LOL... what's w/ Joran and steak?!

Well he isn't starving now, as stated prior to the murder of SF. He was hungry and begging his friends for money.

Detain him for what???? The FBI had not even charged him.

Aruba knew the sting was going on.
They knew the money had been transferred.
They knew the exchange had been made, on camera, in person.

The FBI did not have an opportunity to get an indictment.
Aruba knew he was leaving the country.
And they had the ability to hold him on suspicion of a crime.

He wasn't charged or indicted any of the three times he was arrested in Aruba for Natalee's case. None of the players were. There system allows you to be detained as a suspect for seven days while the evidence is presented to a judge and then extended holds as the evidence comes in.

The FBI did not have the jurisdiction to hold him.
Aruba let him go.
Again.

I always wondered why in the world she would have gone into his room, could it be that he had borrowed money from her or something and she followed him to make sure she'd get it back.... But still, it seems more likely she would wait in the lobby for it or get the help of staff to get it if that were the case (especially since her dad's friend reportedly runs the casino or is the owner or something). Anyway, I was waiting for the video to come out to see what we could see, and then the first time I saw it it did almost look like she'd handed him something at the table. But in the closeup I saw it was only a handshake, nothing handed to him. (At least in the video segments that have been released). Then she got out money that she put on the table. Then moved over to sit by him. Then preened a bit. Maybe she was actually a little interested in him, even if her female friend thinks she was a lesbian. I'm only speculating of course

And @ about 2:40 in the video, when they both leave the table - he stops/waits at the area divider (unsure whether he should go w/her) - you can see her turn her head back towards him (realizing he isn't following her). He gestures to his chest with his hand - as if to say, you want me to come with you, and then he probably catches up with her.

The only place that I heard that her legs were up was on Nancy's show. The picture posted last night showed that she was wrapped in the bedspread from the bed, laying on her stomach, if I recall that graphic picture correctly.

The graphic picture did show her in a different position than originally described. But it also showed her covered differently, so I don't know if that is how they found her or just a photo before she was removed from the room.

They definitely seem a bit rough around the edges where crime scene processing goes. Hard to know.

we could speculate forever, couldn't we. Maybe she took off her own clothes and he freaked out because he is not interested in women sexually. If she'd demanded money back or anything along those lines, it seems like he would be able to come up with the money somehow or think of some clever story or profess his love for her and then just run off, anything rather than killing, it would have been much easier..... like if she caught him stealing from her or if he'd borrowed money and she wanted it back. I guess unless she threw a fit and said I'm calling the manager, my dad is his buddy and you're going to be sorry or something and he panicked.
About her following him into his room, I did also wonder if maybe she felt overly safe because she's a regular there and her family know the owners. But then it's also a bit strange she'd go into a room with a guy when so many people there know her family. Maybe she had drug or alcohol problems, it seems a bit unusual for a young woman in Peru to be out by herself gambling all night in casinos, but again, maybe that was only because her parents know the people who have this casino or run it so they don't mind. One thing that still puzzles me a lot is, people know her there, they saw her with this Dutchman, they knew she went with him to his room that morning, ....but according to some of the reports we're hearing, they didn't enter the room and find her body for a couple of days. How did that happen? The family said they knew she was missing right away, they thought she'd been kidnapped, but why did it take a couple of days for anyone to look in his room?

p.s. are we allowed to put youtube links on the thread like I did, and does anyone know how to put the link in a small form, without the big box? Thanks!

During the sting operation Joran admitted to the murder, I assume this could or would fall under new evidence and he could therefore be detained BY ARUBA. It's what I saw/heard. I didn't make it up.

The way I understood it was the FBI could not arrest Joran in Aruba.

I also understood that since Joran admitted to the crime of murder (in the FBI sting) then Aruba could have held him for 180 days but they didn't.

Same same.

I never heard about the 180 days. Did this come out recently?

FWIW, I remember hearing it was 30 days. God only knows where I read or heard it.

Yup Patty I know exactly what you are talking about :).

One day we'll have to start a thread and share our experiences :D downstairs.

I got some loo-loo's I tell ya! Especially giving birth abroad <snort>.

