Well, here's what I find, umm... interesting?... about Joe Tacopina that tells me just exactly what kind of lawyer he is.

On the home page for his law firm, it's mentioned no less than 3 times that he's 'the hottest young lawyer' according to GQ magazine. WTH?? How does that factor into possessing the qualities of a good lawyer?

http://www.tacopinalaw.com/index.html

Oh, and please, PLEASE read the actual GQ article that he's so proud of. Apparently he's too dense to see that they're not so subtly ridiculing his pretentious arrogance. At least that's they way I read it.

You're so right about that article in GQ.....what a sleaze!! And if he finds that complimentary, then his ego is waayyy bigger than his brain-power. Sounds exactly like the right man for the Joran team...LOL!! :laughbounce:

I agree, Suzihawk!!

But I wonder if your link to the report by Amigoe.com is correct. It states that this was reported by the newspaper Peru21....but I don't see anything to this affect on the Peru21 website. They only have the original report of 'three attorneys', with 2 being foreigners, but nothing about Altez being replaced. :waitasec:

Guess we'll just have to wait and see!! :banghead: :banghead:

Also, I haven't seen any web reports by any of the major US media about Tacopina getting involved!! That's kind of weird. Are they all still in 'holiday weekend' mode??!!??

This case is certainly keeping us on our toes!!

That it is!

I reckon we'll soon see if/when JT makes his usual media rounds. He and JVS are no different so far as the media is concerned. Both LOVE the limelight and seek it out at every opportunity. The only difference is after JVS has been financially drained dry, he'll be cooling his heels in prison where he belongs - just like Melanie McGuire - while JT will be off to buy another pair of expensive Italian loafers from Milan.

I'm certain that this is the correct spelling of Joe's last name Suzihawk (thank you for pointing it out), and I move that we all use this correct spelling in all future posts (big grin).

That was a direct quote from the translated article. But I DO like it! :D

I don't know but I think that is a huge mistake to not have one lawyer that knows peru's laws.
I agree and that's why I'm questioning if it's even possible. Or is this another thing he'll appeal when convicted ~ that he didn't have a Peruvian attorney?? :banghead:

Article from June 4:

"Tacopina said he is not representing van der Sloot and no longer has a good relationship with the family."

http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/06/03/peru.murder.case/index.html

Does anyone know what that was all about??? :waitasec: TIA.

im guessing that he had not received payment for retainer??? i dont think his services come cheaply. but then again there is a lot of press involved, but maybe joe hadnt assessed the entire situation yet??

If Joe Tacopina gets JVS off,I
would hope that Joran buys a house
across the street from JT and lives
there and visits JT and his family. Let's
see how happy JT would be to have this
"NUT" IMHO living near him in the future.:banghead::banghead:

While I don't believe at this point JVS will skate free on SF's death, this scenario is hilarious. Remember this movie: What About Bob?

I found this article from "Topix," Milan, Italy. Article regarding Joe's representation is here: (Also, I believe I read that Joe has an office in Milan, is that correct???) JMHO

JVS is an idiot. He's being thrown into the shark's mouth. JVS and JT both love the media attention and the media loves the attention they get from the both of them. The thing is, after the water settles, both the media and JT will be well fed and JVS will be behind bars--somewhere. JT is just the boat captain throwing the sharks (media) more chum. It will be interesting to see, if at his best, JT can wiggle his way around to get JVS to serve his time elsewhere? I think we are only seeing the beginning of this adventure of feeding the sharks.....one little finger and toe at a time.

Maybe they gave him an offer he can't refuse! ;)

Seriously, I don't know if it's true or not JT is going to represent JVDS in Peru. IF he does, he'll probably do it for the publicity alone, thinking he'll get him off on a technicality.

Prior to the NH case, and before JT represented JVDS previously, JT was a regular fixture on the nightly news. I think that's most likely how the VDS family chose him, his high profile. But after that case died down, he's hardly been on the shows at all. Just maybe two or three times in the past 3 years.
He may have been popular previously, but I don't think the Holloway case did him any favors. Just like Garagos with SP. He was all over the tube prior to his representing SP, but since, not so much.

The problem is these guy's ego gets in the way, they make mistakes, their losses are broadcast and it's down-hill from their. IMHO

Yeah, JT was in CQ what, '07? His star has tarnished.

I know!!!!! I was reading up on him last nite! I think it was on his website and definitely other articles where he claims to have represented Michael Jackson. He didn't. He honed in on an assistant for MJ who Sneddon charged with kidnapping and what not the mother of the victim. The charges were dropped and of course Tacapino claims a big victory. I personally think that Sneddon was just flexing his muscles when he laid the charges anyways.

Other cases where he's got himself into some trouble. He's an opportunist, imo. Same department as Geragos.

Thought I'd look up the Inter-American Court of Human Rights....

From what I've been reading, I doubt this is a case that would even qualify to be heard there.
I think it's just a bunch of show-boating from joran's lawyer.

Interesting to know that this Court is comprised of 7 Judges and the current President is from Peru!

An interesting read....Newsweek, June 4:

snipped

"Why do young murder suspects act like reality-TV stars rather than murder suspects?

During the five years since Holloway’s disappearance ... van der Sloot has reveled in sick infamy as the prime suspect in an unsolved mystery.

He’s not alone. Stories like van der Sloot’s are increasingly common among the current post-teen generation that grew up on reality television and virtual realism. Think of suspected child-killer Casey Anthony and the study-abroad student-murderer Amanda Knox, for instance.

Kids in big trouble share the same sense of life without consequences—and an obvious loss of their moral compass—when it comes to the gravity of the accusations against them. It’s as if they’ve been conditioned to believe that life can simply be reset like a video game if things start to go bad. Or maybe that fame—even infamy—is so intoxicating that they just want more."

Berenson's case was referred to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights of the Organization of American States when the government of Peru refused to accept the Commission’s recommendations.[4]

What has Joran done since this article on June 4 that would change Joe Tacopina's mind.

EXCLUSIVE: Murder Suspect Joran Van der Sloot "Has Gone Down A Very Disturbing Path" Says His Ex-Lawyer

<snip> “At this stage I wouldn’t agree to be his attorney because the Joran of today has gone down a very disturbing path in life,” he said.

“I met and knew Joran four and a half years ago and he was overwhelmed by the media. The kid I knew back then would not have committed an act of violence.

“The only reason I got involved in the case is because we did a two month investigation and believed he had no involvement in the murder or disappearance in Aruba.

“However his behavior over the last two and a half years has made me believe he is not the same person I knew."

I agree that maybe the retainer had not come about yet, but his statement(s) for the newspapers/media are the beginnings of his case preparation. So far, if you notice, everything goes back 4 1/2 - 5 years ago and how JVS was someone who wouldn't do such things and how the media just overwhelmed him, etc. So, my point is, JVS became this type of person due to everything that happend on the NH case and because he has that "bullseye" on his back and was hounded. He says that the NH case doesn't have anything to do with the present situation, but watch and see, he'll use it. JMHO
