Great deep dive into the Idaho4 investigation, laying out the timeline with more specificity than we've previously had, and debunking some things that many of us thought were probably true.

A small police department can't solve a case like this immediately, but they sure as hell can screw it up. Fortunately, they knew they were overmatched right away, and brought in the big guns.

The house was sealed, and not even Chief Fry was allowed inside until investigators arrived, and a search warrant was approved. People who needed to be interviewed were identified, and the roommates, friends, and family members were quickly brought to the station.

What I found surprising was just how quickly the IGG work started. The DNA results came back on the 20th of November, and after a CODIS upload failed to generate a match, the sample was delivered to Othram two days later.

Investigators had Kohberger's name on December, 19, and began surveillance a day later. He was spotted walking around the neighborhood late at night in dark clothing, but was not seen cleaning his car with bleach, nor was he spotted throwing his trash in his neighbor's garbage cans. When police raided the house, Kohberger attempted to make a break for it, trying to get downstairs to his basement bedroom.

They searched damn near everywhere for the knife, and are convinced that Xana did in fact go upstairs and disrupt Kohberger.

“She certainly did go up the stairs,” Gilbertson said. “Fortunately, that’s what stopped him up there and caused him to screw up and leave the knife sheath, was either hearing or seeing Xana. And then that took his attention away, and he followed her down the stairs to her bedroom.”

This is how all future investigations should work. No reason to waste time.

I know I've seen the info in a news source, but I have this reference right in front of me:

From Patterson's book:

So, on November 25, the day after Thanksgiving, the chief approves a message to local law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for this specific car. Four days later, in the early hours of November 29, over in Pullman, Washington, WSU police officer Daniel Tiengo searches for white Elantras registered at the university. He sees that one, a 2015 model, belongs to a student named Bryan Kohberger. A colleague of Tiengo’s, Officer Curtis Whitman, spots the actual vehicle in a Pullman student-housing parking lot. He logs it. But white cars are ubiquitous. So are Hyundai Elantras. So, since this car appears to be a model from the wrong year, the Pullman cops don’t pass this up the food chain to Moscow. They don’t yet know that the FBI vehicle specialist has in fact now conveyed to his agency that it’s possible, given the shape of the fog light and rear reflectors in the available images, that they should extend the date range of the Hyundai Elantra to as late as 2016.
Now that's interesting. I've got to go back to my timeline.

This is what I have:

November 18, 2022, 5 days after the murders, according to WA state licensing, BK registered the 2015 white Elantra with WA.

Nov 22, 2022 Sheath hand delivered to Othram Labs, in Texas.

November 25th
MPD told all LE agencies to look out for all white Hyundai Elantras.

**He goes back to the University. Contues to be a teachers assistant (all of a sudden he is grading papers kinder/nicer).

November 29th
12:28am, yes am, WSU officer Daniel queried white elantras at WSU. Computer? He found a 2015 white elantra w/Penn license plate registered to BK.

12:58am another WSU officer "Curtis" locates his car in a Pullman parking lot. In an apartment complex that houses students. Registered to KB and had Washington tags.

Curtis pulls BK's drivers license to view it. His identity matches DM's physical description.

Nov 29 BK identified as owner of white Elantra by WSU police.

Dec 2, 2022 BK got his hair cut. In the book, hairdresser gives her account.

Dec 7, 2022 Police appeal to announce to public their interest in talking to driver of White Elantra seen in immediate area of crime at time of crime.

Dec 7, 2022 BK had to have a meeting to "discuss improvement plan progress. "

Dec 7, 2022 or after the Ride Share guy (for KG and MM) SPOTTED BK's car. He only lived 1200 ft from BK.

Dec 9, 2022 BK loses his temper and has a second altercation with professor.

Dec 10 Ride Share guy turns in his list of White Elantas to LE.

Dec 10, 2022 FBI gets sheath back from Othram Labs for further testing.

Dec. 15, 2022 Classes ended at WSU.

Dec 16 we learned from the media that police were looking for a Ka-bar.

Dec. 16 Classes end at UI Moscow

Dec 17, 2022 Home in Pennsylvania.

Dec 19, 2022 Close family member of BK causes a genealogy"hit" relative to BK . Got BK's name.

Do you think that footprint could have been Hunter's after he was in XK's room checking for pulses?

They knew he was in the house and would have been able to go back to him once they found it and do a direct comparison with his shoes for pattern and size.

Bravo and Brava @othram.

You absolutely make the world a better place.

That's mildly disappointing.
No, it means that they aren't going to do a darned thing about his discomfort. Good! Erin Patterson also complains about the temperature of her prison, like it's a Ritz-Carlton hotel.

I think the rage he showed towards KG was because MM was his target and she "ruined" his plans for the night.
I think it's possible that he felt rage toward any woman who didn't respect him as a power and authority.

It's time to request a sarcastic boo-hoo emoji from Tricia. Or maybe a tiny violin? Anyone have any pull?

Interesting how "a" white car was seen pulled over in that spot.

BBM
He is certain.
That means to me, it isn't just DM recollections, there must be some kind of forensic evidence going on the stairs.

I had no idea and am a bit surprised how closely they were in touch, BK and his Mother, and wonder with the timing and length of their calls (just he & Mother, not both of “his parents” possibly, as I had understood before) now being revealed….

