People being detained and "exported" by ICE

And as pessimistic as this sound, I wonder if he is even still alive 😔

I have been wondering the same thing. His family sent him to the US in the first place to get away from the attempted recruitment by a gang (Barrio 18). There are probably gang members in that prison.

When he was given legal status by a US judge in 2019 it was due to a "well-founded" fear of gang persecution, and ICE did not appeal.

imo

Alleged. Key word throughout.

Court has yet to rule, so "alleged" is not removed from the converstaion.

if this is in reply to my post regarding the 2019 abrego-garcia case... the judge believed the allegations regarding abrego-garcia being an ms-13 gang member, thus his ruling, and abrego-garcia provided no evidence to the contrary. he ignored becoming a citizen for years, he failed to appear in court, he ignored the privileges of living in the us gave him. people everywhere seem to think it's okay to pick and choose which judge ruling to follow. sticking to the constitution and the appreciating the privileges of living in the us is my choice.

if it's not in reply to my post, please ignore

JENA, La. (AP) — Immigration judge rules that Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil can be deported.

The case was heard in Louisiana. I think these types of things affect the outcome. Internal geopolitics. imo

"Lawyers for Khalil are expected to appeal. And a federal judge in New Jersey has temporarily barred Khalil’s removal from the country."

(from your link)

By that same token, if this administration had stuck to the Constitution, this "error" never would have happened. Due process is not optional, and that isn't my opinion; it's the opinion of the Supreme Court.

The whole point of due process is for situations just like this.

i didn't say due process was optional. he received due process. he was ruled by the 2019 judge to be in this country for years as an illegal and an ms-13 gang member and ordered out of country. but he didn't leave, he stayed here. ms-13 was ruled to be a terrorist organization, and according to the rules of the alien enemies act he had his due process... he met all the criteria for being flown to prison outside the us. sending him back to his country of origin could have been avoided... yes, if ice had not made a clerical mistake and honored his request, and/or by abrego-garcia becoming a us citizen years ago everything could have been avoided.... he thumbed his nose at the privileges he had at his fingertips... so don't blame me and don't misquote me, please.

The reason he stayed is because the judge gave him permission - legal status. He did not stay illegally.

"In October 2019, an immigration judge denied Abrego Garcia’s asylum request but granted him protection from being deported back to El Salvador because of a “well-founded fear” of gang persecution, according to his case. He was released, and ICE did not appeal.

Abrego Garcia checked in with ICE yearly while the Department of Homeland Security issued him a work permit, his attorneys said in court filings. He joined a union and was employed full time as a sheet metal apprentice."

his permission to stay was ended in 2025, and he got his due process.

imo... as unpopular as it may seem.

That's not entirely accurate, according to the administration itself. He should not have been arrested.

"Abrego Garcia “should not have been removed,” he said,"

"He is a protected legal resident and had been living in Maryland since 2011."

ms-13 was ruled to be a terrorist organization, and according to the rules of the alien enemies act he had his due process... he met all the criteria for being flown to prison outside the us.

Per the Supreme Court, he has not had due process, particularly for removal. What is the criteria for being flown to prison outside the US? We have literally never done this before, so I'm unsure how there could be criteria floating around somewhere?

sending him back to his country of origin could have been avoided... yes, if ice had not made a clerical mistake

It wasn't a clerical error. It was an administrative error, per the White House (see link above)

I didn't blame nor misquote you. I responded to you.

<modsnip: Quoted post was removed>

Due process doesn't work like that. Since he was here under legal status, he must have due process to remove the legal status. That's the point of due process. We don't just give people legal status and then decide with a snap of our finger that we can take it away. That's the whole point of due process and the Supreme Court voted 9-0 on the due process stipulation for just this reason (see link in my last post).

JENA, La. (AP) — Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil can be kicked out of the U.S. as a national security risk, an immigration judge in Louisiana found Friday during a hearing over the legality of deporting the activist who participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

It’s not clear from Guardian that the Australian man was “in employment” per his visa. If he was not in the job for which he had a visa… then his visa would most likely be invalid. People get denied entry for stuff like this all over the world, in most nations.
Individuals who have not got correct visa need to be careful with words at international borders.
Words like “I’m looking for work” “I live here” “I’m here looking for a place to live” without correct visa is a problem. I’m aware of people arriving in UK for “business trip” border staff look thru bag, see resume & check phone for interview appointments and deny entry.

If his employment and visa were correct - it’s not clear from this Guardian report.

Entry denials happen every day, all over the world. There’s no “fair”.

t's 'government'. Louisiana. We of a democracy mind, all before t got in, hope a justice, a real justice comes to be for t. Not yet, he has evaded that so far. The insider trading information is gathered and being gathered as we speak. Worry more about that, country and all the good things dismantled out of revenge, firings of qualified true patriots because they don't agree with it. Nazi time? Horrifying history repeating itself. Big picture, not a personal feeling towards a person based on what t doesn't like, let democracy get back to America asap. Don't think as many people are wearing their red caps around if they are informed of what is going on due to him in the world, never mind the country we knew. Informed, well read of all information available, open minded and eyes kind of reading and material. It is all available ... to all.

Now THIS is a witch hunt. Trump's WH accuses him of distributing flyers for Hamas, but it doesn't have evidence.

Former Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil to remain detained in Louisiana for now

Pro Palestine is not pro hamas. Education needed to many. Read about the man before assuming he is some crazed hamas flyer handing out person. Be surprised. putin rounds them up and puts in prisons or worse, if it is, for protesting about his killings and non democratic or non freedom living, kindddddddd of like t and this man. p, his hero, what's that say, think about the BIG difference in countries, but before t.

The article states (BBM) .... "He has been living on the US east coast for the better part of a decade – where his American partner, apartment, work studio and clients remain."

Evidently working for clients in his work studio. With a valid work visa ..... "visa was still valid for more than 12 months".

I think border security are required to be ruthless, now. There's probably special training- the opposite of customer service: customer abuse.

And if they don't like the documentation, they're not going to give someone the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he just needs to refresh his visa, so it has a recent date.

However, I do think people who want to essentially live permanently in any foreign country, need more than a temporary work visa.
