New article from Kevin Fixler at the Idaho Statesman today:

Investigators and the state were very angry about the leaks to dateline, and the investigation is both secret, and ongoing.

They say that Dateline had accurate and inaccurate information, with a heavy focus on the latter.

Kohberger did have social media images of college females on his phone, and they were contacted. They were all shocked.

He did also have those searches that Dateline reported on, and an interest in Ted Bundy.

However, Xana's blood was not found on the third floor, her Apple Watch did not show her ascending the stairs, there is no evidence Kohberger sat down, and Ethan's legs were not "carved."

They were cut, but investigators don't believe there was some sort of sadistic intent. It seems their theory is that was done in order to prevent Ethan from coming after him.

I would like to think that is true, but I very highly doubt that it is. Most college-aged kids are just like most of us were when we were that age. They think they are invincible, and if they are even aware of any of the particulars of, or aware of the murders at all, they probably think that it could not happen to them. "Not here, not me". I would think that around UI and WSU, the murders will be long remembered, but I fear in many campuses around the country, they have already been, or soon will be pushed out of memory. I do hope that parents remind their students of these murders, and safety precautions they should always take, before they drop them off to begin a new school year. It may save someone's life someday.

I'd also have loved to have seen the families lead a campaign on this but I can understand why they wouldn't - a minority might respond that publicity around security & prevention is victim blaming.

As for universities, they also should redouble their efforts - particularly when it's a case of accommodation which is technically off-campus & privately rented but in reality operates adjacent to sorority housing - overspill from a few hundred metres away.

As for campus police - When you respond to a noise or alcohol call-out it's not a huge stretch to enquire about effective security: Does this slider work? When did you last change the door code? Ok, here's a leaflet - I'd strongly advise you to contact your landlord & the PPD number for reporting minor concerns ( A prowler in the trees in my back yard)

Also wherever there are campus police and departmental tie-ins - like the WSU Criminology internships with Pullman, then research projects which monitor and evaluate minor prowler & creeper incidents would be worthwhile. (Staff in that Dept already know the correlation between low level offending and progression to more serious crimes even though the 1122 tragedy itself is very, very rare )

Some lessons have to be learned from this.
(These are small steps & uncontroversial suggestions. Am not expecting anybody to seriously consider the rise in SA stats or take a look at increased gender polarisation among young men & the effect of the ' manosphere' or incel-type thinking because I've had to lower my expectations wrt the public good)

Thank goodness they had an acre lot and not a homes stacked on top of each other you see in a lot of subdivisions today. I think that factored into the decision to make the tactical entry that way.

Still nerve racking though.

From the article linked by @MassGuy above from the Statesman, neither the Prosecution, the Defense nor Judge Hippler will be privy to any of the findings. I wonder who is doing the investigation?

I'm finally caught up with the threads after sentencing--ironically I was happy a few months ago that work travel would be done before the trail began, but I ended up missing sentencing and appreciate all the live updates and the snippets from the documents and youtube, etc.

I haven't yet started looking at the document dump, but one interesting thing as I get through the Patterson/Ward book--we talked a lot about that classroom confrontation between BK and the undergrads where the professor told the students to have at him when they complained about his grading. It never sat right with me, and I know others felt the same. I sometimes thought this might have added to the pressures he felt and his actions. But, according to the book, BK is the one who actually requested this confrontation when the department heads were meeting with him. It was not something the professor set up. Just an interesting footnote to a prior discussion.

Also in the same vein, it's worth noting that Grad Assistant 'L' is in the MPD documents and in his witness statement he tells LE that BK had wanted to ' fight' the department's allegations and asked for L's help in that. That conversation isn't dated in the witness statement but it's possible that BK thought he could retain his post & that all wasn't lost at the time he murdered the four kids.

My overall impression of him during his difficulties with WSU - from the Ward book's interviews - was pugnacious

How do you propose that universities control privately owned off-campus housing? It's one thing to blame them when they dropped the ball in on-campus housing, like in the Kristin Smart case, who lived in the dorms and so did the suspect, but this is a whole different horse. I see it as the landlord's responsibility to maintain the integrity of the doors and windows, and short of doing that- the tenants make the repairs and get re-imbursed from the landlords. Yes college students should be made aware of basic safety- maybe that should be the universities job, but that's not always a realistic goal. Oh, and they were students at U of Idaho, not WSU.

I hope like heck they are before they were deceased cuz I doubt pics of the deceased, if taken by LE, would be released to the public. At least I don't think.

So, if before... then he was sneaking pictures of them during his stalkings. I'd be shocked, mortified, actually, if he took pics of his "handywork".

Although the "case is closed" they are still heavily involved in it, no?

That sounds good, but still: Public property within campus bounds- who determines what is "within campus bounds"? How many miles off-campus is considered within campus bounds if it's not adjacent to campus?
