People inside the USA don't seem to understand consequences, so they do nothing until it makes a difference to their lives.

We saw that with recent protests. No one in the USA cares when Canada and Greenland are threatened, trade agreements are violated, or unjust tariffs are imposed. They only care when their personal investments are hit by the global response to tariffs. Then they have something to say - but only when it impacts them personally.

As I pointed out on the “Tariff” thread @otto, I don’t think you’re seeing the extent and variety of the protests in the US almost daily. Only Rachel Maddow on MSNBC is showing these and she zeroes in on the signs people carry. They vary, but I have definitely seen Canada and Greenland mentioned. It kind of depends on what the latest news is about. But thinking Americans (and there are many, contrary to popular opinion ) are very well aware of the impact of Trump on the world, not just on themselves, and are sick about it. I’m begging you not to generalize in such a negative way. It’s disheartening in your otherwise excellent posts, which are much appreciated.

US citizen who cares! I've contacted my representatives weekly since January on various aspects of this mayhem that Trump has caused: education, social security, human rights, tariffs, Ukraine, immigration. Ive peacefully taken a stand with others across the country. That's the scary part, our voice seems loud, but no one is hearing us.

What's strange is that the USA government says they have no reason to request his return to the USA, El Salvador said it has no reason to send him back to the USA. At the same time, it seems that everyone agrees there's no reason for him to be in prison.

Why isn't he released from prison. No government needs to do anything for him beyond releasing him safely from prison. Why hasn't that happened?

Because Trump is paying El Salvador to keep him in that prison. Trump wants the US to see that he is taking care of business, and it will be a bruise to his ego/image, if Abrego Garcia does not stay there. The statement Trump is making with our tax dollars. MOO it's crazy how it doesn't make sense, yet....people are still buying it.

And those are valid reasons to deport someone, as long as it's done the right way.

There's been other cases where it doesn't seem to be as justified.

"Currently facing charges" doesn't get it with me. Anyone can point the finger at anyone. We have dozens if not hundreds of threads here. Cases discussed in exquisite detail until the accused gets their due process.

Facing charges is no excuse to ship someone in chains to a foreign country for the rest of their life. Here under the constitution we can't imprison anyone for life. Until proven guilty.

I don't think that's fair. There was actually quite a bit of protest by residents, citizens, and politicians about Greenland/Canada, tariffs, and all the other absurdities. But also, this is how MAGA operates -- throwing everything including the kitchen sink at the wall so people's heads are spinning and they have to pick and choose the topic they'll fight back on. It's incredibly manipulative and psychologically abusive. My point is, just because you don't see the disgust of the US for what he's threatening and doing internationally, don't assume it doesn't exist or that we're not up in arms about it. We are.

i guess this is the rachel maddow/msnbc you speak of... the ones who just settled a lawsuit for falsely accusing a physician.

A few weeks ago, Abrego Garcia was transferred from CETOM to a more conventional jail in Santa Ana. Before he met with the Senator, he was taken from that jail, given new clothes, and cleaned up. They met in the restaurant of a nearby hotel, which had been cleared of all other patrons. The Salvadoran authorities served two margaritas to them. Neither touched any drinks placed in front of them.

I read that specific quote a few days ago, but now I can't find it. In retrospect, I find it odd that the VP would admit such a thing.

EDIT: I checked an AI that provided sources of that specific quote. When I checked the sources, the quote was omitted and simply said El Salvador has not provided evidence of MS -13 membership.

A now-fired Maryland police officer authored the 2019 gang report that the government referenced when it mistakenly sent a Maryland father to a notorious prison in El Salvador, documents obtained by USA TODAY show.

In 2021, Mendez' name appeared on the "Do not call" list Braveboy released. Those are police deemed unreliable because of their disciplinary records, crimes or other alleged misconduct. If those officers are called to testify, prosecutors disclose the officer's history to the defense.

Speaking on CNN April 16, Braveboy said the 2019 report was based partly on a confidential informant, as well as the controversial GangNet database, which has since been disbanded. Operators of the system warned at the time that it was intended for intelligence only and should not be used as the basis for arrests or charges.
