Oh wait, meeting postponed until end of this month....

I am fine with keeping him in as long as possible. But it is weird that it seems so chaotic and haphazard. JMO

I'd love to know the whole back story to the trial and this recent saga. The behind the scenes gymnastics of many of the players must be fascinating. I think there's been quite a bit of horse trading going on.

I expect to see more on this in the not to distant future. I cannot imagine the Pistorius family will not react to a wait of 9 days if legal threats by them have enabled a next day meeting of the board in question. Logically it would take minutes to ascertain what Reeva's parents feel and it should be no different from their previous input at the June Board meeting.

All this posturing by the family further shows how 'entitled' they feel they are. OP should be treated the same as any other South African but we really don't know how any other prisoners, in the same circumstances, are being treated.

“When he realised that had happened, then he couldn’t stop and he had to carry on until it was finished.”

I'm all with Barry Steenkamp.

There's a huge amount of confusion over when #OscarPistorius parole hearing will be. Steenkamp lawyer says 15 Oct, OP lawyers told 21 Oct

Here's the bulletin:

Pistorius's parole meeting rescheduled

Pretoria - The Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Supervision and Parole Board (CSPB) has rescheduled its meeting for the consideration of placing offender Oscar Pistorius under correctional supervision to 15 October 2015.

The session, held at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre on Friday, was attended by the former paralympian Pistorius and his lawyer. They were informed that the parole board is consulting with the family of the victim.

It is expected that the family of Reeva Steenkamp, whom he is serving a five-year sentence for killing, will make a submission on the possible placement of Pistorius under community corrections early next week.

The Kgosi Mampuru CSPB session followed the decision of the Parole Review Board to set aside a decision taken on 5 June 2015 to place Pistorius under correctional supervision on 21 August 2015.

The Parole Review Board concurred with the concerns expressed by Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha about the premature placement decision.

In terms of the Correctional Services Act, offenders sentenced in Terms of Section 276(1)(i) of the Criminal Procedure Act to serve only one-sixth of their sentence in custody before placement consideration should serve the full duration of the mandatory custody period before being considered for placement. – SAnews.gov.za

The least the authorities should do is leave the Steenkamp family out of this circus that is going on at present.

Here's an article that suggests Roger Dixon may have perjured himself in a trial many years ago.

http://www.dailymaverick.co.za/arti...-new-evidence-in-inge-lotz-case/#.Vhl6ZRH4_IV

"What they have uncovered – including a clear imprint of the implicated hammer on a bloodied towel found in the bathroom, and their discovery that “forensic geologist” Roger Dixon, who also testified in the Pistorius trial, had lied to the court – is enough for the state to initiate a retrial, he says.

“Roger Dixon's report is fraudulent, perjurious, incorrect and dishonest. It was a legal error to accept it as prima facie evidence. We can and will prove this in a court of law,” says Mollett.

"Dixon had told the court that he had met with a Constable Swartz ... However, this was a lie, as Mollett found when he spoke with Swartz. Swartz has never met Dixon in his life, and after many requests, Dixon could not provide us with details of this alleged meeting. This is perjury.”

Oh, one maybe interested to the incidents/accidents which perhaps may happen in the future ... Karma, alcohol, drugs?, not sober party people, guns?, ... Terrible thought to have a party/many parties there. The neighbours seem to be very tolerant to the men's plans. Or is it only a big joke??

The fact he lied (and I doubt it was unintentional) in a previous case proves he is a dishonest and unreliable 'expert'. Playing with people's lives in this way is inexcusable. I know Roux had to scrape the barrel getting 'experts' in, but Dixon's "I wasn't trying to mislead the court milady" after using a model shorter than OP (to, IMO, mislead the court about what the Stipps would have seen from the bathroom) was a lie, and he did intend to mislead the court. Seems like that wasn't the first time. Mind you, an expert witness who lies/misleads fits right in to OP's team.

No news:

"He complained that he wanted a bath. They [correctional services) built a bath in his cell. He also had a complaint about his bed. And they replaced his bed for him," says Murasiet Mentoor, the regional manager of the Judicial Inspectorate, who reviews hundreds of written prisoner complaints.

Mentoor says Pistorius complained about his gym equipment, so they changed that, too.

Mentoor said prison officials offered to let Pistorius cook the raw produce, but he preferred to only buy processed food from the prison store.

... is housed in the hospital wing of the prison, where he had his own cell and separate toilet away from the general prison population.

"When you go there, at the hospital section, it is very secure and where he is, it is very clean. It's nice and neat," says Morake.

"If you are a high-profile inmate, you are at risk because the other inmates and the gangsters within the correctional services will target you," he said.

What about the bit that says if you are a high profile inmate: ' you are at risk because the other inmates and the gangsters within the correctional services will target you," he said. '? Should he have been placed in the main population then and to hell with the fact that he would be targeted?
