GUILTY PA - Nathalyz Rivera, 3, starved to death, Philadelphia, 9 Sept 2013

There was plenty of nourishment for the parents-that is clear.

And isnt that frequently the case-I guess they missed the memo that children come first.

There is going to be a plea deal in the works, but I hope there is a huge amount of time served. At least long enough to cut down on the possibility that they will be in the position to do this again in the near future.

Dirty thin kids and a trashed house-why oh why didnt anyone try to save these little ones?

Oh god this makes me ill.

I used to care for a 3 year old who weighed 11 pounds. I remember the day we met. This man walked up arrying her and it looked like a newborn baby, then these arms and legs unfolded and no, she was 3 years old.

I won't share her story here, but I do have photos of what her size was, but be forwarded, THEY are disturbing.

I audibly gasped. That child doesn't even appear to be human.

What's even more terrifying is that those photos were taken after she spent time in a special nutritional hospital/clinic.

Raise my taxes, get a kitty going, print up some "Perhaps You Shouldn't Procreate" pamphlets, and start handing out voluntary vasectomies and tubal ligations.

I hope that the surviving children can find some sort of normal life, away from the absolute-wastes-of-flesh-inhumane 'parents'.

O, I was thinking what a sin for the older kids that were left to feed their little sister. Somewhere up the road that will have to play back in their minds. Hopefully they will get all the help they need emotionally.

Good thinking about the pamphlets. Tax wise though we already paid to finance that woman's casino trips. No way as long as checks are coming in are people going to stop procreating even after three kids which sadly was the case here.

Filly, I get what you're saying. BUT.

They'd lived at the house for four years, neighbors had complained to the landlord about how poorly the house was kept up (i.e. the window-breaking fight....also the rear roof was caving in, iirc)....

And the darn neighbors that have been talking to reporters have actually said that they rarely saw the kids, when they did see them, they looked pale and thin, dirty, etc. The one lady talked about hearing the baby crying endlessly through the wall that separates her house from theirs. People knew the kids were being left home alone.

People knew. Apparently no one actually cared. Not enough to do something, say something, call somebody. Nobody cared but plenty of people knew bad things were happening to those kids.

Relatives knew. They talked about the baby being sick and not looking well when the mother had her out at a family shindig (and was attempting to feed her mashed potatoes, I believe...)

I give up on CPS in Philly. I had hope when the caseworker-idiots were sentenced in Danieal Kelly's horrific death....hope that things might change.

Guess not.

With all my heart I feel you tillie. I truly do. Unfortunately in our neighborhood we have all had to call police, DHS, L&I, and any number that begins with 676. People do care. We care here. It's so frustrating when you witness obvious horrible conditions for children and nothing gets done. I've seen it on the other end as my dear friend has been a foster mother to some of the children actually taken from parents. It would break her heart when they'd pick up these kids for required supervised visits with said "mothers'. Broke her heart worse when the kids were eventually given back.

You can complain on end to these slumlords. They do not care. They are collecting a check. They'll rent to anybody, and everybody. You won't then know who actually is in the house because people come and go such as relatives, addicts, and whatever man is the boyfriend of the week.

Also I feel so bad for the police. All they can do is take the report. They can make an arrest. They can call DHS. They then get to go home and wonder forever what happened to these kids.

Kids screaming through walls. Screaming outside the windows. 2 year olds out roaming alone. Babies in windows with only diapers on dancing around for longer than an hour before anybody inside even knows. Children locked outside all day long. You call the police. You call DHS. From there? You see it happen all over again.

In the case of the people that are speaking on that block I can't speculate what goes on with them. I don't live their life. Sometimes other people have things to hide of their own. I can attest that people do care.

Definately understand your point, tillie. It's just unfortunately I've seen how some of this mess goes on and on and thank goodness there has been no child starved to death here in this part of the city. Then again who knows? How would we even know?

Filly, I think I'm just frustrated.

I grew up in a nasty city (truthfully, Trenton wasn't quite as awful then as it is now) and the whole inner city attitude of not getting involved, not telling, minding your own business...just makes me angry when there are little lives at stake. I get it, I really do. We learned to keep our heads down and our mouths shut in order to be safe...but if babies or kids were being beaten or sarved or neglected, I just don't think I could have let it go.
And DHS in Philly sucks. I keep going back to Danieal.