Whether he was discussing with her some of what he did, even if painting it differently than him being the perp (e.g., “I just witnessed…” “I was out stargazing and…” “I saw on SM there were these horrific murders near me….”, and needed her advice and support to get through that morning, and then took the selfie after cleaning up and modeling a new shirt IIRC she gave him (or gave him $ for?) to show to “Mother” he was okay. Wow…. MOO

“Bryan Kohberger Called His Mother After Idaho Murders — Once When He Got Home and Again While Driving Back to Crime Scene (Exclusive)
  • Heather Barnhart, the digital forensics expert who led the team tasked with examining Bryan Kohberger's phone and hard drive, is speaking to PEOPLE about the case
  • Barnhart says that Kohberger called his mother at 6:17 a.m. on Nov. 13, 2022, less than two hours after murdering four University of Idaho students
  • Her investigation also discovered that Kohberger called his mother again for 54 minutes at 8:03 a.m., which would have been when he returned to the crime scene that morning
…….

He had his parents saved as "Mother" and "Father" in his phone, says Barnhart, and would often call his mother first followed immediately after by his father if he did not get an answer.

"And he would go back and forth texting: 'Father, why did mother not respond? Why is she not answering the phone?" Barnhart says.

…….

The timing of that call means that Kohberger would have been speaking with his mother while in his car driving back to the scene of the crime.

….

The two spoke for two minutes at 4:05 p.m. and at 5:53 p.m. had their final conversation, which lasted 96 minutes.

By the end of that day, Kohberger and his mother had spoken on the phone for well over three hours.”

Doesn’t BKs’ mother work with children who have special needs?
Maybe she was helpful in talking him through his OCD or anger?

I have a son in his twenties, we talk sometimes over an hour and catch up. He is over 1000 miles away. BK does not have a girlfriend, and went out to WA without knowing anyone there.
So this alone and whatever he named them in his phone is not strange.

What did they talk about?
Do I think she knew anything about his plan? No If she had she would have called the cops. She works with children- she is a mandatory reporter.

Did he call in the wee hours when he was casing the house?

I think it's possible that he felt rage toward any woman who didn't respect him as a power and authority.

I think it is possible he no longer saw some women as people at all.
I’m not even sure he thinks of his parents as people.

In my experience there are humans that do not understand that every human is a fully independent and worthy of all of the things they want or need themselves.
All of their interactions are transactional, not relational

Is that a narcissist? I think maybe, but his issues went farther.

He didn’t recognize them as people enough to have empathy
He hated them
He gained pleasure from destroying them

Soul less

And people in hell want ice water, as they say.

He may decide firing squad was the easier way out.
And I’m curious as to how long his parents are going to make themselves available, if he keeps calling them to rant. To them this may be an all too familiar situation- instead of teaching him to handle adversity they may have taught him to pitch a fit until you get your way. He reeks of that kind of kid in a man’s body

IMO this is part of how the puzzle pieces of his character do not fit together.

He admitted long ago, on the Visual Snow board, that he didn’t view his father as a person.

Yet he seems very dependent on his mother in a way that strikes me as quite unusual for a 28-year old man.

I don’t know what that signifies about how he views women overall.

Maybe women are just cardboard cutouts to him, or maybe in his estimation no women can live up to his mother.

Or just part of the derangement, with no sensible explanation forthcoming.

Exactly! Hunter said he went to the kitchen to get a knife in case the murderer was still in the house. (Supp 42 of MPD reports). He could have followed a similar path as the murderer, right past Dylan’s door.

The only problem with this is LE included the partial Vans-like footprint in the probable cause affidavit. Wouldn’t they have already compared this print to Hunter’s shoes and excluded the reference if it matched?

So, combining a reply to @Ghostwheel and @Warwick7 about timing of when WSU identified BK's car vs when Moscow police were told--with a source that is more reliable perhaps than Patterson's book:

From the mouth of Hippler himself:

First, Defendant notes that in Payne Exhibit A, Detective Payne states that on November 29, 2022, officers from Washington State University (WSU) queried white Hyundai Elantras registered at the school and pulled up a 2015 white Elantra with Pennsylvania plates that was registered to Defendant. Exh. D3-B at Bates 5166-67. That same day, Detective Payne states another WSU officer was patrolling the area by Defendant's apartment and located a 2015 white Elantra with Washington plates. He ran the plate and it returned to Defendant. Jd. Defendant points out that Detective Payne was not even aware of the WSU officers' findings in this regard until December 20, 2022, after Defendant was already identified by IGG. However, he contends Payne Exhibit A makes it appear that Defendant was identified, in part, through the WSU queries.

The author must be feeling so horrified that her book and her words were misinterpreted and misused! She never meant get over your fear and anger of murdering someone and go do it!

She died in 2012, so no adverse publicity for her there.

He wasn’t good in the real social world, and seems to have created a fantasy world where he thrived, and
Was trying to blend the two.
Maybe heroine messes up the brain in this way? Maybe he stays with the limbic system in control rather than rational thought?

I think his relationship with his mother is transactional like a dopamine hit, not relational.
If his mom cut him off and he could get nothing from her, I think she may no longer matter to him. A dog doesn’t love every person holding the food- they just want the food.
Any signs of him being upset are then manipulative tactics to get what he wants.

He can feel, but often stays in humiliation, shame, hate, and anger.
Over the years he seems to have gotten better at controlling his temper, rather than flying off the handle. But in dealing with students it became apparent he could not keep that facade up.

I think he was embarrassed of his parents, his dad was a maintenance man and his mom some kind of teacher aid. BK was educated- he thought he was better than his parents.
So who paid his tuition, food bill, rent, utilities while he was in school?

He is 28, not 12.
So what exactly has he ever done for his parents?
Kind, giving, self-sacrifice… none of those words come to mind with regard to him.
Do his parents simply live and exist to meet his every need? I think so

I think they told him they were proud, he was so smart, they bragged on him, and he took it all in and then turned it on them

His fantasy of great fame and admiration has been popped- all he is left with is… Reality.
