I know people can become ill if they're not accustomed to any native diet, however, in this case it was reported over the past weekend that Joran was afraid of someone trying to poison him. Big difference, imo! MOO

Agreed. But I can imagine the problem was one of interpretation. With all the languages in play, it wouldn't be hard for "food poisoning" (English for getting sick from bacteria in food) to become "poisoned food" (English for food that has been deliberately tampered with).

Wow, how do most children perform learning all those languages at one time? Ive been under the impression that some people have a good mind for learning languages and some do not (like me:loser:). I can learn on paper but can't think quickly to speak (or remember what I tried to learn yesterday) without great effort. When I went to the language lab at school, I'd put the headphones on to listen to Spanish ~ the speaker would be talking so fast I was unable to distinguish one word from the next.

Are most Dutch children able to learn one or two additional languages fluently? Do they teach the language by only speaking the language or through books?

I was lucky enough to have an elective in latin BEFORE I took my 2 years of required spanish. I was going to mention the different dialects but I assumed someone had already

I came and got on the computer as soon as I heard this on NancyG's show, so thank you for posting it when you did.

Did that Griffith guy just say Joran could be tried in the US for the murder?! That's what it sounded like to me and then someone on the show kind of turned it to extortion charges. Or maybe I did misunderstand.

Yes, there is something in international law called "passive personality".

"The passive personality principle allows states, in limited cases, to claim jurisdiction to try a foreign national for offenses committed abroad that affect its own citizens. This principle has been used by the United States to prosecute terrorists and even to arrest (in 1989–90) the de facto leader of Panama, Manuel Noriega, who was subsequently convicted by an American court of cocaine..."

Creeping out to make my first post...lol

I believe that it has been reported that Joran was concerned about eating the meals and requested what the guards were eating.

It has seperately been reported that many foriegners could become ill eating the native diet.

My take is that there are 2 seperate reasons for his "special meals".

While I agree with you, I also wonder why Aruba would even spend the money to go down to interrogate him when they had so many chances to do so already. Why would they now try to act like they are actually serious about enforcing the law?

Maybe for the same reason Beth put up money to learn where her daughter is - they're all probably thinking that he will give the truth because he's desperate. In Beth's case - he'd lost his father and he needed money and now because he needs to get out of Peru.

As unsanitary as that prison looks I am not sure worrying about someone's cooking is his biggest worry,lol....but I do understand if he "thinks" someone is trying to poison him......wonder if he is getting afraid suddenly, lol

NG: playing snippets of Joran's confession: "I have no idea" "I don't remember", etc.

Caller talking about Joran wanting to reveal Natalee's location, basically saying he's a psychopathic liar.

Ray Guidice: Joran wants to make a sweetheart deal. NG says it will be a cold day in H before that happens. Another guest saying there is no prisoner transfer treaty between Peru & Aruba so he will be serving his sentence there in Peru.

NG back to the coffee video, noticing he comes out of the door with the coffee, then knocks on the door, etc. Jean C. noticing there's only one piece of bread with the two cups, and saying in the confession Joran admits he didn't know why he did that (with the coffee and door).

Well, I think we know exactly why he did that coffee trick. To remove himself from the crime scene for a short time. Daddy taught him well. It did not pan out , however, due to the cameras.

Welcome! :)

You're probably right ~ two separate reasons. Maybe he and Ospina can share while they're watching tv together though. :D

Thanks, Rotterdam. It's hard for Americans to imagine the emphasis other countries place on learning languages. Even some of our best high schools no longer have a foreign language requirement and many of our top universities have reduce the requirement to one year.

I do know the origin of Esperanto, but I had no idea it was still being formally taught.

O/T If you plan to continue your education and are from a country with a language not too common, your study books are often not available in your native language.

Joran is agnostic ...I remember reading that about his profile on Face Book I think.. anyway does that mean he is not praying for one of these ... I bet you he is ...

It is scary though ...apparently you could be arrested for driving a taxi .. I mean the taxi driver picked up a fare , and boom JORAN was his customer and he gets in trouble. I dont know it just seems scary.. wrong place wrong time. Did they ever straighten things out for the Taxi guys?

This seemed unfair to me too. We must not know the whole story. It seems he paid them so maybe they assisted him knowing he had just committed a crime of some sort as determined by the police. :waitasec:

They are exposed to it at a very young age. Through foreign pop songs( they like to sing along) and on TV. Many foreign movies are subtitled not voice dubbed plus they start at a young age in school like 11/12 years.

:)A few days ago I was all pumped up because joran was apparently going to one of the worst prisons to wait 2 yrs for trial. Speculation - he wouldn't last.

Now we hear he's in max security with one other prisoner and they're playing poker and eating the same food as the guards. AND his trial will be in 4-6 months.:banghead:

:) Then of course, Holland said they wouldn't be providing a defense for joran and he was given a public defender.

Now, he's getting a top peruvian attorney being paid for by Peru?:banghead:

Can't this guy just suffer a little for me?:D

Just be patient and remember the videotape evidence, Stephany's body being found in his hotel room, and the three judges (who I'm sure aren't secret Joran groupies) deciding his fate. Then it will be on to general population. :behindbar MOO

Thanks Dion, I think the amphetamines could just be amphetamine salts used to treat ADHD/ ADD. She was a student with an active lifestyle, I am thinking it was Adderall or something similar. (I am a 40 yr old woman that was finally diagnosed several years ago with ADD, recently I stopped taking the meds as they make me irritable!)
As to the GHB leaving the body in 12 hrs, I am not sure about this but I would think that would only happen through metabolism...so if she took the GHB and several hours later she was killed, I would think they would still be able to find traces of the drug. Please if anyone has knowledge in this I would be interested in knowing the phases of the drug postmortem. TIA

I started looking this up thismorning- but didn't have much time.Alot of the post mortem info was in relation to overdoses.
Firstly I'm almost certain it was Rohypnol (or some other benzo or hypnotic), not GHB, since it was in a wrapper. IIRC it was the family who stated that the wrappers were found in her car. (please correct me if I'm wrong)

I didn't get around to researching the post-mortem detection of the drugs, but with Rohypnol the results are highly variable depending on the method of testing.

Then I just found this (not post-mortem):
Acceptable date rape / assault drug test samples

Hair strands are a viable sample for date drug testing. Collect the test sample no sooner than thirty (30) days following the incident event.

Urine is a viable test sample if collected within five (5) days following the incident date.

Blood is a viable test sample if collected within five (5) hours following the incident date.

Then this regarding a single intake of the drug (not post-mortem):
In this study the immuno-chemical methods never gave a positive result. Samyn et al detected Flunitrazepam and 7-aminoflunitrazepam in oral fluid after oral administration of Rohypnol. The detection time (LOD 50/pg/mL for Flunitrazepam , 100/pg/mL for 7-aminoflunitrazepam did not exceed 6 hours.

Conclusion:
The detection time of abused drugs are extremely variable.

Finally...something about post-mortem detection (but now I don't have time to read it myself.:banghead:)

Agnostic does not mean atheist. Just no particular religion. Most people do pray though if in dire circumstances even if atheist. Heck , may be it will help. It certainly can not do any harm.