Cultural differences are fascinating. But one thing I have learned is that no matter where someone comes from IMHO they are all individuals and those individuals are very much like the rest of us ~ they have hopes, dreams and always want better for their children. JMHO.

Sorry for the off topic everyone!

Very true. And LOL don't get me started either with stories from when I myself was young and carefree and in Europe. Like everyone else, I was topless on European beaches when I was a teen over there (of course this was back in the dark ages). :) Great feeling of freedom and just being natural and enjoying the beach. Of course you could turn a lot more heads by wearing a bikini top, since no one else did. ;) You're right, nudity is not taboo in Europe (or many parts of the world) like it is in our puritanical country. Also, when I was Stephany's age, I admit, if I'd met a charming young Dutchman, I might have naively gone into his room. At that age a lot of kids wouldn't think anything of it, it's like they all assume they are friends and everyone their age is safe. I don't fault her for being attracted to a young man or wanting to spend time together, if that's what happened. I'm just so sorry she got hurt.

I saw a video of Fuhrman this morning and he said the coffee cups were on the floor with the contents spilled out. I don't remember about the danish though.

JMHO
fran

This is what I heard him say as well.

Which leads one to wonder where the espresso he supposedly sips leisurely by the murder scene came from. This seems like one of the sensationalized headlines or some claim assanine claim from him like the karate chop.

Do we have NG transcripts yet? Bethany Marshall - described JVDS as a parasidic ....?

Never heard this. If this is true it would mean that the assault did take place after the coffee run. I have always leaned towards the coffee run being after the assault.

... and, as some other poster suggested, she was most likely going to cash in her chips. <perk>

Wow let's not use that term.

Well, I think Joran took them off of her, after she was dead, as a sign of disrespect, before he left the room. He knew she was a "somebody" and it was just his little way of putting her in her place. He knew she would eventually be found and it would be all over the news the little rich girl was found without her pants in a low class hostel.

And left her panties and blouse on?
I think she was wearing what she slept in.
If she had been drinking or if she really was given a ruffie or GHB feeling ill and wanting to sleep are very normal reactions.

The blood splatter on her clothing will tell them whether she was wearing them during the assault or not. Assuming the looked at the blood splatter.

I think we really need to visit the history of Peru and understand the changes that have taken place. The prisons are filled with people who fought against the government, like the Shining Path. An x President is in prison for 25 years for murders he was charged for. I believe Perus has been struggling to establish human rights for all its citizens. The conflict still continues in the more remote areas. Peru has alot more important, violent criminals than Vander Sloot.
I think he is just a nuisance and thorn in their side that has brought them more publicity than they care to have. He is just a common murderer as they have terrorists who bomb and kill wandering their country that need to be addressed.

But he killed the daughter of a powerful man. She was referred to as the "queen" of the family per one of her brothers. She's the only female in the family (with 4 brothers and her dad). Even if it would not be her father or brothers who orders a hit or a beatdown on JVDS, I have a really strong feeling that someone from her extended family or family acquaintances would. Especially on how gruesomely Stephany was killed.

In most South American countries, like most Southeast Asian countries and other developing countries, money talks. The powerful and rich can make a whole family disappear. It's sad, but true.

I read JVDS is having steak when he wants it, and cigarettes if he wants it.

I just don't know what to believe about reports we're hearing, we hear so many variations. It seems unlikely that he would be having steak and cigarettes, doesn't it? Why would he and why would that particular information be released?
About his confession, we still haven't seen any video of him confessing, have we? We've only heard reports about what he supposedly said? It seems so odd that he would offer a confession that seems to tie up every little detail for police like that one did. Why would he? But who knows? He does seem to have a problem of just telling stories, so who knows. Or of course he might not have said any of it, or he might have said it but under duress. I guess we don't know yet (or may never know).

Does anyone have the video of him being physically examined with his shirt off? Anyone spot any fingernail scratches? I just got a fleeting glimpse of the video on TV yesterday.

Well he wasn't a "complete stranger" - she'd been sitting around the casino with him for a few hours.

My guess, to get back the money he owed her.

Several reports have said they had been around each other since the 28th. The video we have seen in the casino does not look like a first meeting or introduction to me. moo

grrrrr. I guess it's because he's in a jail at the prosecutor's office. That should all end tomorrow morning
